Today on SF Customs
Recently I purchased a few CR80's of a good friend which will be restored. In this episode I get one of the bikes running, showing how to look over a bike yourself in order to fire it up if it's been sitting around of a long period of time.

Used to have an 84 cr80 with a blue seat , Man I miss that bike ! Remember the first few times I rode it , I kicked in the power band coming off gravel onto pavement ! She flipped and ripped the back fender off clean , Was goin around like uncle Ronnie mac for a few months hahaha

I've got that model of bike. Had it since I was a boy. Dad chucked a larger piston in mine. It's hard to match red plastic aftermarket colors. Never had the side plate. Think I'll restore mine. Thanks for the inspiration.

Off the shelf parts yeah good luck with that for some bikes, I managed to fix a rare competitor for that CR80 a KTM 80 Motocrosser rare even back in the day and the biggest problem it had was no spark. The CDI unit had failed and it was a Motoplat made in Sain, Now Motoplat went belly up back in from memory 1991 so I had to spend hours digging out the encapsulating resin to finally get to test all the compnents at board level including alll the Board traces which were not surprisingly OK being resin encapsulated but can be damaged removing the Resin. Once I had acertained what component had failed I then looked up th part number and sourced a compatable component once fixed before I rencapsulated it I tetsed it and all was Good so Fresh Resin to seal and vibration proof the unit and reassemble and then a few kicks later it ran once more. There is nothing that cannot be fixed or a replacement modified or sourced to suit, Just sometimes some things can become economically unfeasable but never impossible and that is when these Bikes Cars or whatever become parts donors to bring another project back to life.

Good video. I had the same 1980 CR80 as a young teen. I found getting a reasonable one very hard to do. I settled for the four stroke, and found a tidy running 1980 XR80 for $600 about 3 years ago. I have finished restoring most the parts. I have had to use Chinese after market chrome rims and spokes. I will keep the rusty Japanese Araya rims to be re chromed maybe in future. I have polished my engine case and valve cover to a chrome like finish. I know what you mean by trying to get good OEM parts. A bloke on eBay was asking over $600 USD plus postage for a genuine unused plastic side cover. No way. I have a KZbin video on my channel of how I made a Maier one look like genuine Honda. Looking forward to seeing this little Honda restored.

Currently trying to get a 1999 cr80 back to running condition. No compression, guy said he ran it with no coolant and blew it up. Damn thing won’t even try to start! Can’t find any videos or decent forums let alone engine parts… but maybe one day.

That year was a game changer in the mx game! Sounds like it definitely needs to be completely stripped and assessed. Get yourself a workshop manual, Haynes do great manuals definitely chase one up! Good luck!

No worries mate. Well hopefully you continue the build to help us guys out who don’t have the experience and knowledge. I need to try and get on some sort of forum or fb page to help source parts…. They are expensive for these bikes. Thanks mate 👍🏼
