Another point to make is in the first few days of a disaster it isnt a bad idea to go to the shop to get a couple more things if its safe enough. You dont want to start on your reserves right away, you dont know how long you'll need to last.

Just cracked open my first can of Albacore Tuna that I bought in 2019. Great taste and texture with no sign of degradation (I find about years 7-9 yrs old they have lost some taste and texture, but that is a great storage item. Note: Always look for signs your can has been compromised... bulging or open cans go right into the trash. Smell check also)

Learn to cook and be flexible and food shortages are easier as you can adapt your meals to whatever is available. During lockdowns I’d hear lots of irate customers complaining about the empty meat shelves but I wasn’t phased. My cart was happily full of dried lentils, seeds, quinoa, pickled herring, tofu, frozen faux meats, etc. Lots of options if you expand your palate.

Gotta love the TP Intro! One positive item that the pandemic gave us preppers was this: folks who 'poo-poo' (pun intended) prepping, I usually have only one word for them--TOILET PAPER. That'll shut 'em up for a while! Good vid. I do have a couple of thoughts on canned foods and 'best by' dates. Yes, the BB dates are pretty much arbitrary. That's why you see so many cans with December 20xx on them as the canners just picked the end of the year in which they were canning. Purely arbitrary, best practices type stuff. However, anything with milk in it such as baby formulae, gravy, some soups such as chowder, that's probably an expiration date. In the US, baby formulae is required to have an expiration date. Now, this isn't true for powdered milk, which will outlast any of us if kept dry. Powdered milk and honey will be good in the year 2525. Water is a big concern. Those 10 to12 oz bottles that come in a 24-pak that most folks buy are packaged in purposefully manufactured biodegradable containers. In short, they will desiccate via osmosis within a year or so. Found this out the hard way. Short term they are great, but not for long-term storage. Yes, I lost cases and cases of water when I found that my 11-oz bottles had only 6-oz in them. Here in the Chihuahuan Desert, they go even faster. Just sayin'... Good vid.

I have a solution for toilet paper. Get cheap wash clothes (about 4or5 dozen). A 5 gal bucket fill to about half with water. Put a squirt of dawn dish soap in it. Keep this next to the toilet. Now wipe your back side and toss the cloth into the bucket. Once a week (at least) drain off the water and put all those clothes in the washer/ hot wash cold rinse. No need for toilet paper. Yes it’s a bit of work but worth it. For those old enough to remember cloth diapers for your babies, you know how this works😄. Actually those who gave babies now consider switching from (pampers) to cloth diapers. Save lots of money and reduce trash going to land fills. Kleenex is great but push come to shove, using handkerchief is cheaper, wash and dry. Use cloth towels in stead of paper towels, again save money!!!!!

I keep a bag of linen fabric strips as TP backup of last resort. They need to be washed or thrown away not flushed after use. Note that linen is made from flax (=linseed). My generator is tri fuel. I always have 5 chords of wood on hand and split and a wood burning stove as a backup in my home (Minnesota). Next to my wood shed I have a 55 gallon barrel drum evaporator stove that I can boil huge amounts of water, use to cook etc. Its primary use is maple syrup. I have tons of taps on hand and buckets to collect sap on my property. I produce 7 gallons a year in a small operation. Extra carbs for everything. I store the carboys that I collect the sap with using a bleach and water ratio thats safe to drink. I also keep 3 beehives. Honey keeps forever and is huge for trading. Water filtration is also in place. Also food stores.

My family and I are as ready as possible. We have all the items you mentioned plus more. You made two major points IMO. First you said don’t go into debt. This is so important in today’s world. I tell my nephews to by SOMETHING each paycheck. We started in 2008 and can last awhile. Second point is the “sell by” or “expiration dates”. Canned food can last much longer than what is listed. You can look up a chart that list how many months or years products will last after these dates. They use it for food for the homeless and food banks. Great video thanks

As a former employee of Walmart. I can confirm that they do not store a lot of food in the back. 2-3 trucks come late at night. We take inventory of it. Then take it right out. During the pandemic, I already had my toilet paper. I was in the outhouse business for many many years, and I had a thing with never running out of toilet paper, and I brought a bunch with me when I left California. And since 1992, I have kept my toilet paper stock up. So I wasn’t panicking. I said I would share my food, but I will not share my toilet paper and that was for real.

I THOUGHT I was set at that time, but, discovered that what I thought were packages of the jumbo rolls of T.P., were actually paper towels (they were only visible end-on). Luckily, my then neighbor, a grocery store assistant manager, had warned me that they were having trouble getting the TP in (we spoke nearly every day about the various shortages that I had read of in my research, so he would order-up early on those items). I told EVERYONE I could to stock up, only to find that MY OWN stock... WASN'T, and I had no money at that point to pay the exhorbitant prices on the few rolls another store had. My neighbor literally bought and GAVE me the last 8-roll package in the store - bless him! So, ya, keeping abreast of what you have and organizing it is SO important... 😕. Cheers!

Honestly get several cloths and plenty of soap to clean yourself with rather than toilet paper. You have to dispose of toilet paper or burn it. Cloths require water to clean with and not your drinking water. I already have scoped out the local water I will use. What you need is a way to sanitize water for when the tap runs out. By all means have lots of bottled water on hand but better is to have containers that are safely reusable (GLASS or METAL copper is best). Ways to filter water, then boil the water. CLOTH like pillow cases will remove larger items and dirt from the water. Them smaller pores to remove more from the water then boil it. If you can get barrels to catch rain water good idea but you still have to clean and sanitize it, what was on the roof when the water ran off of it?
@durgan5668

Always good to you. Glad you are on the mend. I get a kick out of your jokes, some obvious some ever so subtle. Good reminder to make sure we check our inventory and top off if needed. As a long term prepper, I sometimes get lax on what I have, or forget what I have, or *gasp* don't rotate like I should. Cans of sardine are perfectly good 8+ years after "best buy date"😆. Ramen noodles, not so much. 🤮 To others: doesnt matter what you are prepping for. It isn't always teotwawki. So yeh, clearly we can make due without TP. Obviously,, come on. But comforts are what they are. If I cant get to the store for a month (job loss, car breakdown, weather event, big expense, illness, laziness, supply chain issue, etc--temp stuff) then I dont want my go to plan to be crapping in a rainstorm and wipe my bum with a scooped up puddle of water. If teotwawki was the scenario, then I will defer TP for legit life sustaining supplies. But right now as a prepper with skills and supplies, I dont have to choose, my choice is to have it all. I dont have to do without at this point in time. Because I plan.

Rotation of can goods and other items works when beginning to stock up but when you have a years worth of food built up it needs be stored organized proper in a cool, DRY, dark places. I keep most everything in 5 gallon buckets even can goods with dry packets. Keep an invetory from the start, mark dates on the top of cans for quick viewing. Watch for sales, bogo's. Don't over do it on the frozen food because in SHTF electricity will be the first to go. Don't forget water and multiple methods of heating/cooking food. Multiple ways to make light a fire. I pick up most of my food safe buckets for free or next to nothing from ( dairy/yogurt processing) companies, industrial parks looking to get rid of them. 45 gal metal snap lock drums easily convert into faraday EMP shields and underground caches. Drugs and over the counter meds are a must. Paper copies of important documents books of knowledge because your phone will become a paper weight in a matter hours. All items should be stored in several locations in the event one get raided, which bring me to protection and multiple means.

COLD WEATHER CLIMATES It's relatively simple to prioritize what would be needed, in times of crisis. You simply need to look at what is required to survive, in any given situation, based on the climate where you live. Having breathable air goes without saying, but water is second to air with regards to immediate survival. Now what if you live in cold weather climates, where the temperature reaches well below freezing? You would need to keep your water supplies warm, including any canned goods (wet food). In addition, you would not be able to use your homes water supply, including toilets, in the case of a say a power outage. Heat and the ability to insulate yourself from the cold now becomes a necessity, just like ensuring you have enough water. People living in cold weather climates need to take this into consideration, when preparing for times of crisis. Stockpiling cans of fuel can become monumental, if you were to store enough needed to stay warm. Contingency plans to stay warm and insulated, without the use of modern facilities and utilities, should be a top priority when preparing survival plans. Thanks for sharing this.

Do not use mullein leaves for tp. They're fuzzy and can be irritating. Also, figure out what you will do with your garbage. You don't want to be inundated with rodents, ants, or other pests. Be safe.

Water and food...and toilet paper. It is highly important, along with paper towels. I have always been ready, and I am far MORE ready now. Two months ago I woke up to find that there was no water due to a water main break. All the water was off the shelves at the stores for miles, although the affected area was small. We were ready. People could not cook or get clean. We had supplies and we knew what to do to live pretty normally for a few days. If it were longer, we'd have to jump up to our contingency measures.

Not fond of paper napkins or towels. that's what cloth is for. Put that cost toward something else. Cloth lasts a very long time, and yer doing laundry anyway, just toss 'em in with everything else. When Texas froze, people were panicking about water, and they lived 4 miles from a river. No one knew how to treat water, it was just...eye opening. Sad, but, not surprising.

You can only drink the toilet paper after you urinate on it, 😂 just kidding. Buy bags of seeds for eating sprouts, beans and peas are great to have in hand. Cruciferous seeds like broccoli and cauliflower really can stink if you aren’t super careful washing and straining them a few times a day. I would also stock up on 20-20-20 fertilizer, especially for tomatoes. Fertilize your mature fruit trees with composted horse and rabbit manure. Grab all those Fall leaves off your streets and put into your compost. Consider your composted soil as a sort of brown/green bank account for growing your garden. Any extra, add to your landscaping. Later on you can pull it into expanding your garden.

As an alternative to toilet paper, you might want to consider installing a manually operated bidet attachment that that fits under your toilet seat. And then practice how to operate it, so you won't be caught with your pants down at the last minute.

One of those smaller paint/ insecticide/ cleaner pump-spray bottles with hose & nozzle would also work. Pump the handle to get the pressure up, adjust the fine-ness of spray, and, presto, instant bidet/ shower. It's on my list, and can be used for watering/ misting garden plants, too (assuming no noxious chemicals were previously used). Cheers!

Use vinegar.. Or bleach, as long as you're not mixing any ammonia products in there at the same time (chlorine gas is a bad thing). Bleach, however is starts to fall from 'full strength' after about 6 months. But one should have it around for emergency water treatment, anyway.

yes on the food/water/t.p but what i find that goes real fast (think our hurricane hits) the first thing that runs out (yes food/water/t.p) but "batteries" people always forget batteries. it's dark people say to themselves...selves, it's dark and i can't see, so off to the store for batteries...now guess what the out come is. so with the 3 bases #4 light. yes fuel/cooking/ammo/salnatation/meds,first aid all importent (prepping is not a one item quest) but light is to me #4. can't see to fix wounds/cook/hook up fuel, or refuel. you can sleep untill light (sun) but you may need light way before the sun comes up. oh but i can't live without my meds. or not eat (cooking) let the blood pour out of me, those are very importent. but light need i say more...even a light stick is better then nothing. okay i'll stop. prep well me hardys and keep a head on your shoulders.

I have a water dispenser, so I have 6 5gal jugs, that way it's always, regularly, being changed out with fresh. I clean them each time a d sanitize them with bleach every 3-4th time, then rinse with a white vinegar and water solution to kick any bleach flavor or smell out of it.

Toilet paper isn't needed if you have a renewable source of water and power, I haven't wiped my a$$ in over a month lol, I'm using a hand held bidet that works with rain water and solar. Bottled water is also not needed, I only buy Bottled water during hurricane season and it's mostly to turn it to ice and give away. Canned food is spot on to have, way better than freeze dried food because it doesn't need to be hydrated. Having meat frozen is OK for grid up, for grid down its better having animals, chickens produce eggs for protein, only kill old birds for meat if not producing eggs, chickens can reproduce if you have a rooster.

You forgot oils and ingredients for soups and dressings, maybe its just because i dont use finished canned stuff, its unhealthy and i do not want to rotate it. I have a lot of nuts and a lot of canned fish , thats all i eat regular and can rotate easily. And of course canned and freeze dried vegys. So all i need for salads and soups, where i can still include anything i still get or find in nature.
