You asked why mom’s headquarters was run by Sadness rather than Joy. Same thing with dad’s being run by anger. As we get older, our emotions become more complex and mature, evolving into something beyond the base emotion. Sadness, for example, can manifest as empathy and care for others. I think in mom’s care, it shows that she’s empathetic and cares a lot about the feelings of others. As for anger, properly directed anger can be described as drive and passion, making one successful and ambitious. Dad is a driven person, seeking out new opportunities in a new city to improve his families life. He obviously has passion for his family and for everything he does. The more you look into the emotions as presented in this film, the more you realize how accurate and complex it really is.

It's honestly really scary. I mean, there are so many dark memories that could be lurking in the back of our minds, and we just don't remember. The reason Sadness felt the urge to touch the memories is because her instincts knew that was what Riley needed, Joy being a control freak and keeping Sadness from doing her job is basically Riley suppressing her sadness trying to keep up the happy facade. Coercing anything for the sake of appearances is toxic and eventually can do more harm than good. The fact that sadness is seen as a bad thing is culturally ingrained into most of us because being sad is equated with being weak, passive, and negative. The truth is that sadness informs nostalgia and is arguably one of the more magnetic emotions when it comes to people we love. Nobody who claims to care about someone will stand by impassively when a loved one is going through hell. Being weak and asking for help is not a bad thing.

This is the best illustration of depression I've ever seen. First her happy memories become sad, then she loses connection with everything she loves. After that happiness is lost but she's told not to feel sad, so that's gone too. And lastly the expansive numbness as everything just shuts down. It's achingly accurate.

The deep levels of meaning behind so many of the scenes continues to amaze me. Especially Bing Bong's final scene. The whole purpose of an imaginary friend is to have someone who reflects your ideas and interests, and is, always, on your side. Bing Bong realized, in the memory dump, that he was literally, and figuratively, holding Riley back by trying to stay real to her. So he sacrificed himself to allow her to grow. Personally, I don't think that he was completely forgotten, as there would still be memories of him, but after that moment, he would no longer feel real to her. When Joy and Sadness splatted against the window of the tower, I think that Disgust was representing Riley's disgust over her useless anger. It wasn't productive, it just raged. But then she used that anger to create a, literal, breakthrough that allowed her to feel joy and sadness again. It was so well thought out and I keep seeing new analogies every time I watch it.

Nobody listened when Sadness said she didn't know why she was doing this, she just felt COMPELLED to. She hasn't been out of control at any OTHER time, she hasn't been making memories sad just because. It isn't until this point in her life when Sadness starts feeling compelled to change the memories. Riley NEEDED to grieve, and she didn't get that opportunity...even when she was alone by the railing. Once Joy FINALLY gets it through her head that she cannot have complete control over all of Riley's memories -- no one emotion can, or should -- is when Riley has the chance to experience the emotions she's feeling so deeply. I can't wait to see Inside Out 2.

Ive got a little fun fact about Bing Bong for Achara (i'm assuming that Jaby might know this one.) When it came time for Richard Kind (the voice of Bing Bong) to do the scene where he jumps off the rocket so Joy can get to safety he had a little moment. Personally I feel the most important message of the movie, is about not suppressing emotions. All the breakdown of the islands and the control console is only partly caused by what they make her do.. but I'm sure it's mostly because Sadness isn't allowed to do her job. If you've suffered from depression before, you probably know exactly what I'm talking about. The part that gets me the hardest in this movie isn't the sacrifice of Bing Bong.. it's toward the end when Riley finally breaks down and lets her emotions flow.

I think this movie also teaches a lesson to parents that are always telling their kids to just be happy and smile all the time. At the end Riley says "You NEED me to be happy...", and that line has so much power. As a parent of course you don't want your kid to be sad and cry, but you have to acknowledge their feelings and listen so they can understand what they are feeling, too. Sadness is so important in our lives, as someone said here in the comments: empathy and caring derives from sadness, not joy. Telling you kid that is okay to just be sad and cry is a thing that must be normalized. Good thing that nowadays it is more and more common parents being aware of their kids feelings, and listening to them. Awesome reaction! Cheers from Brasil~

One of the things to remember about this movie is when it came out. 2015? So Reilly would be 11 meaning her parents were more than likely late boomer early Gen X. They aren't the best at dealing with their emotions. So the fact that Anger runs dad and Sadness runs mom? tells a story of its own. They both grew up in a very ridged belief that you needed to be a certain way in how you reacted to things and couldn't accept other emotions. This movie will EVERY time make me cry. Its an unbelievable look into the truth of emotions and how each one makes us truly understand life and the things around us. This was so very well done. The reason this impacted me so much, is because Riley was masking her sadness with fake joy. But once she opened up and was honest about her true feelings with her parents; she learned that they missed home too. We all can feel so bad inside because none of us, are ever, honest with ourselves, or with one another person, about how we truly feel. If her parents had exposed their own sadness of moving rather than that fake it-to-you-make-it attitude, Riley would not have felt so alone. She hid her feelings because she thought that everyone else in her family had moved on. It makes you feel broken when you can't get over things as quickly as other people around you purport themselves as doing.

When I watch this film, I was amazed because Pixar is never stop for making everyone cry and I realized every Emotion have important thing for everyone: - Joy seeks happiness and optimistic vision - Sadness seeks empathy and compassion - Anger seeks strong desire for justice - Fear seeks safety and survival instincts - Disgust seeks comfort and rational, sometimes cyanical thinking

Oh man, I can only imagine how emotional Kristen Stephensonpino would've gotten watching this lol. Please make her watch it if she hasn't seen it yet lol. I get it, though. This movie hits me in the feels too.

8:21 There is a theory saying that what sadness is trying to do is to make Riley release her suppression. Because sadness thinks she needs to cry at the moment. If Riley keeps suppressing her sadness and refusing to cry, she will have some sort of dysfunction.

I truly believe Pixar outdid themselves with this. They’ve messed with our emotions before but wow they broke the fourth wall. Inside Out is a masterpiece ❤ this is their greatest achievement. My absolute favourite Pixar film. Wonderful seeing you guys emotionally connect with it.

Joy was suppressing sadness In the beginning and sadness did say "I don't know what's wrong with me I'm having a break down" and I think that's great representation of what happens when you do suppress your emotions. Inside out 2 is out!!!

This movie wrecks me every time. It's my favorite Pixar film, which was hard to do. It's such a beautiful and expressive story. It's great for helping kids understand and process emotions, but even adults benefit from a refresher.

I understand that you guys find sadness irritating but for me it is just right to feel sadness. For me sadness is one of the most important emotions, it can help us accept and adapt. Without sadness, happiness or joy has no meaning.

39:45 it's not just animation, live action is a lot more intense feelings than real life! Mufasas death is heartbreaking, but deaths of certain characters in *LOST* or *The Walking Dead* hit me harder than real life deaths. Movies can take out conflicting feelings and memories and just give you the pure CONCENTRATED stuff that they know will have a much stronger effect. (and it doesnt allow you to use the walls and protection we use in real life)

I remember watching this in the cinema and when Bing Bong vanished the whole room went silent apart from this one kid who kept asking his mum "What's happening to Bing Bong? What's happening to Bing Bong?" but she wouldn't answer him, we were all traumatised!!

people getting annoyed at Sadness in this movie are basically people yelling at the 11 year old girl that she's not allowed to feel sad
@AliceBunny056 ай бұрын
yeah I think the people who aren't quite emotionally mature and introspective are prone to only seeing the surface level portrayal of the personified versions of the emotions without thinking about anything deeper or why they are portrayed how they are. part of the reason sadness cannot easily obey joy is because of dysregulation. when you suppress or repress an emotion, it becomes much more difficult to control it when you do feel it or need to feel it. uncontrollable crying, rage outbursts, depressive states, fear that manifests into crippling anxiety. with the way this story is being told and represented, the only way to really get that across is to show sadness lack of control over herself and that she dosent even know why she's doing what she is doing. in real life, that would be something you hear from the person themselves, but because the emotions are personified, sadness as a character represents it herself.

This is my favorite Pixar film, and it's mostly due to the representation of depression. People think depression is sadness, but it's not - it's when the control board breaks down and you don't feel anything. Having been through it, and come out the other side, I love a good cry every once and a while. I'm fine when I get angry, or disgusted, or scared - it's better than nothing. And being able to feel peace, joy, exhilaration - those are the moments life is lived for!

The lesson that Bing Bong teaches is that in order to grow, you have to let go of childish things and it's the loss of innocence that hits SO HARD.
