Get that 'Portrait Mode' look with your Lumix FZ82/FZ80 | Photography at Ryhope Steampunk Event.
You might have recently bought a Lumix fz80/82 or similar camera to get into photography but find you can't quite get that 'portrait filter mode' look to your photos. Frustrating, yes? In this video I'll explain the reason why and how we can work around the issues to create a shallow depth of field and get that blurred background or background bokeh as it is sometimes referred. I'll also put that technique to the test at a local Steampunk event and we'll discuss the results.

I always learn something when I watch your videos Andrew. So far, bokeh on my FZ80 has mostly been lucky shots for me, thank you for showing how to set it up methodically. Also, I LOVE your "no-bokeh" shot at 12:18 The lady's flaming red hair just pulls your eyes on to her, the in-focus middleground and background has completely been upstaged.

Thanks for watching and I'm pleased you got something out of the video. I'd been asked several times if it was possible to get that shallow depth of field with this camera so i thought I'd try and demonstrate it. The lady with the red hair was quite lovely I had a chat with her after she spotted me taking this photo.

Thanks Paul, apparently it was quite low key as steampunk events go but still have me some good photo opportunities and I got to chat with some other photographers. I hope a few fz82 users find it a help with the camera. Thanks for watching.

One of the earliest breakthroughs I had with my photography was figuring out how to manipulate a little point and shoot (a whopping 0.5 megapixels if I remember rightly) camera in this way. Getting objects and moving around with the camera and the distance to the background and seeing the resulting changes was one of those photography Eureka moments for me. A great little tutorial like this would have been a much easier and quicker way to learn the reasoning behind it as it was years before I started to learn the 'why'......thank goodness we have You Tube these days. Excellent explanation Andrew and some fine portraits.

Thanks for watching Dave. I have got to admit I created the video for selfish reasons as I get asked often if it is possible or how did I get a blurred background in my shots with the FZ82. Trying to demonstrate the technique visually is a bit easier than writing it.

Funny isn't, people asking how to get the portrait look from their phones with a camera that traditionally would have been the only way to create the effect. 😄 Well explained Andrew and some great shots - some really interesting subjects there. 🙂

What a fabulous event, those costumes were awesome and they really make an effort. I must see if they have anything like that here in Oz. That was a terrific little tutorial on using the zoom to get sharp portraits that really "pop" with a bridge camera. I recently used the same technique to get a sharp close-up of a cormorat with a blurred background. Glad that you were able to charm your way to getting some wonderful portraits. I particularly like to old gent at 11:52 with his marvellous hat complemented by his equally superb beard.

Thanks for watching Dennis, I've been asked a few times about how to get that shallow depth of field with this camera and when I heard this event was going to be on I thought it would make for a great and interesting photo opportunity. I'm sure there will be events like this in Australia, if not steampunk then certainly Cosplay events - all there folks who dress up love to have their photo taken.

Really good video. I sold my Lumix TZ90 at the end of last year as I wanted a camera that offered more depth of field however a few weeks ago I purchased another. I have a greater respect for travel zooms and bridge cameras as they offer so much in a small package. One other trick is if you get down to the subject at the minimum you get a greater depth of field as well.

Thanks for watching Lim. Travel zooms and bridge cameras have their place, especially when you don't want to be carrying around a lot of gear.

Andrew this was very helpful, as my wife and I just bought a z80 and were instantly disappointed with its seeming inability to control the depth of field. What I really like about your video is specific examples and settings that work and not a lot of fluff and filler in your video. One thing I was wondering, did you use a tripod for most shots? It seems your focal length and shutter speed combo wouldn't work for hand held photographs? The rule generally is shutter speed has to be the inverse of focal length to get a clear hand held photo? Would appreciate your thoughts!

I"ll not say it is easy to get a shallow depth of field with this camera, but using this technique, it is possible. I shot handheld for the entire day. The image stabilisation in this camera is very good, I have shot this camera down to 1/10th of a second before you start to notice camera shake in the images. The focal length stated is equivalent in full frame terms. The camera doesn't have a true 20-1200mm lens, I certainly couldn't hand hold that. Thanks again for watching and taking the time to comment.

Sorry for the late comment on this one Andrew, not sure how I missed it. Great tutorial and explanation and censor size, aperture, depth of field, etc. I, for one, hate the background blur on mobile phones right now and hate the way some people use it in situations where they shouldn't. The average phone user isn't quite ready for bokeh yet 😂Really beautiful portraits at the end and that looks like a pretty amazing event! Love the outfits! Great stuff as always mate! Stay cool over there best you can!

Thanks for watching Paul, portrait mode on phones is a pet hate of mine, especially on some low/mid range phones where the software needs some development to make it look even slightly convincing. It's all part of the fake social media lifestyle these days. I thought I'd create this video as I've had a few folk ask how to get a shallow depth of field with this camera and it seemed a good topic for a vlog. The event was great and I got chatting to a few photographers too.

I think Bokeh is overrated, I honestly think it's become some sort of obsessive competition. I actually prefer a lot of images with less bokeh as it adds context and atmosphere to the subject, and lets face it, if you take a close portrait of a person, that's what people look at. A little bokeh helps the subject stand out for sure, but I don't think strong amounts really add much in most cases. I guess that's why the Fz82 has enough for my needs. Your tips are useful for when a bit more may be needed, thanks as always.
@AndrewWaltonPhotography

With portraits it's more about isolating the subject, you will struggle to get the really OTT Bokeh with the FZ82 because of the small sensor ( it naturally wants to have a wide depth of field, which is also why phones have to rely on AI to create it). This technique works whether you are shooting people, flowers or birds. Thanks for watching.

In iA mode you are relying on the camera to detect what is important in the photo and alter it's settings accordingly, most of the time it will do a good job. Don't forget there are also scene modes (scn setting on the control wheel) They are ideal for beginners and include camera presents for portraits settings, sports modes, landscape, sunset, night time settings and may help you if you get stuck with less than satisfactory images in aI mode but don't want to shoot in any of the PASM modes.

Great video, what settings you use on the photo style? more sharpness or less, noise reduction? they say its good to keep them -1 then edit a bit,i have a small issue when i zoom too much i get a dar spot on top of the picture, tried to clean up the lens but still there, need to crop just a little of the top always.
