No one decides to start learning a foreign language one day, follows a magic formula for language learning, stays super motivated throughout the whole process, and then miraculously speaks just like a native a year later. Language acquisition doesn’t work that way for 99.9% of us. Let's talk about why we lose motivation for learning French and what we can do to fix it.

Thank you for the reassurance that I am not just an unmotivated, lazy person! I go in spurts with learning French. The hardest thing for me is comprehension. It is like a 10 second delay for my brain to compute everything. 😵‍💫

This was a timely topic for me. I´m enrolled in French 101 at the Community College and enjoying it, but struggling, also. There´s just so much to learn it can be a bit overwhelming. But I want to go back to France or to Montreal someday so I´ll keep calm and carry on. Hopefully.

Hello. As usual , a brilliant video. I am French and I love to learn foreign languages. This is because I have 2 main motivations. Number one : it is always appreciated when you travel in a country to know, at least, the basic of the language. It shows your dedication and respect and, in return, it opens many doors in terms of relationships. Number 2 : I like littérature and poetry. For English, I wanted to read Edgar Allan Poe novels in English even if one of our best poet Baudelaire translated him. I want to feel the musicality of each language and how artists compose with this. Voilà : if ever it gives some ideas:) Bisous.

Boy can I relate to this! I have tried 3 or 4 different software programs, and I didn't find any of them to be very good, for one reason or another. My biggest frustration is due to the fact that I'm an extremely logical person, so when I start encountering all those exceptions to the "rule" I just learned, it drives me crazy.

great video as usual. @8:40 "focus on the things you like" is so true. i found motivation came back for me when i started making my own audio sets off of watching news and youtube, that i could listen to in the background while doing chores, driving, etc. something where i could listen and repeat on loop. the auto-looping really made things stick

Excellent, as always. Back in the day when learning German and now learning French - there are days you say, “Wow! I’m really getting good at this!” Then there are the days when you say, “Crap! I’ll never get this!” And these days can follow one another in quick succession. As has been said so often: Learning a language is a marathon, not a sprint. Last weekend (a long one because of 1 May), I had a lot of time and watched 4 films in French. Two I understood quite well, two were a struggle. Films with actors who have theater experience are generally much easier to understand than those with some up-and-coming young whippersnappers who mumble and use a lot of “youthful” language. Of course, you want to learn to understand both, but the latter can be very discouraging. Just an anecdote for amusement: When I was at university in the States, a student once remarked that he had read somewhere that the first 20 years of learning English were easy while the second 20 years were difficult. In contrast, the first 20 years of learning German were difficult while the second 20 years were easy (no claims made here concerning the veracity of this statement). Another student quipped: “Now I know what my difficulty is! I’m in my second 20 years of English and my first 20 years of German!” Prends soin de toi !

Thank you so so much for this. I’m not learning French, but I started learning German as my first ever foreign language about a month ago. Lately, I’ve been hit by a sudden and ferocious lack of motivation for a variety of reasons. It’s been very hard to continue and I’ve thought multiple times about dropping the language entirely and never returning. Of course, I know I have to return eventually because I want to move to Germany in the future, but that future seems so far away that that girl moving to Germany feels like a different person, one I don’t have to care about. I’m still going through this but I will try your tips and I hope they work ❤

I agree with you, but……. My problem was vocabulary. I wanted to learn Japanese. No problem in about a month learning all the basics. I could read about 90% of what I saw but absolutely no retention of what the words meant. Paper flash cards, online flash cards, one word a day and on and on. Translation just didn’t stick. Very frustrating. I guess waiting until I was 60 was a mistake. All plans fell apart when the Tokyo Olympics died.

This video was so spot on! I tend to get caught up with what is in front of me to go on a daily basis. I keep thinking I'll have more free time "tomorrow"....but it doesn't seem to happen. I do need to get back up to speed as I have a house in a small town in France and no one speaks English other than the ex pat Brits. I like your suggestions on finding a few minutes here or there during the day. I think that might work best for getting back into practice. Thanks so much for the video 💗

Read a book. For me, first person fiction was easy. The Enile Ajar stories about Madame Rosa. The narrator is a young Paris street kid. I think one thing that makes it easy is when there's a lot of dialogue. It just flows.

I took French in high school for a year but learned and retained pretty much only the basics. Then I took a few Alliance Francaise French classes (in a group) once a week back in NY/NJ before I moved. But didn't study it in college or anything and had 0 exposure as a kid.

i've just discovered your videos and i'm just literally loving it ! i'm french and what you're saying about France is so accurate. perhaps you will read this and may answer two questions i've got about american language: - is that true that american use the preterit instead of past participle ? - i've often heard american omitting the "-s" at the end of the 3rd singular pronoun. why ? thanks 🇫🇷

Welcome, thanks for being here. ;-) I can try to answer your q's. Are you able to please give me some concrete examples so I'm sure I'm understanding what you're asking? We would always say 'she goes' (not she go), for example, so not sure I'm understanding ;-) Merci

sometimes i've heard things like he/she/it + verb without the -s in the present tense just like : "she don't care" instead of "she doesn't care". there are even songs with this grammatical mistake (?). and i've often heard that american don't use the present perfect tense in oral, like for instance they would always say "i lost my keys" whereas in some case, when you want to emphasize the fact that the lost of your keys has consequences in the present, you'd rather say: "i've lost my keys"... merci beaucoup de ton attention 🙋🏻‍♂️

@@GoldenScarabProd OK, so some quick thoughts. Let me preface my reply by saying I haven't formally studied linguistics and am basing my reply on my experience. Sometimes in songs, artists throw "proper" grammar rules out the window so you'll hear things like you described -- "she don't care." It's not proper sentence construction but people do speak that way sometimes too, depending on one's education and other factors. It would absolutely sound wrong to many people and you won't hear a newscaster, politician, etc. speaking this way in any professional context. Next, in American English, we're less likely to use "have got" and will just say "have." For example, "I have something to do today" instead of "I've got something..." You hear "have got" more often in British English. They're both 100% correct and proper. Saying "I have something" doesn't sound uneducated or anything like that. Hope that helps!

So much word salad, and no concrete information. What you are saying is common sense, and it seems like you are just butthurt for some reason. People want to know rough numbers and a timeline. Watch others answer the question. They actually give some information that a student of the language can use.
