Another great use of the binder-clip is to completely close curtains in the hotel room. I have been in too many rooms where the curtains don't come together and will allow a beam of sunlight, streetlight, etc. to come through which is almost always in my eyes while sleeping.

This is all great advice! Although be careful in Japan as it’s one of the only countries in the world where non-resident foreigners must have their passport on them at all times. If you’re stopped by the police, they may ask to see your ID and the visitor entry stamp (sticker) in the passport. If you happen to have a Japanese residence card, there is no requirement to keep your passport with you.

You are SO right about hotel safes, Maurice. Not only do staff know the universal code that opens all their safes, but so do former employees and friends of employees who tell their other friends. Often the universal codes are brilliant, like 1234 or 0000. All the safes do is make it easier for thieves to find all your valuables at once. Fast in, fast out, hit the next room. Have spent 8 of last 32 years on travel for work. A lot of good advice here, one thing missing is the fake wallet. Real wallet goes front pocket of pants. Second wallet contains several 1,000 Mexican peso bills, Greek drachma bills and even some French franc bill, along with a couple of old hotel key cards and several of those fake credit card you used to get in the mail when they tried to get you to sign up. It also hold the evenings bar cash. This one goes in the back pocket and is used in public; for any pickpocket eying you it seems like a good target. Passport also goes in front pocket in a Ziplock bag. Also have a travel laptop, has never been in contact with work or personal computers. Files I need for travel go on to a thumb drive get loaded on to the travel laptop and then thrown away, one use only. Anything I need to download get printed out when get back on a stand alone printer that only knows the travel laptop and then scanned/OCR on work scanner. Separate travel phone with travel WeChat account, separate travel email address. Spent over 2 years total in China and can't remember the last time my safe wasn't gone through.

I’d recommend a door wedge and whistle if someone tries to get into your hotel room at night. They won’t be able to open your door, even if they have a key, and if they keep trying just blow the whistle and see them run. It came in handy for me when travelling in Africa.

The most key part of my travel kit, which I use for EDC as well, is a little shoulder bag that goes around my neck/shoulder and sits directly below one arm. All of my essentials (including passport) are kept in it, and it's roomy. I can wear a jacket over it, and it's completely protected. I take it everywhere I go and never leave it behind, or take it off. It's always directly under my arm and jacket. Because of how the strap wraps around too, it's hard to steal as the strap will get tangled with my clothes.

Personally speaking a flashlight is one of those things that people don't think of when it come to essential gear. I've been advocating for a long time that more women should carry tactical flashlights on them rather than using keys, learning martial arts or any other form of self defense. A good tactical flashlight (at least a 1000 Lumens) with strobing mode from nitecore plus being able to sprint a few hundred feet/meters is good enough to get out of trouble. A lot of assault comes from opportunity rather than planned, so running away just makes it way harder to do anything. I personally carry two, a nightcore thumb for daily edc and the insane TM9K for just about any night activity or day trips.

If your goal is to illuminate attackers should the need arise a flashlight with a magnet at the back is a little more effective. Shine it, quickly attach it to a fence or pole still directed at the enemy and run. Likely they wont have any clue which way you went by the time they get to the light and get it turned off.

In a previous life I was out about 40 weeks a year, mainly in the US but often to Europe with short notice and ended up with a really similar system. For flashlights, my personal preference was/is a stream light protac dual fuel. They accept either 123 or AA batteries and really take a beating. Not quite as friendly as a rechargeable light but accepting two types of battery made it easy to keep running anywhere.

For my personal experience, never put your passport in a leather cover even if it has a lining as Leather stains, especially when it's hot and humid outside. If you want to protect your passport , get a transparent cover that fits the size of your passport. Then put it in a zip lock bag and throw a small anti-moisture pack inside. Humidity oxidizes the microchip and its antenna. This delicate electronic gear inside your passport should last for ten years.

very good. As for the bag/travel sling. I guess I would say the alpaca. The one thing I don't like about it is the strap. The buckle is nice, but I prefer the straps that attach the the bags via D rings. This gives you the opportunity to extend the straps with 2 couple of carabiners on each end. I'm a big person, 6'4" and often the slings that fit some one in the 5'9" range fit more like a noose on me. Happy trails

Here's a pro advice: Don't hide your passport in your hotel room (e.g. clipping it to curtains, hiding it underneath the mattress, etc.). It's much more likely that you'll forget it there, rather than that a theft will occur inside the hotel room. I've seen it happen and we had to drive back for 2h on a dirt road in Uganda because my brilliant travel buddy had left his passport underneath the mattress. Please don't. If you really have to hide it, then hide it inside your luggage or laundry.

I text myself little notes all the time. What to get from the store or a song to look up later. Just be weird havinf to carry a pen and pad when my phone takes up so little space on it's own

@@TrackerRoo Exactly. Doesn't make sense to me to have physical paper and pen when you have a notes app on your phone

My opinions on this stuff Passport wallet - imo is always necessary since it's annoying to keep documents and boarding pass together without it. cellphone accessories - Who doesn't bring cell phone stuff? Wallet - Again who doesn't bring their wallet with them regularly? Drivers license - You should generally bring ID with you at all times. Like what? Flashlight - Dumb. the extra half second you might, keyword here, buy trying to flash a person might be useful but it also might get you killed as you reach for it like its gonna do something. The clip - ain't a bad Idea, I don't trust foreigners in hotels either.

I think you need to do a video on flashlights. I had no idea there were so many types and use cases! I want to get one for my husband for his birthday. Thanks!

When I travel for work, I always have a HDMI cable with me. Hook it up to the hotel room tv and voilà, you have an additional monitor for your laptop.

I really like that phone case with clip. But I also need one that I can use in a rental car. I see that they make a compatible car mount for $45. It looks like it mounts with a glue tab. And it claims that it can be removed without damage. You need to use dental floss to remove it. And some extra pads incase you switch cars.

Great travel tips. I also travel with a small flashlight…as I always tell myself that I’m never going to use it in my trip…but end up using it. A definite must travel edc piece.

Clipping your passport behind a curtain is one of the more insane travel suggestions I’ve heard, I live in New Zealand, a very safe place to travel where (unlike many countries) tourists won’t be pulled over by police and asked to show their passports routinely, and would never even do that here. Also maybe use clear, simple language (e.g. “thinking” rather than “ideation”), might make your videos a bit more appealing (especially when you keep saying you’re making other choices in the video for efficiency/clarity, but then consistently use verbose language and acronyms).
