Wow, 90 variations of just the chain stitch only! I haven't embroidered in such a long time so I would almost call myself a beginner. I know many of the basic stitches so this will be interesting to get to. I will be starting with your two stitch samplers first. I want to do a stitch sampler book so I can do some serious practice on different stitches. Thank you for sharing this. I have learned so much already from the tips in your videos.

I do all sorts of creative works crochet, draw, paint, sew, mold, etc. I really up until watching your videos recently didn't think embroidery was done anymore. I saw the hoops at the store and wondered why they would still be sold LOL I read all about the proper ladies who embroidered to pass the time in stories. My husband bought some embroidery floss a few years ago to make a bracelet and I said hold on to the leftovers I'll do something with it, well the day has come! I'm going to try embroidery! This was a fantastic start for me, Gonna have to watch hours of content before I feel confident but I'm excited to try it!

i love these vids and Charlie is wonderful!! i've been cross stitching for around 20 years. DMC winds their thread in a row. imaging all 6 pieces in a line and then spinning them together. this technique will work very well if you take 2 or more pieces that are "next" to each other. that doesn't all ways happen and you'll get knots. some DMC, for some reason will just want to knot more than others. i don't know why. if while sewing your thread gets too twisted and will knot. i will hold up my work and let the needle dangle. all the extra tension will spin out until the needles stops spinning. poof!! all better!

I use the same hoops for my cross-stitch projects. I have hand-eye coordination issues that make threading needles and tying knots more difficult, so I do use a needle threader and tie my knots like I'm tying a French knot. I haven't wandered into the realm of actual embroidery at this point, but I do cross-stitch and have recently delved into the world of sashiko. I find hand stitching to be a meditative process.

Have you ever tried the quilters knot? It is so much easier to do especially for those new to making knots at the end of their thread.

You know, someone showed me that knot in college, and it looked pretty handy! But my mom taught me this version when I was maybe six, so it's pretty ingrained in my fingers.

I had never heard of the interlocking (U) hoops before and having to readjust the fabric every 5-10 min was frustrating to me so I got a set and ya'll. I am never going to back to using any other type of hoop for working my embroidery. The fabric DOES NOT MOVE! once you've tightened the hoop enough it stays put. I am so happy with these and they weren't all that expensive either. 100000/10 would recommend to anyone who embroiders.

And I couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong. Very frustrating. I can’t wait to try it myself. I really like the knot trick also. Do you have any suggestions on using a stand hope (table hoop)? Not sure what’s it called. I have read that they can be easier on your hands. Thank you again.

Welcome! I actually don't use a table stand to embroider except when I'm trying to film it so I need both hands free. A lot of people love them, but I'm always curled up on the couch or a comfy chair when I stitch, so it just hasn't been something I've gotten into!

I actually don't have preferred brands for hoops, frames, or scissors... for hoops I usually just buy on Amazon, and I'm paying attention more to the material than the brand - you want hoops made of birch rather than bamboo for better quality. When I do canvas framing, I get bar stretchers at Blick - not necessarily because they have the best ones (although they are really good) but because they offer every single size sold separately so I can build any size of frame I want. For snips I like to buy cute ones, so I usually just dig around on Etsy to find styles I like!

What are some good brands for embroidery hoops? It's hard to tell online if the hoops have u shape you recommend.

My personal favorite plastic hoops came in a multi-pack of 6 brightly colored ones - I have found what looks to be the same package from three different brands: Similane, Caydo, and Big Otters. To find hoops with that inner hump, look for ones called labeled "Sure grip" but not "Super Grip." I've also noticed that all the properly gripping plastic hoops tend to have white inner rings and colored outer rings, while the ones with the L-shape grip that doesn't work are usually all the same color. Hope that helps!

I am so sorry for everything I'm about to say(about me because I'm exactly very new to embroidery,but not new to sewing) here I go: 1) I'm using regular sewing thread cause I'm cheap,and yes I'm annoyed too that I'm making this process more difficult than need-be! (I've practiced enough to feel like quadrupling the thread at this point has the same-ish consistency of a three-strand of embroidery thread),and here I am at this video cause I know I need help. My project is making patches for a beloved family before this Christmas,and I feel like I'm already behind with "a patch a month",cause I know better! 2) I'm using my old work pants as the main fabric because I figured something sturdy for a sew-on-only patch material should suffice. 3) I didn't understand tension well enough,but realized something has gone awry,so I'm currently heating up my glue gun in hopes that binding the lucky embroidery hoop may help,as I've seen in other videos,this may help with the tension. (P.s. reason why I'm using thread is cause I can't imagine finding a trove of someone's old hobby's-worth of gold at the thrift,and...I just have so many colored threads that may never come to use,so I'm navigating this project with what I have cause I'm a frugal bitch). 4) I actually drew the image beforehand,but I only sketched the general background color sections cause I planned on free-handing the wording afterwards....I imagine this is not proper,but again-here I am. 5) even after pulling the fabric taught,I started to worry that it'll bounce back and all the stitching I ever did will just be loosey-goosey,and this is the point where I realized I may be out of my expertise! I don't know what I don't know,and this is why this first patch was meant to be a practice round! Again,I apologize for this horrible span of events in my endeavor to "figure it out" with regular thread in the first place,but I figured I was off to a shit start with using regular sewing thread in the first place;I am very stubborn afterall,but I love to learn,afterall! Thank you for this video,I only commented because I wanted to express how silly a person can be when they may first start out. (You're not alone,afterall!) This video is actually very amazing for a first-time embroidery video,but one thing I will add is this....I ABSOLUTELY do not trust myself with tying off thread at all,I've learned to weave in the tail on both ends,whether I tie off at all or not,I just weave the tail into my work,and it has always felt more secure than double-triple-quadrupuling the knitting because it never looks professional,and I just-UGH-as a person,I really hate starting,and ending projects....and with any form of thread working,I just hate it. Sewing,knitting(I still suck at crochet),and still with embroidery,I can only rely on weaving the front and back tails into the fabric if I can,and it's always "clean" work for me,anyway. This is a beginner video and I am adding my few cents to a realm I have ZERO clue about. Don't be like me by starting off with the wrong material,and you'll be okay,lol.

First of all, there is no need to apologize for sharing - I love hearing from you! Second of all, I absolutely love that you were resourceful with the supplies you already had on hand - just because you want to try something new doesn't mean you have to run out immediately and buy tons of stuff! Recycling fabric is wonderful for embroidery and something I continue to do regardless of how long I've been at it, and stitching with sewing thread instead of floss - while yes, it will give you a different look and feel - is completely okay and sometimes even a great creative choice! Keep up the awesome work and happy stitching!

Canvas would be my third choice after cotton and linen. My favorite thing to sew on is cotton twill!
