I know some people have opinions on Shawn and his views on video games or other markets. I brought him on to provide a differing viewpoint on the market and everything taking place. It is very easy to be stuck in a vacuum and only listen to opinions that agree with what you already think/believe. Hopefully, even if you don’t fully agree with what is being said today, you still listen to what is being said and understand the risks of a speculative, euphoric market such as graded video games.

You should be given an award for being the most open minded KZbinr who's currently spending within this market. Shawn's channel is a well of knowledge, and upon looking into who was fueling this market, I saw a KZbinr or two who seemed no more than a foolish rich bitch who knew zero about investing. I'm sure [perhaps] there's a percentage in yourself that's gritting your teeth, thinking "stop saying it's gonna burn to the ground, give it time," whereas others are going "shutup! It's. Here. To. STay!! You seem not blindly stubborn to the chaotic reality of investing. No doubt some others are blindly stubborn. Even if this market depreciates (not hits zero, but also not a simple retrace, where the market would just be finding itself) you'll be the one who's not a closed minded fool freak. Your channel was a refreshing find, considering the first impression received due to the prior mentioned guys. Btw, I'll sell you my CIB nes back to the future. Haha, kidding, that's a no-demand. THERES SOMETHING ABOUT CARTS THOUGH. Sold dozens of '95 jaguar cib games last year for hundreds a piece, and even a broken jagcd peripheral console for 450 usd. Received a message LITERALLY saying "oh, you sold it? Got any other video games?" ..like a drug. Because it is. Glad to see you collect tcg btw. Best to you on the channel, my friend. And your sealed product acquiring as well.

1:01:19 There are also guys like me, that are older (same age as Shawn) that discovered the videogames and immediately loved it (like many others). But for a bunch of us, this is a passion that we use as a distraction, to relieve stress from our successful life. I have been playing and collecting since I am 6 (I would never resell any game or any system at the beginning). Because I have a busy life and responsibilities, my time is limited. At 45 now, you can imagine that I have been collecting a lot of stuff. My collection has more than 4000 games, over 100 systems. I have almost nothing loose. Worse case it's CIB but at least 25% of my items are new and sealed... Nobody knows about my collection. Even among people that know me, very little people know about my collection... Being educated, I follow what is going on in the secondary market and if that was never a goal, the amounts are so crazy that I am starting to think about selling my collection that nobody knows about. I am not the only one. Not all of us feel the need to have a KZbin channel, it doesn't mean we don't exist and will not compete with the people who fell for what is basically a pyramidal scam (the KZbinr being the guy at the top of the pyramid). And we will make a killer in term of money... I have tons of story like Shawn... I bought a sealed copy of Mario Party 2 for $1 in 2006 (clearance bin). Still have it sealed... I bought 10 sealed Neo Geo games for $220 around 2008 or 2009, etc. We were there before the hype. A lot of the newcomers are going to have bad surprises... And the group of unknown collectors, like me, is nothing compare to the wholesalers that have warehouses full of sealed videogames around the world... This is why I used with confidence the term "pyramid scheme". If you think about it, that's all it is... You add emotions, and people get blind. Like with love, it's always the people around you that see weeks or months in advance that your love story is over...

Thanks for the collab video. I've also been watching content from Reserved Investments channel. I know people roll their eyes when I say this sector will indeed be dropping by 50-70%+ in next few years, but it will happen. Best to have good amount of cash on hand to take advantage of the carnage, have a shopping list in hand and know what you want and the price point you are willing to spend (same with stocks really keep a low ball limit order in place to take advantage of the hiccups) Also, we need population reports damnit! Fully agree, and this is main reason why I have yet to grade a single game yet. I just won't until full transparency is given. I know I am costing myself $$$ in the short term in this raging bull but oh well. Also I am a few years *older* than Shawn ha ha ha. Watch out, there are a good amount of us Gen X-ers in video game collecting. We are below the radar but definitely been in the mix for quite a while. I've been collecting for over 20 years and would feel embarrassed to admit how many games I got at this point LOL. Shawn is also right that everybody should be more conservative with their wealth building. Get rich quick schemes almost always crash & burn before you actually get rich. Fund a 401(k) and Roth and also taxable account with dividend aristocrats before even thinking about speculating on graded games or pokemon cards or comics or whatever. Save up down payment for house as that is a true wealth builder if you buy in popular areas. The basics of wealth building are the same today as they were a generation ago. Let that be your foundation and then take the income everything is throwing off and start speculating a bit on games, coins, crypto, or whatever strikes your fancy. That is what I did, and I am very *glad* I did!

Holy shit , I knew Shawn was the real deal from the videos he makes on his channel but when he reeled off the cases of unsold games he got cheap back in the day I was kinda stunned. And then doubly stunned when he said he’s not that motivated to liquidate it ASAP while the market is white hot. Then again I have a lot of games I could sell and get great returns on for short term holds but I can understand the lack of overwhelming enthusiasm to list every damn double I have right freakin now. For me each sale that I push to make happen feels like it’s own narrative with many steps involved. I can see why financial investments are attractive. They are so much easier to liquidate than collectibles. One truth I can never seem to escape is that getting an excellent return on most of ones item being sold takes time and patience. It’s hard to sell a lot quickly AND get an excellent return. There are certain market conditions that can allow that to happen but they’re rare. More often than not if you want to sell an store collection in one hit like when moving overseas then it’s near impossible to get buyers without a bulk discount to grease the wheels

I feel it is hard to paint an entire market with a single brush. Real estate, stocks, coins, videogames, comics, coins aren't good or bad. There are good buys and bad buys in all these markets. You need to buy the right item at the right price and you can do that in all these markets. That being said you can also buy the wrong item in any of those markets. Buying the wrong piece of real estate will cost you much more than buying the wrong video game.
@sethinlow40383 жыл бұрын
Great video! Thank you!! But if I’m hearing this correctly…you think there could be a couple hundred copies of a game sealed and graded? I know that video games still needed to be widely adopted as an asset class, but I’m coming from the sports card world. A pop report of 200 is astonishing low. I totally agree with market manipulation running rampant in collectibles. However, if legitimately some old console sealed games only have a pop of a couple hundred then there actually super undervalued despite the craze.
@GetTheGreg3 жыл бұрын
For populations, MANY vintage video games are going to have populations in the 50-100, or the 100-500. Compared to other hobbies, yes, I do believe the finite supply will be quite low on most sealed *vintage* games. There are of course many outliers and objections to this, and generally speaking, the newer you go, the higher the pop counts will be!

Nice video. I Started in the video game collecting in 2009. For me it was not about making money. I just wanted to have a physical connection to the games I loved and played. This shifted to, well I can now try to buy a whole lot of games, they are cheap and awesome to have a big library. To, what stuff might be a good investment for the future (in terms of new releases) The fomo is high when you see how prices went. And trying to find that next big ticked item will be like chasing a dream. I sold almost of of my collection when I noticed it was mainly taking up space. I could made much much more money if I waited a while. In the end of the day I could not have for seen how much some items increased in price. And some I thought were good investments did not do much or are going for less now. The companies now very well that people like to collect these things. They know we have an emotional connection with them. And they will do their best to sell you as much stuff as possible. Nintendo is transforming into an ip company. Look at Disney and see where the company is going. Look at the amount of collectable stuff that company produces. And i can guarantee you, most collectables will not make you rich. Because there will be more and more of them. 1000 limited edition statue. Cool but next month there will be a new 1000 statue and a new one after that. There will be more stuff than there are buyers. Will you be able to make money out or this? Sure. You might double or triple your money on good purchases. Will you need to wait 10 years for it to happen. I don't think so. For me I just stick at buying things I like. Have it on display, and it after some years and I want to let it go and it sells for more or even that nice. That way I had a free cool thing to look at. But I also keep in mind I may not get back what I paid.

2017 was the year that started the biggest asset bubble in history. The rise of Bitcoin was the initial catalyst. Ever since late last year, however, we've been in full mania mode. We're now at the point where charlatans like Logan Paul and Gary Vee have become the faces of finance, stocks of unprofitable companies are being memed and exploding in value, and people are unironically buying literal JPGs for millions of dollars. It's absolutely insane.
@blitzkrieg11743 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say that the graded video games market is in a bull market, I'd say it's more speculative and hype driven. They people selling into this speculative/hype driven market are the real winners, it's not the wealthy speculators doing the buying at these auctions.
@blitzkrieg11743 жыл бұрын
Shawn's right, the graded video game market does need more organic demand to really take off which he mentions at 28:48. With the way WATA Games has exposed their hand so fast and so quick it has tarnished this particular market because GREED is getting in the way of rational thinking and everybody can see it. Hopefully CGC can fix this when they get involved. The graded video games market will have to crash by 99% and the reset button has to be hit in order for graded video games to have that organic demand. Population reports alone will not be enough to convince the public at this point because who's going to believe them? WATA Games and Heritage Auctions have messed things up and people know that a 9.8 WATA Super Mario 64 clearly isn't worth $1.5 million! That's ridiculous when WE know there are many copies out there and the game isn't rare. Honus Wagner baseball cards are more rare than any Super Mario 64 video game.
@GetTheGreg3 жыл бұрын
That's where I want people to express caution, as well. It's tough when someone comes to me and is looking to purchase a graded game and I basically have to tell them that they will have to bid either a record price for it, or damn near close if they actually want to win the item. The demand right now is insane so they market can support it, but no guarantees we still have this level of hype and demand in 1 year, 2 years, or 5 years!
@clrodrick3 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. Things will be falling quite a lot in shocking manner before everything resets in a year or 3
@blitzkrieg11743 жыл бұрын
@@GetTheGreg The demand is definitely there for a tiny group of people willing to speculate by buying such high priced video games. I still believe a major correction needs to occur before trust can be established in the graded video game market, as well as population reports. Kudos to the sellers who are selling into this market as they should take profits when they can. Pondering about population reports and why WATA Games hasn't released one is because they want to see which games haven't come in and gotten graded. They are using that population report in reverse order/thinking. That gives WATA Games a leg up on all the other collectors so they can snatch up and buy the games which haven't come in, the hidden gems if you will. Over time that's how WATA Games will know which games are truly rare and if they'll find a game which nearly doesn't exist in sealed form other than the 1000's of Mario's and Zelda's that have come in and been graded.

Let me get this straight Honus Wagner.. Mickey mantle.. action comics... very relevant and extremely valuble.! Never saw a down tick. But Zelda won’t be relevent. Let me live my whole life and wait for Zelda to become irrelevant and never own one... good advice idiot. He’s pretty much saying if Zelda drops in 1000 years... He can go down in history as being right about the bubble bursting eventually maybe in 100 decades.

Wow the first video I see riddled with ads just so happens to be the first video with reserved investments... Dude cut the ads. It’s every 5 mins!! Your video has over 20 advertisements
@GetTheGreg3 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I actually went in to go see as I was surprised to hear that, but you're right. For some reason (and this must be a thing with long videos...?) The pre-set ads were ridiculous. Sometimes in 3 minute intervals. So yea, I cut it way down, because obviously haha. That should make for a much better viewing experience 🤝

"ill be the first to admit I was wrong about the graded video game market" - Sean (is what he should have said) instead he doubles down.. and says "over the long term I will be right" what does that even mean? these items will eventually go down? of course. nothing goes up and up forever..

At this point in time, what *isn't* in a bull market haha? Time to scoop up some crypto, I guess!? It's honestly hard to see "value" unless you have a strong conviction with your choices.

True you right but there is a lot of games right now that will be valuable in 5 to 10 years as that generation grows up, gears of war, assasians creed etc, thankfully crypto has hyper cycles so easier yo get into a bear run.

Yo Greg, friendly advise for your next interview: Shut the fuck up. ;) Great video, though. I liked the part about Rudy’s background. Many people like to imitate successful people’s current actions, when they should rather study what that successful person did when he/she was in the position they are currently in.

@@boxwi Exactly right. He's even delineated the difference between short-term holds, intermediate holds and long-term holds.
