It's been there since Season of Performance. I think they planned to have later quests allow you to wear costumes for the stage, but they scrapped that idea. And this they left in as an easter egg.

When you have a light prop you can place it mid air and land on it so it works like a checkpoint. I place my torch before and after the hard U turn so I can chill a bit and recharge because there are not that many reset borders. It's definitely harder but also possible. And a funny challenge.
