Very "hands on" and "step by step" video, Jim. Good stuff. The only change I would STRONGLY recommend is that before replacing the switch cover.....even before TAPING the wire nuts on....is to turn on the power to TEST that the job WAS done correctly. (No offense to YOU....but you're not doing OURS! We klutzes are! LOL) This avoids any surprises and backtracking. (re: your comment at 14:10 "if we did our job correctly!" It'd be a shame to have to disassemble everything if it ISN'T correct). :-)

Of the 2 red traveller wires (solid red and red with the white line) are they basically the same and does it matter which one is tied to the existing black and red wires coming out of the wall?

This was one of my questions, too. I attached green to ground (bare copper wire, in my case), red to red, white (from the wall) to red (from the switch, marked with a label) and black (from the wall, previously attached to the old switch with a black screw) to black (from the new switch). Seems about right.

Great video but what’s the solution if both switches don’t work correctly. I just installed a Leviton three way dimmer switch in my upstairs hallway. I turned the light on at the top of the stairs and then I went to the bottom to turn the light off and it worked but when I came back upstairs the light won’t cut back on. I then have to go back downstairs to turn the light back on. I get the same results in reverse, if I turn the light on at the bottom of the stairs and then go upstairs the light does turn off but if I go back downstairs I can’t get the light back on. What am I missing here? The hot is connected to the black and I thought the traveler wires were interchangeable. I’m lost and so sick of running down to the fuse box. 🙂 Please help. 👏🏽

Had the exact swap. One thing not shown is the secondary switch will NOT turn the lights on without the new dimmer 3-way being switched on. If the new 3-way dimmer is turned off, you can not turn the lights on from the secondary switch. Not a big deal with me, just don't understand why. At first, I thought I mixed up the Feeders but I had the exact setup, black feeder to red, red feeder to red/white

I made my first comment, below, because I've followed the instructions given here "to a T".....and I'm getting no joy. My front hall light is operated by EITHER a switch in the kitchen OR the one at the front door. I want to put a DIMMER in place of the on/off only switch in the kitchen. I've checked to find which is the "live" line (turns out it's the Red one, not the usual black), and attached it to the "different" color terminal on my new Lutron dimmer switch. Attached the remaining black and white to the OTHER two (brass) terminals and the green to ground. Everything looks great.....BUT this new switch (and dimmer) will ONLY work if the other switch, down at the front door is ON! Obviously NOT what I want. Suggestion?
@michaelscott3563 жыл бұрын
OK, situation fixed. I hadn't "tagged" the wires I took off the old NON-dimmer switch so I couldn't determine WHICH one went on WHICH terminal. I finally found another guy's video where he said "just label the wires in the box with painters tape...#1, #2 and #3.....then attach them to ANY of the 3 terminals on the switch. If it doesn't work, just play "musical terminals" (like musical chairs) and keep moving them around, in sequence: move wire 1 to where wire 2 was, etc until you STUMBLE on the combo that works. Worked on the second "pattern" I tried. Yippee!
