To be honest, Chicago might be safer than the Dump. The Dump on release was just insane. First as a Stalker you had to push your way out of Cordon, which Bandits would be all over the bridge and camping the railroad tracks, and then having to do a massive run through Dark Valley popping energy drinks nonstop to get to the entrance on the Stalker side of the Dump and then hoping to get some copper wire before 5 or 6 Bandits show up to give you a lead enema.

If you decide to play this KNOW and I mean KNOW that this game will be a pain in the ass and lots of grinding and mean LOTS just for your gun or armor but just know also just invite a friend to play with at the start and will be more fun and later on the game it will be easy to get money just follow the story line and if not do some side quest they some times give quest rewards that are guns or armor so good luck stalker/bandit
