You can also go the strategy of, "spread your fire so thinly that nothing ever gets finished and left in varying states of primer and base coats". I'm a fan. I think.

I'm a little of both. I try to keep one project on my paint table till it's done but that often leads to hobby fatigue. Projects stall and it takes me a bit to get motivated to go paint. Sometimes I'll put away a partial paint mini in favor of something I'm more motivated at the time to paint. Other times I'll soldier on. I don't play anything yet but I keep painting with the dreams of playing games with paint models on painted terrain. Every project done puts me one step closer to that goal of playing more games.

As someone with gaming ADHD, it takes real effort to focus on one project and get it done, even one part of one project. But the feeling when it actually gets done is amazing.

As they regularly remind on Play On Tabletop, "don't split fire". Two half dead enemies shooting at you is worse than one enemy shooting at you. Girlfriend got me to focus on one hobby at a time so I'm not scattered across painting and other hobbies/projects. Painted all my 40k character minis, then did another hobby (writing), finished that then went onto another (gaming), finished that and went back to painting. It's a great rotation that also helps to avoid burnout.

I usually jump around a lot with smaller periods of hyper focused project work. The focus usually comes when working towards a specific game that I know I'm going to be playing soon. Right now it's actually Deth Wizards :P But 90% of my hobby time is just me enjoying the process and that means picking up whatever I feel most inspired by at the moment :)

I found my happy spot. I get enough models assembled and painted for 2 players then getting to see my painted minis in action with my friends and they're having fun playing the game creates motivation for me to get more minis finished. Hardest part is starting a new game like I'm doing right now. Working on getting a couple combat patrols painted.

I've been playing for a long time, have a lot of projects in varying stages of being done, most of them are playable for skirmish game, mostly fielding both sides painted and providing the terrain. I'm a hopper, doing a batch or three for one game system and then a smattering of old half done minis just to see them done, and then a batch for some other game or historical period. Overall, my last few years have leaned heavily towards finally painting a lot of that assorted lead I collected in my youth. Today, I'm 3D printing a Mordheim/Frostgrave building, basing some old Ertl Cowtown horses & cows and doing a bit of work on Ertl buildings for a western game I'm running next week at a con, and varnished one batch of a dozen old metal Space Orks and Gretchin finally getting to the painting table and started the next dozen, with another dozen primed and waiting in the wings, with Xenos Rampant as the target game.

I have multiple hobbies that I do jump back and forth on which leads me to not being able to complete many projects. Makes it feel like less of a chore sometimes but it sure leads to projects piling up that do not get completed. Sometimes I’m not enjoying a hobby because I’m trying to do too many different ones in a single day instead of just focusing on one in a day. It’s something I’m working on but I’m glad to have many hobbies and never be bored

My motivation for each of my hobbies comes in chunks. I dive deep into miniature painting for three months, then focus on video games for three months, then catch up on TV/Movies for a couple weeks, and start the process again. I usually start and finish a big project with mini painting, and I get one or two RPGs finished when I focus on games. I wish I could just pick one but my brain doesn’t work that way.

I also use a mind trick of telling myself that I'll just sit down and paint one part of the models on the whole unit or a single color or stage of larger models. Usually just getting started gives me the focus to continue painting and get more accomplished during that session. It's also important to take breaks every so often. My dog will remind me that it's time to go for a walk and my cats are naturally curious about what I'm doing and will interrupt me or sit in my lap while I paint. This helps to remind me to get up and stretch, get something to drink, etc. Even a 5 minute walk with my dog outside can refresh me enough to keep going at the painting for a longer total session. Painting for me is a form of therapy, though. It's much less costly than paying for a therapist.

Hmmm. In a strategy I use, two projects are always up and two miniatures prepped. If one bores, or in this case, a very large model of Timat that required extensive sanding and a lot of Green Stuff putty, the model had to be put to the side and dry. Therefore I had a smaller 75mm miniature to work on in the mean time so the Elven Rouge got her attention while the 5 headed dragon cooked until it was time to further it. Getting both done around the same time gave it that extra endorphin boost. No lag and when one was getting tedious, the other provided a break. While I don’t suggest doing this often, as it can leave to burnout, it’s nice to have two progressing projects to finish up in order to reduce the pile of grey waiting in the line.

I've found the greatest incentive for me to finish a painting project is to schedule a game that you will use the models for. It keeps me on target....mostly. I'm a huge advocate of the focus fire type approach to gaming and try to pit the same focus on painting....I have middling success in each area....lol

I go by a mass batch method and weaponize my hyper-focus, which I recognize is not for everyone. The method is to build the entire army, then prime everything, then base coat everything... and so on until the entire project is done in about 6 months. This results in a completed army and a new project every few months.

This was a helpful video. Thank you. It's rather topical for me as well since I'm building my first army too. I started building in December and am now actually seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I have 30 more infantry to do then I'll be hoping into games finally. The problem I've been running into is that to get my army the way I want it to look is taking a lot of customizing. I've learned a lot about how to use green stuff and Tamiya gap filler over the past 6+ months. I've also learned that being picky about how my army looks increases the build time exponentially.

I usually choose up to 20 small projects (the biggest is a 10 man squad). Then I role a D20. Then out of those I choose the first 10 that rolled and role a d10 for the next 6, and for the next 4 and then choose between 2 and do a out of 3 roll. If anywhere, i feel bad about eliminating any of those projects and would trade it for one of the ones that got chosen, i trade them. If on the last role, the mini that won is the mini that I didnt want to paint, I choose the other one. It takes out the burden of having to choose what to work on stuff AND while Im rolling im obviously rooting for some of them and get excited to work on them. By the end I know exactly which mini I want to paint, im excited about it because it has been now 10min that Im looking at it and imagining it compared to the others and I know how to paint it more or less. Been doing this for a year now. Also, comission painting helps the burnout aswell because when Im not feeling like painting anything, I can still get experience and post-painting enjoyment after painting a squad. I take small comissions up to 20ich models each time with a client I have for almost two years. Also, switching up between hobby adjacent things (or not) give me "saudades" of the other things. I get tired of painting? I can build some more squads, I can kitbash, I can do that conversion that takes 10h and Im afraid of doing. Im tired of building? I can paint, I can learn how to play games, I can try that new technique. Tired of the hobby? I can play video games, skatevoard, play piano, draw, listen to music. Your hobby should not make you less interested in it and it should (imo) make you wantnto do it when you arent. If youre doing it just for the sake of it, stop, give it a minute and llet your self miss it

Looking at what i painted past week, i guess i am a hopper. Than again most is for existing armies/warbands. To give a bit more insight. I've painted 2 Panzer IVs for bolt action (or any other ww2 game still waiting on the v for Victory preorder), the valkyrie for my shieldmaidens mercenaries for in saga and currently 12 sailors for blood and plunder/port royal skirmish game. But I usually switch to what I feel like. Unless there is a tournament upcoming in which case I'll just focus on that warband/army. But unless I am practicing my exact warband composition I will only field painted warbanda

I usually go hard on whatever project I want to get to the table. I try not to jump around unless I'm really not enjoying what I'm working on. If that's the case I will pepper in something I find fun in between projects. Say I'm painting like a unit of 20 guys. I might paint a fun monster after I finish before i get back to that army. Right now I'm trying to finish a ton of Bolt Action before I start either Bot Wars, Fallout or Blood and Plunder. It is killing me to stay in task with all those other new games looming. Great vid!

I’m focusing my hobby fire on Ultramarines. I found a leviathan box set at a near by store, and adding that to some battle older models I had in the garage, found myself with 1250 points of un-painted marines out of 1745 points I have. So working on them this month so I can buy two boxes of aggressors in August. I’ll have a 2000 point force, so I can play at my local store, and can then look back on my Tyranids and get them up to 2000 so I can play a crusade with my son. Thanks for the video

Great video! Life comes at you fast. It is easy enough to get distracted and jump from one hobby to another without ever finishing a project. BUT add life and responsibility into the mix and it can be very tough. It is hard for me to get my brain focus, energy level and free-time to synch up so that I can paint models to completion. AND it takes me so long that by the time I do get a warband completed , the next version of the game is out with new models or friends have moved on to another, brand new super-cool game that just came out. So I suggest playing smaller skirmish warband games where you can paint one model at a time and slowly build up a force while playing at the same time. Also - I recently dug out my 25 year-old, all-metal, Khorne Bloodletter army and I am currently painting them! My kids ask me why I would want to play with such heavy models. LOL!

I should get better at having a squad handy and sitting down to paint for 1 hour a night and making that kind of progress. Instead I find myself more of a marathon painter. I have over 140 models for my 40k Black Templars and after priming black, painting the textured bases, I've spent subsequent weekends painting white shoulder pads and yesterday, red gun casings/weapons. Saturday will be brown leather belts and pouches... But to move to a more batch oriented method, this is where smaller projects like Combat Patrols come in. It's a more bite size way of committing to a force to completion. (and avoid expanding every combat patrol to 2000 points...)

I find this often gets me. Either too many projects in progress. Or taking on batches that are too big. Lots of things move forwards slowly, but you don't get the reward of finishing anything. I started using a Trello board to focus my efforts and set priorities. Not allowing myself more than 1-3 in progress items, and making myself pause projects when I want to pick something else up instead.

For myself I agree with you. Being new to the hobby, I didn’t think it was a big issue. Then, after playing a few games with grey against painted armies, I felt, not by pressure from others or to feeling judge more because of immersion. But my painting skills……are like…between crayons and potatoes. So having a hard time to set myself to paint minis I love and to play by wrecking them. So I got 2 boxes…one to potato paint and the other in reserve to when I’m a better painter….then….I didn’t want to potato paint them.

Im in the same frame of mind. I dont wanna play if my models aren't done. Now i dont love painting but I love the outcome and wins during painting. Plus i wanna display them and feel good everytime i see em which i do. Its a standard. If you drop your standard in playing with grey, you run the risk of dropping your painting standard too (if you are paint driven). If you are highly play driven then painting typically will be lower on the agenda. Theres no wrong or right here. This is a discussion on what motivates you innthe hobby, what outcomes do you want.

So each month I work on additional game tokens, scenario specific figures and miniatures that expand my growing 15th century army

I haven't done any actual miniatures based gaming for years (and since my old laptop died I haven't been able to play my aging copy of Home world 😢) so focus on collection, building and painting. However my "problem" is I flit from subject to subject. For example I used to be very focused on WH40k and have a large backlog of unbuilt sets. But in the last couple of years have switched to Mantic/Stargrave/Wargames Atlantic. More recently I started on fantasy figures with Oathmark and Frostgrave to which I have added a smattering of real world Samauri, Knights, Landsknechts with zweihanders and even Berber warriors. Currently my obsession is with Dropfleet Commander and building a large force of starships. Used to do Gothic Fleet but the resources have dried up and I prefer the Dropfleet designs. When not working on gaming minis I collect and build 1/144 aircraft, ships and afvs (where those from Victrix are gaming minis). 1/1200 and 1/1250 ships including plastic kits and pre finished diecasts. And assorted SF models with a focus on Star Trek 1/2500 scale plus the Eaglemoss ships collection. So I guess my hobby style is kinda erratic at best.....

However I've also recently got Five Leagues from the Borderlands for my birthday, and started making models for that (new kits and rebasing old models) so I have warbands and enemies. I ALSO picked up the 2nd ed rules for Dead Man's Hand, and for the last week I have been churning out scratch built wild west buildings (got four ready for painting, including a two storey saloon, and have started two more). I am terrible for focusing my fire.

I'm definitely in this boat. I get bogged down with assembly and painting, taking way too long with each phase and it burns me out. Then I don't play because I don't like fielding grey masses of troops, and this creates a cycle where nothing happens......

I like to get them assembled and give them a good zenithal prime. That way if it takes forever for me to paint them I can still enjoy using them to play because the zenithal brings out all the details.

I’ve been on and off of painting and wargaming for the last 12 years, and it’s mostly been on the “off” setting. I don’t think I’ve ever finished an entire project or army. I’m back into it with the goal of actually playing a fully-painted game. I’ve been painting the minis from the Darktide game. 5 more to go and I can finally play a fully-painted game of anything for once!

Games like Darktide (which have a finite number of miniatures) are great for feeling accomplished finishing something. Thanks for watching!

Painting is my thing, not that I’m bad (I’m bad) but I extract exactly zero joy from the process it is so unhelvably rare that I have any sort of motivation to paint that most of my stuff is unpainted I’d like to play but then there’s the roadblock off “You need to paint that”

My problem has been focusing on one group of models to the point of getting burnt out. Admittedly my threshold for burn out is embarrassingly low. Which leaves me with groups of models that are 90-95% done. This video reminds me I need to revisit those models and get the last 5-10% done and play some stinking games!

I've been struggling with this, I'm unsure how to approach army painting, I like having them at a good standard and I'm still fairly new so slow. Finding that middle ground has been tricky. I think batch painting is hurting me by spending so many hours all just on one thing/colour before moving on it's harder to see the progress. I think I'll focus on finishing a few models so I can see that end result quicker on where the others are moving towards to help with my motivation hopefully. Great video really enjoyed this.

I always paint my figs before use. Sometimes that means figs don't get used for 20+ years. The VAST majority of my opponents ( all but one guy) do not paint at all. All their armies are primer black or grey.

Great video! I'm the same way, I don't like playing with unpainted models. Luckily, I play Battletech, so I don't have to field a ton of models - though with the Mercenaries Kickstarter about to fulfill, I'm going to have a ton of models to paint. I also got an airbrush, so I'll be revisiting some of your older videos I kind of glossed over for some tips. Keep up the great work.

I paint them just enough to look good from afar and bounce around, or I have a technique I want to do an focus on making that one skill look good but let the rest just be good enough. But I like to varnish and come back to add details here and there.

I would encourage people to simplify their paint jobs and really ask themselves if every step is needed. For example do you need to edge highlight your space marines in multiple shades and a simply pass with metallics to chip the edges would be faster and look just as nice?

I agree with your sentiment of no unpainted mini's, or non 3d represented tokens. If I am going to play a mini's game, I want everything to be as immersive as possible. I build numerous tokens for mini games to represent objectives, status markers and the like. As far as focusing on one project at a time, I am for the most part that way. I will paint a squad of Tau before moving on to tokens for Silver Bayonet, then on to an M4 Sherman for Tanks for the Apocalypse, then on to an Australian infantry unit for Team Yankee. I will however, sometimes clean up my next unit, washing to remove release oils, while finishing a current project. Great video and solid guidance!

Formyself when I'm paiting I'm trying to painting different models - the one that by some reason are "started" are not hidden, but they stay in the LOS so I need to remember about them. Prefer to stop working on particular models for some time and when I have "that feeling" regarding painting them instead to rush paiting them to get some bad result. This way I finished today Skabbik's Plaguepack for WH: Underworlds - started them in the May, but in the middle I finished some dwarfs, one hero to WH: Quest and some small sidekick goblin for a big orkish-cowboy (that was finished one year ago).

I mostly follow your old advice, have two projects in parallel, so when procrastinating on one project I make progress on the other one :) And they are usually different types of models (currently chaos space marines and AoS Slaanesh) so I can paint different things and not get bored with only armor or only skin and cloth

Not to say I can't get a change of heart in my designs, but I often will try to keep to some rigidity with plans I have for certain models, lay it all out and stick to it with small adjustments if anything comes along in between time. I know that if I just endlessly look up various idk camo patterns or various involved techniques or the bigger obstacle just different new shiny models, different genres etc that fundamentally change that game plan, I just will be sitting with a lot of boxes of unpainted stuff. I am thankful for skirmish games, Kill Team etc where situations of having more rag tag looking models of similar stuff with different patterns allows me to scratch that creative itch without falling too much into a whole or feeling obliged to buy more stuff just to get an idea out of my system.

I think thats my biggest problem this year. Last year I dedicated the entire year to my necrons outside of a few side projects for contest and managed to get around 3.5k points completed. My goal for 40k 10th edition is to have my entire Necron army fully built and painted with every possible unit combination I want to achieve which should put me well over 10k points before 11th edition. This year I wanted to broaden my focus across other armies, games, and side projects. Taking a little time and focusing on some of GW's smaller offerings such as Killteam, Warcry, and Underworlds, but now I think Iv spread myself too thin. Whats worse is I cant seem to just drop an unfinished project due to my stubborness, so I sit here with barely any projects completed this year. Im a hobbyist first and gamer second so I definitely wont play games with unfinished models.

I try to actually knock out a whole project, like an entire squad, before I start something else. But even when it feels like I'm making good progress, sometimes it feels like there's still so much to do (Space Wolves have a lot more details), or I'll just get bored and want to switch it up. Then there are points where I'll hit a technical stop, like figuring out how to magnetize the far too many knights I have, but I don't want to stop building/painting. Thankfully, my pile of shame is still big enough that I don't buy too many new kits at the moment I really need to finish those knights, though...

Kill Team and Warcry are perfect for me because I have no problem maintaining interest for a group of 6 to 12 models. Larger games, like 40k and AoS are a much bigger problem. First, I tend to get bored painting the same basic thing after 20+ models. Second, the stupid rules and points costs are in constant flux, which means that you’re never truly done. So my advice would be to tailor your gaming hobby to the type of games that fit your nature in the painting hobby. So many interesting skirmish level, miniature agnostic, rule sets out there now. Two I’m looking at are Frost Grave and Rogue Warriors (from Tabletop Skirmish Games) also have to take a better look at Def Wizards... there’s a new video out recently! Maybe you’ve heard of the designers?

I tend to hop around working on and finishing small projects for many different games…..Deth Wizards being my current crush, I’m focused on terrain for the game at the moment then something else in my backlog will ignite a spark then I’m all over that and so the cycle continues….its the creation of miniature worlds that I gravitate towards …..playing is more difficult because I don’t have a dedicated space in which to do so and that also causes me stress as I can’t enjoy the thing as I would like that I’ve worked on so passionately. :/
