I really enjoyed IDW's take on what Cybertronian relationships might look like as the physical side of things wouldn't be relevant. Most media has a terrible habit of portraying love through physical attraction alone and I found the change refreshing. ... and then there's Getaway. Who somehow managed to earn more ire from the fandom then Prowl with a single act. He was written so well for a character so late to the party.

The thing I completely agree tho I do think they could explore the physical side more. Not sexual in anyway but transformers can combine even if it's just two of them. They could do a Garnet a couple who compliment eachother and in coming together forming a bigger bot with their minds mixing making up the combiner mind. We never see that! All combiners big or small are all for battle but I could see it being used for bots who just want to be together.

At least Prowl had _some_ understandable motives and intentions with the decisions he made, with a lot coming with some hard call situations. (Spoiler Alert: and at least recognized the many wrongs he committed in towards the end). Getaway, on the other hand, was a selfish and entitled jackass, through and through once he got on MTMTE and LL.

Getaway was becoming just like megatron, hates his role, hate for high command, hate for the system, his manipulation, he even fighting against a prime, he is megatron. He may have had good intentions at the start, but in the end he would just ended up just ended up the same. Never let hate control you, try move on even if it hard, if you don't, you never be Optimus, you just be another Megatron.

Megatron wanted justice even freed became actual hero to enlaved that joined him as decepticons. Difference is megatron didn't wish at all for heroism, strength, attention. I think he’s a reminder of how easily hate can morph self image and ambition into something very dangerous, if his words on his origin is to be trusted at all. His relationship with Megatron is also interesting to me because technically, like most MTOs made during the war, without Megs he won’t even exist. His birth is to be a part in someone else’s downfall, the same person he’s now sharing a space with and to him has entirely been unpunished. Now give someone like that a superiority complex and you have a living time bomb on your hand.

@@DeltaTrion I’m glad! Honestly I could rattle off about him because intentionally on the writer’s part or not I just find him to be such an interesting character. I think it’s interesting how you mentioned that people hate him in a way where they would wish that he had never existed. Getaway deserves to be punished, but I think simply getting rid of him wouldn’t solve much in the grand scheme of things. Although his actions do reflect him as a terrible person, his hatred/motivation was a result of the war he was born into. There are probably others that feel similar. Getaway just got way closer to Megs than most people and saw it as a chance to hurt the one he felt has hurt him the most. Just my interpretations of course, but I do kinda wish this aspect of his character was explored more especially since MTMTE has other great explorations of similar themes.

I think the reason why Getaway has much more hate then characters like Zeta Prime, Sunder, or even Megatron himself is because he's the textbook definition of the character who justify their ends with their means. There's an honesty, or I guess a better way to word that would be authenticity in the actions of someone like Megatron because they know they're terrible yet they don't care, and in some ways this makes us feel less conflicted, but someone like Getaway is manipulative, deceitful, and completely deluded into believing that they are greater than they actually are. He's like freaking judge Claude Frollo, believing that everyone is sinful to the core except for him. And in that way it makes it easier to hate him.

I think Getaway is super neat because he and Rodimus are very similar in ways that neither of them would ever want to acknowledge. He also is just such an interesting character to look at through a lens.

In my opinion, Getaway is more hateable than Sunder and even Megatron. While we as people may never meet a mass murderer or a mad scientist, I'm sure most of us has at least met a manipulator, someone who seems to have our best interests in mind but only sees us as a stepping stone to further their own agenda. Although I do understand why he did what he did, what he did to achieve it is abohrrent

It’s fascinating how this whole idea of “just an MTO” is remarkably similar to the Caste systems in Transformers. How Megs and Prime talk about being more than what people say you are. Getaway (and some versions of Megs) are interesting, though. Cause it shows how that ambition could easily turn to Jealousy, spite, and hate. That line is so very thin.

I found Getaway's dynamic with Rodimus Prime more interesting because someone pointed out that Rodimus kinda mirrors his behavior in a similar way as Getaway does, like he used some of Drift's money to buy the ship and paid Drift to write some of his speeches, also using Chromodome’s mnemosurgery for his own personal gain, jeopardizing his crew with zero precaution, and the entire quest started by him showing us he can be incompetent and selfish which leads to Rodimus’s Hypocrisy except he does feel guilty when he leaves the ship which shows he cares about his crew way more and trying to stick them together and even willing to sacrifice himself in the tyrest arc which, meanwhile Getaway doesn't show any type of remorse when he gives half of the crew the AMONGUS treatment even his own partner, Skids like it is for the greater good, manipulating Tailgate's feelings for his plan to kill Megatron which almost result in Cylonus getting killed, and the Mutiny, Getaway was a coward for those actions like that MTMTE means more then meets the eye with these characters a moment to tell, not defending but understanding some his actions since he has a point but I like to point out show there some nuaced things goes on in the IDW comics, anyways great character analysis on him! (Getaway Sucks)

it's fitting that rodimus is the one to have a final duel with him before he is unceremoniously turned into scraplet chow. it's even more fitting that rodimus once again affirms himself to be better than getaway by saving him, and getaway gets himself killed anyways afterwards. they're mirrors.

Getaway is monster, but at the same time, he’s also kind of a victim of the environment he was born in. He was created to be an MTO (Made To Order Soldiers) during the war and was essentially made to be disposable cannon folder during the battle, he had his first experience in battle and it deeply scared him, that he ran away in his first mission, hence his nickname, Getaways. A name he absolutely loathes secretly. He was literally created for the purpose that he was expected to die in battle for the Autobot cause. He then later believed himself to be worthy of carrying the Matrix due to the fact that he had shown “Signs of Affinity” which in turn made him develop the mental disorder called “Primus apotheosis”, which is a form of hero worship characterized by the obsessive need to specifically emulate Optimus Prime. He literally convinced himself mentally that he was the only one worthy of the title.

The ironic thing about Getaway is that under different circumstances and had he chosen not to take the actions he did with poor Tailgate, he would’ve ironically been a highly sympathetic character. Literally forced to the fight in a war the moment he came to life and being deemed a coward for running away when he barely even had his wits about him due to literally being online for all of a few seconds before getting dropped off a ship, having meant to simply be fodder. And then to soon find out that not only was the one who perpetrated the eons long war was alive, kicking and on the path to redemption, but that he actually was possibly capable of being a prime? Yeah, had he not went full gaslighter and manipulator, he’d be one of the most tragic characters in the series. And in a way, he is. But he hurt our poor Tailgate and got the DJD heading for the LL crew. Nah, all that tragic crap goes out the window at that point.

But I do agree that he probably should’ve been at least a bit more upset about being essentially fodder right at the start. But I guess enough years have passed that he probably got over it.

@@meteorknight999 What I mean by spiraling is that, initially, Megatron had waged the war on Cybertron only to get rid of the corrupt senate. Then his goals changed to enslave and/or rid the universe of organic life, non-Cybertron silicon life, Autobots, etc. Of course, there are many Autobots who are bloodthirsty, cruel, imperialistic and evil and they aren’t blameless in the slightest, but most Autobots, by their own creed, don’t agree with full scale genocide and xenocide, which Megatron fully did and was willing to continue to do so until his change of heart. And while the Autobots are definitely responsible for some travesties, a good portion of these atrocities are in response to the circumstances the Decepticons imposed on them.

MTMTE/Lost Light was the first comic book series I ever read to completion and the reveal of Getaway’s manipulation of Tailgate both completely blindsided me and felt like a stab in the gut from a side character I hadn’t thought much of till that point. The fact he was willing to send someone so innocent and pining for connection to be slaughtered for his own selfish ambitions made me more pissed than I had ever been at a fictional character. Marooning Rodimus and the squad to be hauled off by the space feds, trapping people in mental prisons forever, refusing to help other planets in need to pursue his Primehood, attempted murder of a war hero just for talking back to him, working with a notorious serial killer to lobotomize the entire crew into thinking he’s best captain while feeding a majority of them to said killer as payment, later sacrificing all his supposed friends to Scorponok and letting them be turned into sparkeaters just to cover his own ass. Even Atomizer, the ONE bot actually on his side from the start, the literal second he noticed how unhinged things had gotten and tried to speak out, Getaway tore him apart with his bare hands and made people forget he existed. Im happy Rodimus got his catharsis by giving up his self-destructive vendetta against Getaway, but im not gonna act like I didn’t cheer like a schoolboy when that conniving backstabbing little scrapheap got gobbled up by his own scraplets.

It's really interesting to see Getaway fall into the same cycle of abuse as Megatron, but the big difference is there's only selfish motives behind Getaway and no sympathy in his origins.

This is a really strong video, dude. Great work! What I like about the whole Getaway thing, is how it starts off with him being much more relatable and sympathetic...his disbelief over the Rod Pod during Dark Cybertron established him as an "outsider" for me, a sort of audience surrogate for viewing all the ridiculous and hard to swallow things that Rodimus & Crew get up to - and that flows into the stuff with Megatron, where, on the face of it, it's hard not to see his point... It's understandable that for many characters, having the Autobots' greatest enemy on board and in a leadership position is a slap in the face. You can see how the schism happens, but as you get to know Getaway for the scumbag he is, you begin to realize that he's just capitalizing on grievances via appalling means and in pursuit of ignoble ends.

Really cool analysis again, and I'm glad to see you dipping into IDW again heh. I'd like to add one to the whole "Getaway is an attention seeking narcissist" in that removing Megatron was never truly his main goal, but more just attaining the status as captain for himself. We know this because Dark Cybertron gave subtle implications of Getaway's growing lack of respect towards Rodimus. And both Getaway and Atomiser had been plotting against Rodimus during Megatron's trial, trying to provoke Rodimus into kicking crew members off the ship, something that would get him demoted. Mind you, this happens all before Megatron becomes captain of the Lost Light. Now, was Getaway justified in hating Megatron and the decision to give him a second chance? Absolutely. But if anything, Megatron on board the ship gave Getaway more ammo for the fuel. It gave him a better reason for a coup since everyone already had a collective hatred towards Megatron, instead of someone collectively loved by Rodimus. Kicking Megatron off the ship was never his end goal, but just a means to an end so he could achieve his glory.

Getaway was a very well crafted villain. The characters I despised in the first IDW run were Aileron, Pyra Magna and Oiler. 2nd IDW Pyra Magna was much more compelling.

I remember he was one of my favourites while reading idw and he still is, I do think it brings up a greater issue in mtmte and lost light which is that from what I remember almost everyone who wants megatron to suffer for his crimes is made out to be a mentally ill villain (this demonizes mental illness by associating it with antagonistic behavior, which is a recurring theme in the series. also directly stating getaway groomed tailgate while never directly stating megatron groomed tarn and multiple others. ) but keep in mind I have not read mtmte or lost light for ages now so my memory of the comics isnt the best anyhow, getaway is so fascinating to me and I 100% agree with everything Getaway says about Megatron. even if the way they ultimately handled him in the end did make me feel a bit disappointed. hes truly truly horrible and I love him so much as a character and I'm glad theres a video on him that doesn't disregard everything other than saying hes the scum of the earth and should suffer for all of eternity. off topic tangent I suppose the reason I hate megatron so much more than getaway is because of generational trauma so I'm very much biased, but I do find it really interesting how people dislike or like certain characters more depending on how close they hit to home anyway, neat video. getaway is also one of my favourites from mtmte/ll lol and i also love your reply^^ ur so right on how getaway was written to say that he flat out groomed tailgate whereas megatron was written to say that he "corrupted tarn" and like how harsh one phrase is to the other if that makes sense?? im not very good at english either lol but youve managed to put a lot of my thoughts into words on how i feel about getaways character C: at the end it feels like getaways point about megatron partially was never challenged in the comics for me, because (spoilers? idk if this is spoilers omg) we see very little of megatron doing much to help society onces hes shifted sides like we see him help the main crew multiple times but outside of that? were /told/ that megatron was the main man in a revolution in an alternative universe and didnt resort of mass murder this time, but it feels a little empty because that universe never suffered the effect of a millions year war that he was one of the conductors of. and. omg. this is getting horrible off topic. but it feels like we got to see megatron really change and refute getaways points about it and were just told that Yep! hes a great medic now! idk. i just really like talking about getaway and im so happy i found a comment that talks about the writing flaws of his character and what he misses the mark on. ur english is def great btw i just wanted to say❤ lol

Throughout MTMTE (the first 50 issues or so before Lost Light) Getaway was actually one of the more sympathetic characters to the audience! Like u said, lots of people actually agreed on the mutiny, especially with the number of times the rodimus crew put the rest of the crew in danger and the fact that they so easily forgave megatron after everything. Getaway only started getting way more hate when the writer, James Roberts, made his actions WAY more evil and unsympathetic because he didn’t want the audience to agree with Getaway. It kind of removed the intresting gray area within the comic, which was rlly disappointing because Getaway could’ve been so much better than a crazy psycho villain. Awesome video, i love these IDW vid essays!

Ugh yes!!! This was a great video! I love how the camera pans past Getaway towards Whirl at 0:50 in a little misdirect. Other commenters touched on this point that Getaway was incredibly relatable, in how he pulls us away from the absurdity that is not only Megatron, but the Lost Light's journey. To add to that point, and gearguts7259's, Getaway is not only That Manipulative Person we've all met, but the ugliest byproduct of resentment and envy that I think we can all relate to. "I hate that this happened to me", "I should have gotten that promotion, why them and not me?" and other thoughts and feelings that are totally normal to experience... but extremely abnormal to scam and mutiny over lol. He's a relatable in a way that's just extra uncomfortable for us to accept, I think, so we'd much rather hate him!! I really enjoyed the excerpt of Getaway's monologue that you read, you have a great cadence that makes his words very easy to take in. Enjoyable video as always! They're so succinct, and just the right length that I can set my other business aside, sit down and meditate over This Specific Aspect of Transformers for a While, and it's been really fun! (Not to say that I wouldn't watch if they were longer, though!)f

9:50 Adding more to this: Starscream is self-aware about all the horrible deeds he has done, Megatron tries to atone for what he has done. While Getaway would rather sulk and be spiteful and drown himself in "woe is me" attitude instead of learning from his past and using it as a means to empower himself so he could be the prime he always dreamed of being; he instead manipulates and crushes people with his two faced attitude and in his eyes he is doing it for the greater good. Just like what he accuses Megatron of doing. Expect Megatron is actually changing into a better person while Getaway is deluding himself into believing he is the victim of the problems he has caused.

To be honest, Getaway is a victim of Megatron, his whole narrcistic-sociopathic personality was molded out of a desperation to survive the war and find a meaning to his life. Getaway was born into the War, he had no real ties to anything before it and once the war was over, what esle there was for him? Getaway never had the choice to become such a sociopathic person, but he still had choices, I argue he has the right to be angry at Megatron, but literally everything he did to handle himself was wrong. His need for purpose, validation and justice transformed into egocentricness and vengeance.

@@robotx9285 I totally agree with you. He has every right to be mad at Megatron, the world and the Autobots for letting Megatron off the hook way too easily. I find myself agreeing with Getaway about all that he said about Megatron. But the thing is they are both so similar in terms of backstory, they both were made as machines of war and nothing more. Both of them believed they could be something more. Both of them had a scorching rage against the world that had wronged them. But ultimately Megatron broke out of the cycle of violence and anger while Getaway kept on pushing and pushing, hurting people around him and himself until finally his actions caught up to him and he got what was coming. I love Getaway because he is a tragic character and a good villain. As well as a good foil to Megatron's redemption to make us see that Megs grew past his anger and is learning from his mistakes.

MTMTE Getaway is basically All Hail Megatron's version of Spike (morally ambiguous maverick on the side of justice) done right. Instead of an angsty, reckless, womanising braggart who gets away with his actions (most of which would've gotten him dishonourably discharged on the spot) because of plot armour, Sparkplug's position and/or needing to give Skywatch a recognisable face, Getaway is smart enough to bide his time and back his claims up with a seemingly reasonable explanation. It's only when he crosses the line by manipulating a child - which is what Tailgate is - into essentially becoming a patsy that more and more people see through the cracks.

I feel like people in general tend to hate characters who mess with others on personal level more than big time villains Sakura from Naruto used to be the most hated character on MyAnimeList because, among other things, she was repeatedly being mean to the titular character (and was also weak and cried a lot in the first part) There was also that teacher character in Harry Potter, Dolores Umbridge, I think, who was hated way more than the big bad Voldemort People seemingly feel their misdeeds stronger and more relevant to themselves

To compare Getaway to Starscream would be an insult to Starscream, and that's saying something and I like ol Screamer though that can depend on how he's written. And there are different iterations. Guys like Thunderscracker, Prowl or Ironhide might be good. Maybe even Roadbuster or Overlord. I'm still holding out for logic man Shockwave lol Good vid man

In a way getaway is understandable, the by product of a war that claimed so much... and worse as a person who was made just to be a weapon. His goal from the moment his life started was to fight decepticons and eventually see the fall of Megatron. If they had failed and megatron won, is one thing, but to have megatron be allowed to walk away from it(Atleast in his view) was unacceptable. Just like the megatron in armada said "If one of us doesn't die then the entire war was a waste of time and all those who died died for nothing"(Or something like that) This is the understandable part of getaway. A thought that justice not only wasn't served, but it was blatently let go of for the sake of being 'better' than the other guy. It's when we reach the rest of his character that truly unravels him as a sympathetic by product of a war. To a self obsessed maniac. Ego driven, wanting recognition. Manipulating people in the deepest most cruel ways like the love they have for another. It's all the dar side of him. He is infact a more dangerous version of starscream. Cowardly, self serving, egotistical and charismatic. I do believe he's a bit mixed up, not that is entirely a liar like Starscream is shown to be in certain contiuaties, but instead that he is a mix of these more negative emotions and the more sympathetic ones. It's more like a rationalization, that his more negative traits come out because of this one more understable emotion. Similiarly to megatron who at one time had a point, but it slowly became corrupted by sheer bloodlust and warseeking. And it seems he really did start to act like an totally unhinged megatron as time went on. Everyone could be sacrificed for him after a point. Even questions got you killed. It also shows that the autobots are not unified atleast not entirely. We are always shown Autobots to be paragons of good, flawed but good. And to see one that isn't, or atleast doesn't entirely agree with their ideals is interesting in a way. It may also be a showing of how Getaway didn't choose to be an autobot, he was built to be one. he never had the choice hewas just made for war. And someone who has grown only on war will likely be a bit messed up.

i knew a person who actually liked getaway in the "hes fun to hate" way and while i think getaway is a good character that should absolutely be talked about, it was really weird seeing that person go around being like "oh heres a getaway playlist!" "im gonna make my pfp getaway!" bc getaway is one of those characters that feel personal when u hate him. i think getaway is justified up until certain points in what he does and how he thinks. hes both a victim and an abuser and i think its extremely based of the writers to have at least one character who hates megatron THAT much bc it reminds us of how bad his actions were. but at the end of the day, getaway is a horrible person. hes an example of how hate, even hate that is completely justified and understandable, can turn us into monsters if you let yourself be consumed by it. megatron's justified hate for the senate and oppression turned him into the reason why countless more bots died and suffered, and it turned him into a dictator. the kind of person he hated and used to fight against. getaway's justified loathing for megatron turned him into the exact kind of person megatron used to be, making him just as bad of a person even if his destruction wasn't on the same scale as megatron's.

Getaway is an interesting character, from a G1 geologist nobody, to one of the worst of the worst in TF lore. (Also, Getaway's tragic backstory PALES in comparison to the rest of the bots in IDW)

Getaway has very short site. And while megatron dose what he dose bc of his believe in changing society. ( and got mess up + change into warload.) Getaway is villan who dose things for himself. In real situation that kind of person is the one who commit mess muder for his own benefit. He tell big word but never achive anything. Bc he never has some kind of belive he has while act somthing. I didn’t like Getaway, felt he was tonally flat and that he should’ve never been an Autobot. But this changed my perspective. Him being bread for war should suffer a fate similar to a clone trooper for Star Wars. Him being obsessed with bringing down the enemy even though they’re now disbanded is his character. The war is over but not for him, he didn’t get justice, he didn’t win

Well, I would like to say, I don’t like the idea of an evil Autobot, maybe a corrupted or misguided one, but not evil, that said, I can see why IDW would want to have at least one Evil Autobot to add completely to what is right and wrong, though I have seen a few Comments and even some Fanfic where they would depict Getaway as a “Morally Dubious” Autobot, one who genuinely means well and cares about his Autobot comrades, but is welling to make questionable deals with those he shouldn’t be to get what he needs to help the Autobots the best way he can, even if he’s not proud of making deals with the wrong bots to get what he thinks he needs, but what do you think about that concept for a different depiction of Getaway for a different story?

I personally think its completely fine to not want robot Hitler to be redeemed and to plot his downfall, regardless of the means. Y'all would sympathize with HItler if someone wrote a convincing argument and didn't use any proper nouns. Edit: Im faaaar from getting through the IDW comics though, but, Getaway did nothing wrong. He manipulated someone into attempting a JUST murder. (and got horribly punished for it, thus why he hates rodimus. Getting tortured is totally a reasonable punishment for trying to kill robot Satan /s ) Y'all wouldn't kill hitler if he was sleeping right in front of you? Unguarded? Even if he did a few good things and had a "change of heart," he still killed millions. (billions in megatrons case)

He was right about one thing; Megatron got it easy. After all the atrocities he commited, all the deaths, how could anyone truly forgive him? The reason 'why' he did it was understandable, but not what came after. And besides, IDW had a serious problem with characters simply being forgiven while others aren't. Prowl pays for his actions and manipulations, even gets arrested, but Suntreaker is not put on trial for his betrayal. Gateway is eaten alive by scraplets, but the mutiners who sided with him are simply forgiven. Please tell me I'm not the only one bothered by this.

More Than Meets the Eye is part of IDW's phase 2, which occurs after the war. i'm not exactly sure where you should start with the IDW Transformers comics (cus there's so much) but MtMtE is enough of a self-contained and well written story that you can honestly just read without needing to know much else. just know that: - by the time MTMTE happens, the war is over, and the Autobots won - it canonically occurs in parallel to Robots in Disguise, another series of comics that features the Decepticons, neutrals, and the other Autobots -- the ones who didn't leave Cybertron aboard the Lost Light (such as Bumblebee, Prowl and Wheeljack) - MTMTE and RiD have a brief crossover in the Dark Cybertron arc in the middle of both series - the sequel to MTMTE, Lost Light (not to be confused with the ship its named after) is honestly worse than MTMTE but still kinda worth reading. i love MTMTE so much. it gives so much character to so many original and more obscure characters. its more light-hearted (mostly), fun and emotional than other Transformers media. without it, characters like Swerve, Pipes, Tailgate, Hoist, Getaway, Brainstorm, Chromedome, Skids and Rewind would not be characters people care about or even know. oh and of course my favourite bot from the entire franchise is featured in MTMTE. Nautica. she's an original character that has had no prior depiction in Transformers.
