Hello, what you're describing sounds like "tutorial hell". A good way to avoid that is to try to only look at tutorials or seek out new information when you're stuck rather than watching all that stuff passively or obsessively which I believe is pretty much the advice you're giving in this video. Really good call out and glad I came across this.

I definitely feel this with D&D content. I end up watching a lot of optimization videos and character builds, and I even make handfuls of characters who are optimized. At the end of the day, though, the characters I enjoy playing most do more than just combat.

One issue I've noticed that applies a bit to what you are talking about is people being roped into hobbies and gaslighting themselves into thinking that's what makes them happy. I've had a friend that was a long time gym goer and he felt miserable, partly because people forced him into thinking that the gym would make him happy. Too many people get sucked into the idea that you NEED to do one thing or another to be happy while never actually trying things before hand on their own to find out what they like. Everybody's different and everybody wants to do/achieve different things in life. I love fitness myself, but I don't think its a must for everybody, some people devote time to art, science, fiction, their work etc. and don't have the time nor energy to indulge into other activities. Of course you shouldn't be a couch potato and not be somewhat active, that kind of limits you in actually doing what you want to do (energy levels, mood, health and so on), but there is an unhealthy obsession people have with forcing others into fitness that is imo very toxic. It basically devolves into shaming others for not having the same hobby and acting as the world revolves around their own interests. Also not to forget, great video!

First of all I really appreciate the detailed and thorough response 😊. 100% on the gym front; there is a line between encouraging people to be active (good) and insisting that we all need to be crushing PBs every week & hitting the gym on every day that ends in “Y” (not so good).
@aarondaviescoaching
@aarondaviescoaching 10 ай бұрын
To continue… I think people can also find the gym less enjoyable because they’ve fallen into the trap of training in a way someone else enjoys. For example; somebody who follows a bodybuilding program but really enjoys circuits and going for a run on the weekend. I think “fitness”is a lot like other hobbies: there are lots of ways to get fitter and stronger get for health purposes and so most of us should just find the most enjoyable way to do so.

I agree - people should be encouraged to be active rather than shamed into it. Also I hope you don’t mind me doing my responses in “chunks”. I keep going back to your original comment to make sure I don’t miss anything

Thank you, I appreciate the advice and I would even say look at your pile of shame. If you got boxes of stuff not even opened up stop wasting time watching and get back to building and painting, if your lists of rides and gear and the next bike has you in your head, stop get out and ride the bike, then go for a trail walk, you don’t need every TTRPG book to play and 30 sets of coloured dice.

Ironic but needs to be said honestly - bouldering content was my window shopping, especially since you can't do it every day, but I noticed that it was sucking the fun out of my actual sessions and ... not sure how to explain this but also satisfying some need to "go hard" as well; like watching people do amazing was enough for me to not try to do amazing (at my level). I had the same issue with calisthenics / yoga where you also can't progress quickly so you end up falling into content of the finished product to at least get a taste of what it is like.
