Ashley is a soil scientist who has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.
At first, her second love, animals, was the career path she chose but while doing her undergrad she realized that her education would take her elsewhere. And with that, four years later she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor’s degree in science and a major in Soil Science.
Some of Ashley’s interests are KZbin, in which she posts informative videos about plants and gardening. The focus of Ashley’s KZbin channel is to bring science to gardening in a way that is informative but also helpful to others learning to garden. She also talks about the importance of having your own garden and the joys of gardening indoors. Ashley continues to study plants in her free time and hopes to expand her KZbin channel as well as her reach to up-and-coming gardeners.

@@GardeningInCanada I have used every kind of garden glove out there, I am sure. But since I got those costco ones they are my only go to's now. They are really comfortable, breathable and keep the crap out of my nails and tomato stains at bay. You get 12 or so pairs in a package and they last forever. So ya, I would guess they would be popular. I only got a costco membership a year ago so I never saw them before that.

Dollarama has some metal stands, roughly 8 inches across, with three legs, I use them under my containers on my wood deck so the deck boards don’t hold onto moisture and rot under the pot/saucer. They have been sturdy and last for years. A few are starting to rust, I plan to throw a quick coat of rustoleum spray paint and they should be good for years to come.

I bought one of Dollarama's misters a few years ago. Very happy with it. This year, I bought seed starter supplies, including red beer cups (now popular for tomatoes), seeding trays and fiber pots. For mini greenhouses I bought aluminum pans that come with raised, clear, plastic lids (sold in sets of three). I pierced the bottoms of the fiber pots in advance.... they sit in the alumium pans, so easy to move about. Cheers! 🇨🇦

I've purchased many gardening supplies from Dollarama over the years and like you have found some are decent and others not so much. I have purchased their quick connect pieces for the hose and find they were just as good if not better than the cheap ones from the hardware stores. I'm on my second season with them however I do bring them indoors over the winter. I needed the multi-nozzle sprayer and was sick of the hardware store ones going to crap every year or two so this season I bought the green one you showed. Not the best quality sprayer nozzle but for $4 it will certainly do the job until I can find a sale on a good one. BONUS TIP: Not gardening related but the wooden angled spatula from Dollarama is FANTASTIC!! I bought one for myself several years ago and liked it so much I bought a bunch to give to friends and family at X-mas. Everybody told me how useful they found it. It's got the correct angles to get into most pots and pans and won't scratch anything or melt. For $2-$3 it's definitely a useful utensil. 😎

One thing Dollarama has; Grow bags! I picked up one last year and was very pleased. Will be getting some more this year. It was a lot bigger than I thought for 4 bucks. They have tiny ones as well, and a wide, low "Garden Bed" style one that I might try for peas. Otherwise, I usually find their window box/pot selection pretty good. And they have terracotta pots for really cheap. The 6" ones make excellent ollas and are like 2.50 a piece. Oh, and I did pick up some of those "2 Pack Plastic Seeder Trays with cover". Would I plant in them? No. Would I use them for bottom watering and a humidity dome on top of other pots I have? Yes.

Im not in Canada, but its interesting to see whats in dollar stores there. I do use a few things from the Dollar Tree, and dollar store stuff is similar to matter the location or name. The hose end sprayers are great for me, we have hard water from the city and no sprayer lasts more than a year, dollar store ones last the uear and then I toss them. Pruners dont last more than a year, but I lose them or leave them out to get rusty so dollar store ones are perfect. Dont ever ever buy dollar store potting mix, its topsoil with styrofoam to look like perlite, it turns into concrete. But by me the bets thing is the 4 for$1 seed packs! its all heirloom and if you need 25 or so seeds they are perfect.

Thank you for always giving us your real life experience! I appreciate it. You mentioned once, can't remember which video, that someone told you to use warm water to water seedlings. I cannot say with scientific certainty, but I do think this has made my seedlings this year much happier! I use warm water for bottom watering, spritzing, and top watering (YES I do the unspeakable top watering!!:)). We have hard water here so it's always a bit of a challenge for my indoor starts, but this year I think the warm water and keeping them just damp most of the time has been a major improvement. Their plastic cloches are great. They have these metal tomato stakes that are kind of corkscrew shaped: amazing value. This spring I bought some silicone jumbo ice cube trays, cut holes in the bottoms, and they seem like they will make excellent seed starting trays that will last years and years. Cheap zipper-top baggies for seed starting. I buy these bamboo skewer things that have a little flat part, and I use them as plant labels... Way cheaper than other things except maybe popcicle sticks. I love their dish pans for holding and transporting my solo cup starts, although even better is the Costco commercial one from Costco Business Centre.

WIRE BASKET / STRAINER - KITCHEN WARES I bought a rectangular-shaped stainless (supposedly) mesh (wire) basket / strainer that's around 2 inches deep X 16 inches long X 10 inches wide at Dollarama. I use it to wash of veggies with a hose. two pieces of string or wire can be tied to them for handles. It might have been $4.00, but I'm not too sure...it was a couple of years ago. I have also used it to wash and strain crushed rock. Also...galvanized wire. It is around 14 - 16 gage wire that is quite tough. It can be used for many things around the garden. You can even make your own landscape staples, though they are not as tough as the real ones...but close. Thanks for the info Ashley.

Love this video! My faves from the dollar store ... love the gloves, never an issue. Bamboo sticks don't work for me and rot easy. Best tomato tie ups are those green rubber twist tie thingies. Yup, the green clips are total garbage. I use the fancy metal trellises in my garden for determinate tomatoes and the little short trellises (about a foot high) to make a tunnel structure over my strawberries to keep the birds out. I clip the netting over top and use those u shaped stakes to hold the cloth down. We have chickens and the buggers like to dig in one particular bed so I use that weird little bamboo/twig fencing (about 6" high) and lie it flat all over that bed, overturned pots, stick all kinds of decor, chunks of wood lol ... total whacko garden but I make sure most of the area between my plants is covered with an object. I found my sturdy trays at Home Hardware for $5.99 last year. I use the dollar store ones for bottom watering only. Red solo cups for me. I wash them up and so easy for labelling. I save the little sturdy, stackable pots from past purchases too. For the majority of my tomatoes, it was worth investing in strong tomato cages and good wooden stakes. Be sure to check your local feed store for garden options. Prices tend to vary but you just might find some good prices.

Thanks for your recs, Ashley. The third item you mentioned are landscape staples, I believe. Also, you're absolutely right about the tomato clips. They're junk. About the seeds, keep in mind that there can be shockingly few seeds in a package. I once bought a pack of carrot seeds and there were only seven seeds in the envelope. At 25 cents per pack, they're a cheap gamble, but still a gamble. And, by Dollarama, do you mean Dollar Tree, too? I haven't seen a mister at my DT, but I'm on the hunt now. Thanks again. ~ Lisa

The rubber ties are great for Dahlias, tomatoes and the large specialty Chrysanthemums I grow. Also the plastic covered metal stakes and/or T bars that I also use for support, on the same plants. Those too are good. The 3" and 4" sq pots are pretty good. However I think it is also luck and/or the year you buy them in. I have some that are softer and more flexible, and thus do not crack easily. However I have 12 well seed starter trays, that usually last only 1 - 2 seasons. During COVID they were a life saver, when everything was closed.

I use many of their white wire fences, they come in a three pack. In the off season they're lying flat on my beds to hold the mulch in place for the winter, at the same time discouraging cats from digging. Once the plants are growing well I use them to border the garden, probably what they're intended for. I also use extra ones to hold plants up and off the paths. They're a royal pain to store, and can get hopelessly tangled. But mine are usually in use through the winter, any I store are placed curvy side down in a box.

Ooh! Thanks for this! I share your experiences with the ground staples and those green clips. The ground staples are so very handy! The clips... I did manage to have some last a couple of seasons, but not well. I don't know if it's the same frost cover you mentioned, but I bought a couple to try out and they tore incredibly easily. I could barely get it over my garden bed without tearing it one of them. The second one tore up so badly, I ended up tying the strips on sticks to wave in the wind and hopefully startle deer away. I have been getting the pinwheels for that, too. I attach them to posts all over the place, and they seem to be helping. They don't last, of course, but I don't think that's specific to dollar store ones! I like their bamboo stakes, too, but not as much as their plastic coated metal stakes. Previously, I'd bought some at Canadian Tire to try. They were hollow tubes coated in plastic. Our soil is incredibly rocky and they broke, just trying to push them into the soil. I ended up keeping the pieces for other uses. The Dollarama ones are solid metal in various sizes and priced so much better than elsewhere. They are very strong, and I was even able to lash together some of the larger sized ones to make trellises for gourds and melons. These will last many years. Thanks for mentioning about the hand tools. I've been eyeballing those, but hesitant! I also like their spools of twist tie wire with a built in cutter. The ones you cut to whatever length you need. I've bought them at Canadian Tire, too, and quality wise, I found no difference at all. I've even gotten a couple of seasons out of some of the cut pieces Thanks, also, for mentioning the plastic drop cloth! That type of plastic is something I need to pick up more of this year. I bought a few of their "instant raised beds", made of a black felted cloth. Aside from one having a split seam when we unpackaged it that my daughter just sewed up for me, they are surprisingly good. "Raised bed" is a generous description. They're quite small and shallow, so what can be planted in them is limited, but the ones we got have already lasted two seasons and easily are good for a third. I also found some green fabric grow bags that I used last year, and they are definitely good for another season or more. Compare that to some I bought at Canadian Tire the year before, that started falling apart before the growing season was done. No wonder they were on clearance! 😄😄

Also love the Costco garden gloves! Excellent quality and you get a lot so I stash them everywhere. Everyone in my house uses them but my husband who has baseball mitts for hands. The Dollarama 3.6” and 3” square pots are great for giving away your extra transplants. Only good for one season but fine in a pinch.

Last year I got hexagonal plastic pots that came in tiny, small and medium sizes. I used them for starting seeds and up potting, they worked great, and were sturdier than the black ones which I've also used. For trays to use under them I went to the housewares section and got some serving trays that have handles. I think it's hit and miss sometimes with their stuff, you can buy an item one time and its great but then next time its total crap.

The rubberized wire tie stuff they have is great. I think there's 15 ft on a flat plastic card thing. Love the stuff. It's holding up all my raspberry canes right now and it'll be holding up my tomatoes this year. I already bought 3 cards worth because they were sold out by the end of June last year. Totally worth it. I think it's $1.75. You should use proper wire cutters to cut it though. It's pretty hard on scissors.

The trays work, you just need a tote lid to move everything. Given the price of trays are really high here it's worth it the extra effort. The green clips o haven't had the same experience. I loose about a quarter of them a season but it's often cause I leave them in the garden over the winter. Most of the black pots are great, better than others I buy. They smell funny though. The knee pad is worth it. And for gloves I actually use disposable nytol gloves when I use gloves. I buy by the box (not dollsr store) as I also use on the kitchen.

For the price, I don't mind losing one or two clips per season. I have a big bucket of probably 100 clips. If one clip isn't secure enough, I use two or five. Unused clips hang in a row on a cage, and I grab them as needed. I love those clips. When one breaks, I laugh, thank it for its service, and make a mental note to replenish my losses with another $3 packet in five years.

The tomato clips are cheaply made but they are quick to use. You have a good sense of humor and we gardeners need that. You should do a video on dumpster diving to get free stuff to use in the garden. I do winter sowing and I try to collect jugs before the recycling truck comes. Most times they do my area before daylight so I am foiled in my quest. When they are late I go on my Holy Grail quest. I find other treasures and people driving to work probably think I am a nut case carry odds and ends. I have no shame.

I've bought that white row cover stuff from Dollarama several years. It does not last long in our Canadian elements. It works great in the short term. But if you take it off & leave it outside, even where the sun doesn't reach it (but it was still outside) it just rips apart by the end of the summer ~ when you try to use it as frost protection in fall. So.. be aware .. they are a 1 season, or use project. I bought a white row cover many, like 25/30 years ago, from a seed company (I think, I can't remember where). It did last for several years. But I think it was more costly than this Dollarama product. The cover works ~ it just doesn't last.
