@@Viglin123 I was just thinking the same thing. Whenever someone starts a conversation about "sequels that are just as good or better than the original" people always bring up Aliens and Terminator 2, but no one ever brings up Lethal Weapon 2, which I think is much better than the (still good) original.

I used to prefer LW2 over 1, it's an incredible sequel. But over the years I've come to appreciate how strong the first one is, it really is a perfect film. The only knock I have against 2 is that it kind of makes the tension of Riggs' suicidal nature in the first half of LW1 redundant, because we know he's going to survive, but imo it's worth it. Love Joss Ackland and Derrick O'Connor's villains too.

This whole series (all 4 movies) is about character development and evolution. Absolutely one of the best movie series in history. A fantastic story about both Riggs and Murtaugh, and their growth together as "family". Because of my own personal history (I was widowed in 2006, and subsequently went through an "I don't care if I live or die" period, before learning how to just "get on with life"), I identify more with Riggs than Murtaugh, but I have to say, the way they go from being "forced partners", to being "family" is great storytelling. All 4 movies tell that story, in a very natural progression of relationships and story. More characters are added as the story goes along, but I highly recommend watching all 4 movies. Taken in context, I don't think y'all will be disappointed in the story's progression.

Fun facts: the name Martin means “martial” or “soldier” and Murtaugh is an archaic word meaning “navigator.” Their names refer to what they needed to be for each other. Roger Murtaugh was a navigator for Martin Riggs during a difficult time when Martin needed a North Star to guide him. Martin was a soldier when Roger needed one to help him save his daughter. They both literally saved each others’ lives by being who they are.

Best buddy cop film ever. Gibson and Glover's chemistry was second to none. Gibson really nailed this role and deserved a Best Actor nomination. Totally agree to your points about the Murtaugh family. They felt like a real family and not some forced, manufactured, cookie-cutter Hollywood family. For example, the 2 younger kids doing that rap to mock their older sister's crush on Riggs felt natural and funny.

I have watched many reactions to this movie and I am always amazed at how people don't understand why the fight at the end between Riggs and Joshua had to happen. Like, hasn't the final "mano a mano" battle between protagonist and villain been a standard trope of stories since...forever? No you can't "just shoot him"! Where is the drama and tension and victory in that??? And also, I always thought it was implied that the two of them had beef since the war (if not personally then between their factions) which is why Riggs challenged if Joshua wanted "another shot at the title". At which point you have to take him down personally to show total humiliation and defeat. I wish more of the humour would have made it into this reaction too. It's not just about Riggs being Lethal. His personality and charm really matter as well.

The screenplay was written by Shane Black which was his first sold screenplay at 23 years old in '85. He was Hollywood's first rock-n-roll screenwriter. His buddy cop reinvention update at the time started a modern genre craze of two mismatched partners thrown together to solve that films' mcguffin or mystery box, if you will, and that 80's trend has never gone away. Black went on to do future at the time instant classics such as 1991's Bruce Willis neo-noir in coke The Last Boy Scout, Geena Davis as the original Jason Bourne, gender-reversed amnesiac assassin in '96's The Last Kiss Goodnight with Samuel L. Jackson, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang with a just pre-Iron Man's Robert Downey Jr. showing his incredible acting chop range playing the anti-Tony Stark teamed with Val Kilmer which is a must-see and The Nice Guys from 2014 starring Ryan Gosling as his greatest cinematic comedic creation put to screen who steals every scene he's in joined by Russell Crowe in a caper set at the just tail end of the late 70's to, what else?, solve a crime. Also a must-see. Shane Black rules pretty hard.

There are 4 of these and they only get better. The family story expands across all of them.

You both said you love the family, so I can pretty much guarantee you will enjoy the rest of the movies and even the TV show. The family is integral to the entire franchise in wonderful ways.

You have only watched chapter 1 of the Lethal Weapon movie. To complete the story, you must watch all 4. They are not "sequels" but continuation of the same story with further character development and even added loved characters. I encourage you to finish the movie.

Palos Verdes is not in Long Beach. Someone stated that it's close by. If you consider 12 miles away close, I guess. But what's really important is thanks to this reaction, Detective Riggs will henceforth be known to me as Lethal Weapon.

ORIGINALLY IN THE SCRIPT THERE WAS NEVER GOING TO BE A SEQUEL IN FACT THEY ACTUALLY SHOT A DIFFERENT ENDING WHERE THEY SLIP OFF GOING THEIR SEPARATE WAYS.... THEY QUITE LITERALLY CHANGED IT THE LAST MINUTE DURING THE SHOOT.... Everyone one the set loved how great of a chemistry both guys had... That they lobbied to changed it last minute.... And the fact that this one film made three more is amazing.... So please guys come back and watch 2-4 their just as fun as this one...

It's a fantastic film and it's always worth a re-watch whenever I see it on TV. It's also one of the most consistent film series out there, IMO, with the real-life friendship between Gibson and Glover being the glue that keeps it all together. I hope you'll continue the series.

Gotta see the rest relatively soon, don't wait too long, LW2 was a great sequel, perhaps the best one, LW3 wasn't that good but worth watching, and LW4 is a nice wrap up of the series. 🤔

that was one of the best reactions of this film 👏. i especially liked how you pointed out the part where Riggs answers (truthfully) on whether he liked murtaugh's wife's cooking - that showed me you gals were on a different level lol. honestly, i didn't think two ladies would understand the dynamic of two dudes better than other dudes

Shane Black loves Christmas. This, Iron Man 3, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, The Long Kiss Goodnight, and The Nice Guys. None considered Christmas movies because much like Die Hard they take place at Christmas but aren't about the holiday.

Brings a joy to my heart to see you guys watching some 'classics'. I put that in quotes b/c I tend to think of actual classics as being older, like Casablanca and the like. But, these are getting on in years, too, and am happy to see you guys give these a... whirl... and if you like them, great. If not, there are still plenty of others that you guys might.

I love first-time Reaction video people, but I am offended when someone has not already seen a movie that I love. That's why I only see reaction videos of movies or shows that I hate. (This is a joke).

Great reaction! I always love watching people react to this movie and Mel Gibson as Riggs. He’s so great in this. Everyone is. The entire series is incredible. Riggs and Murtaugh is a friendship for the ages. Gold standard, as someone said.

As a teenage boy in 1987, I didn’t question the validity of the hand to hand at the end. It was there because it was awesome! Now however….? The scene hasn’t aged particularly well. It’s rather silly. Oh well.
