UPDATES & AMENDMENTS: -Getsu Fuumaden fans rejoice! A new game is in the works for Steam and Swtich, and I've played the "early access" version of it on PC. Despite the simple gameplay and graphics, my old computer couldn't handle it, but it seems like it will be pretty good!

I really like the fact that Zangetsu from Bloodstained is solely based on Getsu Fuuma. Have you played Bloodstained COTM? It's a great take on an 8-bit linear style Castlevania.

Brilliant review and a great showcase for this hidden gem. I've never heard of this one before so it's nice to see a "new" konami side scroller. I don't know if I'd enjoy this one much though as I think those 3d segments would frustrate me but it's nice to see a alternative to the Castlevania series. It's a shame konami did nothing with the ip afterwards, it looked like it had the potential to spawn a great series of titles.

+Champion 2D Rob Thanks! I'm glad at least a few people haven't heard of Getsu Fuuma Den, since I thought that by now it was pretty well known. At least I know I've mentioned it enough on this channel. ;) TBH, I would have preferred more 2D action and better level design instead of the maze portions, but I'm sure at the time the latter was pretty amazing for the average gamer. And yeah, I can only imagine how much a 16-bit Getsu Fuuma Den would have turned out. Probably would have been a real classic, like Super Castlevania IV.

Here, in Argentina, Famicon (known here as "Familygames") was very successful and a lot of unlicensed games arrived, most of them of course in japanese language. Thanks to that I was able to play this one around 25 years ago, also Wai Wai World 2, and it was awesome at that time. It was during the 16 bits era but my mom couldn't afford to buy me a SNES or a Genesis so my life was a bunch of 8 bits hidden gems. It's so nostalgic to remember how me and my brother had to guess the the uses of the different items and the mechanics in this game and others like Rygar, Captain Tsubasa 2 and some others that we never were able to figure out their names. We used to give them names by ourselves. We used to call it "Blade" instead of Getsu Fuma Den. This game deserves an update.

That's pretty cool--I've heard similar stories from others in South America regarding the Famicom, with a majority of them being sold by "chinitos." I would love for Getsuu Fuuma Den to get an update, sequel, or SOMETHING. Hell, I'd even be hyped if Konami released a pachinko version at this point!

I watched this on my cell phone, inside my 4x4 truck as I waited in the drive-thru of a Dairy queen for a 1,800 calorie meal, with the windows down and your voice blaring through the speakers. East meets west I guess. I thought you should know.

Jimmy Hapa (Import Gaming FTW!) Well, I've already scored Magical Chase at a Hard Off, where do you go from there?
@importgamingftw
@importgamingftw 9 жыл бұрын
+KidShoryuken Oh yeah? Nice find man! I'm sure it cost you a little bit, though. You'll have to show me sometime, maybe on Skype or something. Or in person. But anyway, my challenge is mostly on finding the best deals...basically, I was thinking whoever gets the best haul with a 5000 or 10000 yen cap at three stores, no Hard-Offs (*sticking my tongue out at you*) and only ONE Book-Off (if desired), and of course, no Akihabara (though most shops there are pricey anyway). Winner is voted on by viewers in the comments section. The victor can either request the other do a review, or if you wanted to get really serious and dirty, the loser has to give the winner his games. :0 I'm thinking the former would be better. I have enough games anyway. :P

+schweinefeigel Thanks!! Happy to hear another person hadn't heard of Getsu Fuuma Den until now. I really thought this was going to be one of those episodes where people rolled their eyes. "Getsu Fuuma Den...psshh, everyone already knows about that, man!" ;) I had a good move, but I tell you, everything that could have gone wrong with settling down, did. Apartment, bank, phone, internet, residency card...nothing was smooth. But hey, I've been buying up a lot of amazing games for super cheap, so that's cool! I barely brought any games with me to Japan, but I've built up a pretty nice collection here. Maybe someday I'll combine the two. :)

That must have been a great feeling--I love it when I rediscover the "magic" of games I played as a kid. Great video as always, glad you're back! Getsu Fuuma Den is also one of my favorites for the Famicom. And I wanted to mention the Wai-Wai World games and the Yu-Gi-Oh cards here, but I see you already knew about those. Also, I find it funny how they renamed Ryuukotsuki Ryu Kokki in the English version of the card... They really can't tell the difference between a small and a regular tsu? :)
@importgamingftw
@importgamingftw 9 жыл бұрын
+Kristóf Muzsik Thanks, fellow Fuuma-lover! Yep, included the appearances in most games, but left out Pop'n Music and Oreka Battle on purpose, mostly because it would be hard to include visuals to go with the voice over. I did find a guide book for the latter with pictures of Fuuma, but passed since it cost 450 yen, more than what I'd spend for a mobile game guide book to a game I'll never play and only want to use for a five second clip in a KZbin video! XD And I was wondering if the change from Ryuukotsuki to Ryu Kokki was intentional or not...but I think you're right--they just goofed!

+Stephen Bianchi Thank you for watching and subbing! And that Castlevania XBLA game was freaking AMAZING when it first debuted. Tons of people were always available for coop play online...but I imagine it's pretty worthless now as I imagine no one's really playing. Single player in that game doesn't cut it. If you have a friend or two willing to play, I'd say go for it...but if not, maybe pass on it...also, it was eventually released for the PSN, so maybe that would be a better option? Free online, and I have a hunch that you'll be able to find someone else playing online...once or twice a year, anyway.

Good to see you're back. This game has one of my favourites NES soundtracks. It's awesome, but I've never could get pass the dungeon crawler segment, I will have to try it again one day. I found the game pretty similar to the first Ninja Turtles game in many ways. Same sound FX, similar animations, side scroller and top down stages... did they recycle Getsu Fuuma Den to give us TMNT in the west?

+14catorce Thanks! I hope you'll give it another go someday...I know the dungeon sections can feel tedious, but they're worth trudging through. I'd recommend making a map in conjunction with the compass, though there is a FAQ online that has a basic layout of each one. It's funny you mention that about the first TMNT game, as the original script I made went into exactly what you mention! I just left it out because I was lazy, and I don't have the game with me in Japan ATM. XD But I believe you're pretty much on the right track--TMNT 1 seems to be an upgraded version of the Getsu Fuuma Den engine. Hell, even some of the enemies look alike (frog and fire guys come to mind)!

Welcome back to the wonderful world of KZbins! :) I hadn't heard of this game. And this has become your favorite Japan exclusive Famicom title? Sounds like one I'll have to check out! ;) It looks a bit like a mixture of Castlevania 2, Ninja Gaiden and maybe a little Zelda 2. Great review!

+RPGtourguide Thanks, yeah, it's my favorite JP ONRI NES/Famicom game. ;) I hope you'll check it out--apparently, there's an English patch for the game, not that language is a barrier at all with this game anyway.

+BawesomeBurf If you're a fan of the 2D Castlevania games, then you definitely should try this game out, especially since it's so cheap (free at some place called the "Emulation Store," from what I've been told). The exploration aspect is great, though the dungeon sections haven't aged very well. Much more playable than an RPG from the era, though. I should have said that in my video! XP

Just completed the game, now one of my favorites for the system. I wanna consider it a Vania due to all the references between the two. Easily one of the better platforming-adventure games for the system, staying away from a lot of Simon's Quest's flaws, difficultys very breezy unlike Zelda 2. The presentation is superb. Soundtracks obviously amazing but theres so much creativity in the environments and enemies. I love deep atmosphere in 8bit games and Getsu is one of the best in the category. And its so ambitious with it's different gameplay formats but they're all given an equal amount of polish, an issue the first Golgo 13 had when it attempted similar gameplay variety. Really sad the franchise never caught on, even Undying Moon isn't getting much attention despite its quality. Wonder what that cancelled PS2 game would've been like.

Hey, just found your channel from another video. Really liking it. Please cover more famicom stuff. I just recently got a Retrousb AVS, so I finally have a good way to play famicom carts. My famicom collection is small, but it's slowly growing. :D

Hey there, thanks for checking out the channel! I will cover more Famicom stuff, sure, but in the meantime, definitely hit up Game Dave for his Famicorner stuff. If I had an AVS like you, I would do a lot of FC games...super jealous, ha ha. I don't have an RGB modded Famicom, so I am kind of holding off on Famicom until I find a solution, but maybe in a couple of months I'll talk about a special Famicom game. MAYBE. Hope you build a glorious, multicolored mountain of Famicom carts!

I finally played the unofficial fan translation of this game last night, and its fantastic! I ended up in one of those 3d sections without the lantern - now that I know about it, I'm going to go back and search for it. @12.54 I was wondering about these strange floating enemies. A nod to metroid? Or are they some kind of demon from Japanese folklore? This game is steeped in amazing lore, just like the goemon series. A fantastic find and a great video Jimmy!

I’ve never played that game before. But when I watched the trailer for the next Getsu Fuma Den game for modern consoles, it looks interesting and this video really helps. I’d like to try the modern console one once it’s released. It looks like good try that game out and experience the history behind it. Also, is it just me or was Konami fond of maze-puzzle games during the Famicom days? I’m familiar with The Goonies and King Kong 2 and they look pretty difficult to complete unless you have a guide.

I loved playing as Fuuma in Harmony of Despair Such an overlooked game that. Might try and get a copy of Getsu Fuuma Den seeing as I can play it on my Retron. Never realised he was one of the characters in Jikkou Power Pro Wrestling 96 Max Voltage. I have a copy of that but have barely played it because every time I do I get thoroughly destroyed. As i seem to with most Japanese Wrestling games from then. Good to see a new video from you.

+Mellow Gaming I have the same problem with wrestling games from the era. +Nostalgic Dan Thanks Dan, I really appreciate it! I'm surprised a Japanese games nut like you hadn't heard of Getsu Fuuma Den yet, so I'm glad you found out about it finally. It's a really great game--definitely ambitious, and at the time of its release, I can only imagine how realistic the dungeon sections must have seemed...though they haven't aged very well. And I guess you, me, and Miketendo are a part of the "old enough to react to a California Raisins reference" crowd, for better or worse. ;)

Is it also possible that Fuma a recruitable character in Suikoden 1 is based on Getsu Fuuma as well? In Suikoden 1, Fuma has a Shuriken weapon, no one really knows his backstory and he shares Fuuma's name if missing an extra "u". I found out when I was watching a Walkthrough on Suikoden 1.

The odd thing is that Getsu Fuuma Den is particularly forgiving, far more than what you'd expect... And yet never got a chance to come out in the NES. hopefully the bonus included in the Early Access will wind up receiving an official translation down the road.

I'd love to try it out sometime, though, if I come across it! And ha ha, yeah, I thought about changing the series name to something else..."Japan Gaming FTW," "Japanese Import Gaming FTW," "Export Gaming FTW" (not really that last one ;D)...but I think the original name will stick. Plus, we all know that "import game" is code for "Japanese game" anyway, right? :)
