I’m so glad you’re starting sewing. Yes you MUST have the presser foot UP before threading. When the foot is UP the tension discs are open. If the foot is down then the thread can’t make it to the right channels and you can not get proper tension.

If you mean stitch length, 2.5 is a good starting point.

How do you back stich

There is a big button on the right side of the machine. You press it down while you are backstitching. When you stop pressing, it stops backstitching.

Bottom big button, push in gently...do a few stitches,release.
