I managed to crack 3000km with a similar design, but it really pushes the a-4 near to the limit. 5000km is just a completely different challenge altogether. The secret appears to be the RD-101 without radically redesigning the rocket. The larger thrust at launch meant I could finally fit another stage in-between the aerobee and the lifter, pushing that little bit further. It felt good to finally get it after so much head scratching.

you saved me from days trying to figure out how to go 5000km I tried nearly everything A4 XLR41 NAA75-110 even XLR11 XLR 10 Venonique and tons of areojets and arobee aj10 for upper stages but all i took was to get my design that went barely 3000km replacing NAA75 with RD-101 adding a veronique and 2 stages of aj10 and it went 5500km on the first try thank you for saving me

There's an option in MJ to prevent the throttle cut off. It's in the MJ's settings menu and marked as RO feature.

At about 11 minutes in, you use range safety on a V2 whose engine failed. Could you save some money by aborting and recovering the science payload? That rocket happened; Bumper 5 in 1949 used a WAC Corporal riding on a V2. This was the first two-stage liquid fuelled rocket.

Range Safety is part of the avionics which is deployed with the payload. I think I would have blown up the payload while the booster plummets. Perhaps putting the avionics in the nose cone wasn't the best plan.

Technically yes but practically no. Once tooled, many of the parts are so cheap that it isn't worth the 30-60s wait for it to parachute to the ground. Add up a few dozen of those and you might have a few thousand more in the bank, but it will have cost you half an hour of staring at the screen instead of progressing.

Hi Mike, great video. I have a question: Is it possible to do the same mission without using Kos? I have tried to do it and it is very difficult to manually control the ignition of the second stage, it always fails by dynamic pressure. Thank You!

At that point, kOS is doing very little. The flight is being controlled by MechJeb, and the staging by Smart Parts. You definitely don't need kOS, but I would definitely use MechJeb and not do it manually.

I'm getting a bit sick of stock and not good at self-motivating my own missions (like to have contracts to work towards). What mods would people suggest as a good starting point?

It all depends on what you're looking for. If you want to change how career mode works there's contract packs like Career Evolution and SETI which replace the stock contracts. You can shake up the tech tree with something like Unkerballed Start which starts with probes and jets instead of crewed space flight. I'm also a fan of the Strategia mod which overwrites the Admin building adding a new layer to shake up careers. If you want to make the game harder, there's Kerbalism which gives you a lot more to think about. You can also up the scale of the solar system with JNSQ or go all the way with RO/RP-1 like the videos here. We're only scratching the surface here.

@@MikeAben great, something to think about, thanks. I've had some mods in the past (basics like MechJeb, Ferram) but just getting back into Kerbal on PC. I've just unlocked the whole tech tree in career but then lost interest as there is not much point in gathering additional science after that.

I'm not sure, but the contract warns you not to the stock downrange distance that you get from the mission report. I would assume the correct way would to measure along the arc along the surface joining the KSC to the point directly below the vessel. Maybe stock just calculates the straight line distance between the two points, which would be smaller. I've not thought to compare the two numbers.
