Thank you, Robin, for this channel. I'm in Ireland, and I can't for the life of me find an apprenticeship in Carpentry. I'm doing a kind of virtual apprenticeship here on KZbin thanks to yourself and a few others on Skill Builder, like Roger 😅 Cheers lads 🍻 👏

Also, just a thought, but a tour of the roof of Notre Dame next year would be amazing 😊
@ukconstruction4 күн бұрын
Hi Danny, I hear your pain about the apprenticeship struggles, its crazy.... we have a massive shortage of tradespeople in the UK and Ireland and yet many established businesses that could offer an apprenticeship just do not bother, mostly construction businesses rely on self employed sub contractors and sole traders to actually complete the work and it then falls on these small businesses to train and recruit!! This maybe a useful tip... pop into your local timber merchants and speak with the desk staff and ask if they know of any local contractors that maybe able to offer some work experience?? this is a good direct way to network and is effective!!! good luck and yes the Notre Dame roof is on my list of places!!!

Those oak timbers in theclast section are impressive. Im a structural engineer and I find that in old buildings/barns with trusses/purlins/rafters that the trusses are well within capacity and rafters are ok (as they are continuous over purlins andxwere put up in very long lengths that you cant get now ie over 6m) but purlins were often undersized and did bend a lot! The trusses are often sized so that you can get decent conbection (mortise/tenon etc) so are big sections. Even though those 10x8 sections are so called seasoned, as the smaller dimension is more than 100mm, the structrual codes say we must treat it is green timber and all allowable stresses have to be reduced by 20%.

Hi Robin. I love this vvdeo as it shhws a real timber merchant that know their timber and stick really good quality soft and hardwood. You wouldnt find rows at sawn oak at Travis Perkins!! Just jnexquestion and tbe first pallet of stacked timber you said was treated. Im wondering why because if its ibside the building envelope then it doesn't need treating and if it is external then it would be better to use a naturally resistant timber like oak.

Really enjoying the build series, as always, Robin. Do you have to use treated timber for the build, or is it just your preference? Here in NZ I think you can minimise the ground treated timber to the plates in contact with the concrete and use a lighter treated wood for the rest of the framing.
@ukconstruction4 күн бұрын
We just stick with the treated stuff for anything structural, we may use CLS internally and that is generally untreated. It is interesting hearing the differences between countries!!!

@ukconstruction4 күн бұрын
OSB 3 is what we go for
@clarkpiper60074 күн бұрын
@@ukconstruction I recommend never using plywood, especially OSB. lumber prices are low enough that it's economical to sheet a house with framing lumber, and we all know how much better solid lumber is structurall, as it doesn't rot in a few short years like plywoods always do. :) wood all the way :)
@clarkpiper60074 күн бұрын
@ukconstrucitoin and never treated lumber, that stuff has, and basically always will be increasingly too dangerous and unsafe to work with :(

Hi Robin Clevett, I have American white oak, what price do you pay for it at champion? ODo they sponsor the channel, so you're not interested in me selling it to you for a better deal? If you want white oak, let me know, and I can help sponsor your channel or make you the best deal on white oak if resources allow for it. Thank you, I'm a woodworker, building inspector, and tradesperson hobbiest at the moment.

An interesting video, but a full on ad. A 'second part' video with zero progress, so if anyone sees this expecting progress then feel free to skip. Though I personally do find it interesting to see the supplier side concerns, champion timber dont appear to supply outside of south london and surounding areas, and this is 14 minutes of my life I won't be getting back. You do realise this is a breach of the ASA and CAP guidelines being based here in the UK? Just pop an 'ad' watermark in the thumbnail to cover yourself. Your technical knowledge is second to none and a joy to watch, but don't push out zero content in a video and call it as such. A 'the supplier behind the project' narrative is honest, and there will be an audience interested in that.
@ukconstruction3 күн бұрын
Hi Alex, In the first 10 to 15 seconds of the video in the top left corner you will we a notice that states that there is paid promotion in this video. I see so many people make mistakes when it comes to site set up and sourcing the right products so I felt that it was an important part of the process to feature in my series and from the feedback and the number of views on this video so far in most cases viewers are happy. Its very hard to please everyone and at least with KZbin viewers can easily skip of not watch at all!!
