You'd be surprised what us black folks don;'t do because we feel like we shouldn't. Not just because of what white people would think, but our own community. I remember as a kid I wanted to play hockey because I was really good at skating and I was constantly teased by my cousins about there not being any black NHL players(which I knew wasn't true). Then I remember going to a hockey game with my buddy who played hockey and not seeing any black players on either team and felt like my cousins were right. It's not that race matters, but not everyone wants to be the trailblazer and have all eyes on them for being the "first" anything. I understand why Sam would be scared to take up the mantle, because America can be fickle when it comes to matters like that. (Referring to your argument at 25:25 )

Also, speaking for myself of course, I am hyper-aware when I'm the only black person in a place at a given time. And I'm usually really relieved if there's at least one black person around or happens to show up. I don't approach them, but at least you know one person will have your back if people decide to be racist. Being black is hella uncomfortable sometimes because people can hide their rhetoric and ideas, but I can't hide my skin.

Exactly. That entire scene was related to the therapy scene from episode 2. It was exactly what the counselor was trying to get them to do. Open up to each other. Bucky started to in episode 2. But, Sam left it with Steve and you (Bucky) may never understand. Meaning the additional challenges and considerations Sam as a black man has to have. Bucky's apology is only an acknowledgement of that. He was only seeing how it made him feel and trying to be protective of Steve.

Sam literally touched on one of the reasons why he didn’t keep the shield was him being black during the therapist scene at the police station. And Bucky “not contributing” is debatable. I think he made he it all about his own viewpoint. That Sam was wrong. And perhaps taking a moment to see the full scope of the multiple reasons of why Sam didn’t take up the shield needed to be addressed. Jabby -- "I didn't understand that... " Bucky blamed Sam for the blood on the shield and all that had gone wrong since Sam gave shield up. You could see it in the look as he left the shield with Sam and walked away. Bucky was indeed apologizing because he didn't take Sam's feelings about the ramifications into account that contributed to his reasons for not taking up the shield. If you think that this wasn't part of Sam's reluctance to take up the shield, you would be dead wrong. As usual,--Achara was right, but please also stop calling it a "woke" moment. That totally diminishes the importance of his admission. Bucky was realizing that he had not fully thought about Sam's experience and point of view. It (Sam's ethnicity) didn't enter your mind when you were thinking about Sam's decision because you are not black. There's nothing wrong with that. For a black man in America that is as experienced and as worldly (though Sam likes to joke that he is not) as Sam is, that is ALWAYS something you are aware of. That's just another aspect of the "Truth."

Sam said in the previous episodes, "I did what I thought was right" when he gave uo the shield. Bucky and the audience thought that it was a matter of him not feeling worthy. When Bucky apologised, I think the show is insinuating that the idea of a black man inheriting the shield and the complex nature of it, was at least a part of Sam's decison to give up the shield. Assuming Sam tells Bucky abt his talk with Isaiah, Bucky is realising this, and so is the audience and thus the woke apology. I like the apology, it is smthng that should happen irl but doesn't.

I find it a bit weird that Jaby mentions the story of his friend about Rue and then completely not understanding Bucky's apology... Think about it this way Jaby; Sam’s sister once said something like: “This country doesn’t care about my life (or experience), so why should I care about it’s mascot?”. So Sam feeling reluctance toward becoming that mascot when the country or those who feel suppressed by this country’s history and continued racism and ignorances, is perfectly understandable. Get it?
@anushiyak15223 жыл бұрын
there's an interview of anthony mackie mentioning that sam gave up the shield because he didn't want to be a mascot of a country that has done so much wrong to his people. and the shield with the american flag painted on it, is a big reminder of that. for bucky the shield was about steve not america so when sam put it down, he thought sam was being disloyal to steve but it was for whole other reason which was, once bucky had understood, he apolgized in the 5th episode.

Bucky's apology... Here's what that scene means. Bucky's apology is like when someone says I'm sorry after finding out you had something bad happen to you... not like cause he himself did something wrong...Bucky did nothing wrong. Bucky was simply just showing compassion for NOW understanding what position Steve put Sam in ... They never considered how heavy a burden that it puts on a Black Man who would take on the role of Captain America given the racial issues that still exist in this country. In that moment, he became aware of an issue that neither he or Steve ever had to think about. That's all. 🙂

I have never cared about Walker before but after that sentense scene it just hit me, AND I LOVED HIM AS A CHARACTOR. Because this charactor is a mock in the face to those who fantasize and idolize army or soldiers for more than what they are. I mean yeah the deeds protect the country and the quality requires dicipline and effeciency and strong and sharp and so on, And I truly appreciate that, I do. But people are fantasizing like it's a role of a saint's heart and a roboticly-efficient physics combined, like TF?? You don't win a fight because you are kind or smart or know better, you won cause you followed the order efficiently and the order given was right. That's all a soldier is, a sharp hard gear for the giant machine, and Walker IS what the military ask for, and the bests even. PS. My brother fell for the "advertisement" of the army, got into it, just to find out it's just another job, even a crappier one, I mean, duh, why would it be their first choice if they had better jobs to do? So you know what kind of teenagers most of them were like. Yet STILL the rumors of the army of love and its solders of saints are running. PPS. I'm not talking about the US, but I don't think it will be too much different. PPPS. If you actually know people who choose to join the army out of a good heart dispite all the things they could have, then good for both of you. But if you are bitching or angry or rude in the comment after all these, just don't discuss on the "good person matter", cause we're just NOT, how would know anything about it?

Subconsciously Sam felt the same way of what Isaiah said about a Blackman being Captain America. And Bucky apologizing for not realizing that was the reason Sam gave up the shield.
@HamnatPenaya3 жыл бұрын
But the best part is Sam wanting to prove that wrong. By seeing the hopeful side still and putting in the work to take up the sheild anyway on his terms. And you could feel the pride when his nephew is admiring the shield.

Your on point here. Sam saying over and over that the shield belonged to Steve was acknowledging the image of Cap as the Blond, Blue Eyed, All American symbol. Sam doesn’t fit that image and didn’t feel comfortable trying to assume that image/mantle. The cultural significance of that mantle never even occurred to Steve or Bucky when they “appointed” Sam the next Captain America.

I have to say that John Walker is one of the best well written characters. You can see him literally fold under all the pressure of being Captain America and then to have his best friend die in front of him sending him into dispair. Then get to the court room and he literally speaks facts about what soldiers go through and that the baggage of whatever happened to him during his tour and getting those medals of honor still weighs on him. Now I can’t wait to see him as U.S. Agent

What I understood from the scene with Bucky is that before leaving, Steve discussed with Bucky about what he was about to do : staying in the past and giving Sam the shield. Jaby, I fear you missed a lot of the show from the black experience. Bucky gave Sam a very hard time about not taking on the mantle of Captain America. But he didn’t understand what it means for a black man to take on the mantle of a country that doesn’t always have his back. Being racially profiled early on, the bank, all the comments from Sam and his sister about the country, etc. and for the audience that didn’t get it, the entire scene between Sam and Isaiah spelled it out. And that scene ended up with Isaiah saying no self-respecting black man would want to carry that mantle either. I don’t know, as a black man the part where Bucky apologized for all the shit he gave Sam about the decision to give the shield to the museum felt great.
