the accent when she is home and not when she is away from home is called code switching - i was born and raised in brooklyn and when i went to college and got my professional degree i learned to talk with out the brooklyn accent but i could always revert back when i was around my family if i chose to - harley got her phd so it makes sense that she learned to tone down the accent

this is mostly made up for the show. the only thing they kept was she has two parents and she's from brooklyn. in the comics she has multiple siblings (at least 4, but its been a minute so dont know the exact number); they grew up in an apartment NOT a house; her father wasnt a criminal just a regular blue collar working dude; harley was more put together and a second mom to her siblings cause her parents put the responsiblity on her as the eldest (smartest, she got that phd) to help parent them and help with the homework.
