For the first time, Kristen & Achara watch the iconic 1989 classic Batman, which follows billionaire Bruce Wayne as he dons the mantle of Batman to protect Gotham City from crime, facing off against the maniacal Joker, who seeks to spread chaos. As Batman battles his nemesis, he must also navigate his complicated relationship with journalist Vicki Vale.
Directed by Tim Burton (Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, Sleepy Hollow), the film stars Michael Keaton (Beetlejuice, Birdman, Spotlight), Jack Nicholson (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, The Shining, A Few Good Men), Kim Basinger (L.A. Confidential, 9½ Weeks, Never Say Never Again), Robert Wuhl (Arli$$, Bull Durham, Blue Chips), Pat Hingle (The Grifters, Hang 'Em High, Maximum Overdrive), Billy Dee Williams (The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, Lady Sings the Blues), and Jack Palance (Shane, City Slickers, Tango & Cash).

This the best Alfred as a father figure we have had on the live screen . The Alfred that called Bruce and all the Robins "His Sons" that we see in the comics. All we were short of , was seeing Alfred with a shotgun , an him telling Bruce that he will never find all of Alfred's guns , so don't waste your time looking, that we also got in the comics.

One of the most iconic lines in comic book movie history imo. Along with Joker's "Where does he get those wonderful toys?" and of course, "Ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?" The movie is simply epic in every way. I remember seeing in the theater when it came out, the line to get in was insanely long. I think it took like an hour to get in there. The movie was THAT big. But totally worth it.

Michael Keaton as Batman is one of the biggest gambles that ever paid off in movie history. Keaton was mostly known for comedies, so casting him as Batman understandably made studio executives nervous. But it worked!

And the only live action rendation of Batman we had prior to this was the Adam West 1966 tv series. Wich was alot more comical and light hearted and was seen as cheesy and tacky before nostalgia gave it the badge of honour it has now.

There have been many iterations of Alfred Pennyworth throughout the years, but most people agree that Michael Gough was one of the best of all time. Rather than being a badass who trained Bruce, or a wise stoic who gave sage council, Michael Gough portrayed him with a warm and caring grandfatherly love that gave comfort and support whenever it was needed. RIP Michael G!!!

Movie fun fact: The set for the "Axis chemicals" raid is the same set used for the "processing facility" in ALIENS (1986). The catwalk where "Jack" falls into the vat of green acid is where the Marines are first attacked by the xenomorphs. The catwalk where Batman throws the little smoke bomb and "disappears" is the same spot where Vasquez says "Let's Rock!!!!!" in ALIENS. The scene where the Batmobile leaves Axis as it's blowing up is the same area where Ripley drives the APC and crushes the xeno.

That little laughing bag at the end confuses newer audiences. In the 1980s everybody knew, it was a popular novelty item you could buy at any magic shop or Spenser's Gifts at the mall, so it was a nice cute macabre joke that Joker had one laughing* with his body broken on the ground. It's in the same category as whoopee cushions, hand buzzers and squirting flowers (other things Joker enjoys). After movie commentary: Kristen shows us how Harley Quinn happens. * I originally had "laughing at him" there, but as somebody pointed out the effect is more that he's still laughing, which I agree with.

What people need to understand is, before this movie came out, the only Batman we had was the 1960s silly one. Tim Burton gave the superhero genre a big shot in the arm.

The impact this movie has had on the character is very big. From the definitive Batman score, the aesthetic for Gotham City and the best Batmobile design. Although admittedly not everything about it has aged the best like Batman casually killing people or Joker being the one who killed Batman's parents. Plus the relationship with Vicki Vale was kinda forgettable. Although it's because of this film that we got the greatest adaptation of Batman outside the comics which is Batman The Animated Series.

I was so glad to see this reaction pop up in my sub box. Batman 1989 was my introduction into the character and I've been a fan ever since. I was 6 years old when this movie came out and I couldn't shut up about it lol. Even today, it's one of my favorite Batman movies of all time next to Batman Begins and The Batman. The production design, the cast and their performances, the music score, the batmobile design, you name it. I love it. I'm glad you two dug it as well.

Kristen & Achara dressing up as Princess Leia watching Star Wars, yes please. As for Batman 1989, I really like this movie, I think they did a great job with the effects considering there was no CGI then. The Studio said, Tim Burton went to dark with the movie, but I think they didn't go dark enough. I think it was the Batman everybody needed at that time, it paved the way for all future Batman.

Nice reaction - the 2nd milestone for A-list superhero movies - 1978 Superman showed it was possible, to bring such a character out of the comic and into a mainstream Hollywood movie, striking the right balance - 1989 I think was the first such movie that promised instead to take the audience and bring them inside the comic book - was this the 1st auteur superhero movie, very much sold as a Tim Burton movie, w a dose of lunacy, w his Fritz Lang Expressionist cityscape - and Burton shocked fans by choosing Beetlejuice as Bruce, someone crazy enough to dress as a bat As I recall, apart from Burton's vision and the promise of a more serious comic book vision, the main selling point was Jack, one of the biggest stars of the day - that casting on its own was high concept enough to sell the whole movie -

1:03:00 Mark! I used to eat the "Batman" cereal that was made as a movie tie-in back then! 😊 But anyway, as long as "Harvey Dent" was Billy Dee Williams, he was one of the good guys! 👍 As soon as he became a White guy who looked like Tommy Lee Jones, only then did he become a Super-Villain! As such, he got to have two girlfriends at the same time! The damsel duo known as "Sugar & Spice"! Drew Barrymore as "Sugar" dressed in white as befitting her moniker, with "Spice" played by actress Debi Mazar, who wore spicy colors. ❤ They were a surprise to me because my "Sugar & Spice" comics were about a sister and her brother who were small/young children like "Dennis The Menace" and so many others! 😅

This 1st Batman was shot at Pinewood Studios in England. The Gotham City set was gigantic, it covered approx 30-40 acres of the studio backlot & cost Warner Brothers a fortune to build from scratch. Did you know "Gotham" is a place in England & has a very interesting history of how it became a New York term, which would then go on to influence the name "Gotham City" for Batman 🤯

However, within the universe of "The Drew Carrey Show" he won it, but it had a working jet engine! Unlike Jay Leno, Drew couldn't handle it, and he wrecked it or something.
