I thoroughly enjoyed the series, Nick. As so many others have said, I wish there was more! Anyone who enjoyed this may also like the ongoing Sampson Boat Co. series. A British boatbuilder and sailor is restoring a wooden pilot cutter - like yacht on the west coast of the USA. With over 50 videos already shot and probably 50 more to go, It'll keep everyone binging for a while!

Thank you for posting this. I love wood boats but don't have the time at home just yet to start a project like yours. I have to settle on my fiberglass boats for now. Nick, I absolutely loved the series - I had intended to string it out for Saturday mornings by the fireplace throughout the bitter Canadian winter, but, alas! I couldn't keep myself from binge-watching the whole thing whilst laid up with a cold these past two days. Now I have nothing better to do with my Saturday mornings than retreat to my workshop and attend to my own boat work.

Hi Nick, Just a note to add my further thanks to you for re-floating this series. It’s true you are a natural in front of the camera and your genuine enthusiasm comes over, adding to the enjoyment of the viewer. I know I floated this idea previously but having seen all the programs I’m sure there’s room for at least one more series on our screens? Finances and motivation aside, there is still a wealth of material to be covered apart from revisiting subjects and people from the first series, and engines, loads of engines!

Great series, Nick! I would love to have your wood working skills. As a former owner of a Sharpie, I wonder if that last bit of oak spline sticking up those few millimeters might be uncomfortable to sit on. It is very pretty, but wouldn't a flush deck be preferable during a pounding race? Love Rudolph. My Sharpie in Brazil was named Kiki. Thanks for everything you do!

Thank you so much for this series, which I binged-watched over the last two days and which I will re-watch now and then. :) I really liked the combination of you introducing all kinds of traditional boating and you restoring a traditional boat. Being a yachtsman myself, I learned many new things about traditional boats as well as of boat building. I really loved looking at your craftsmanship and getting inspired. I really would like to do my own boatbuilding, as well. Unfortunately, I have neither a workshop nor the time nor do I live near shipable waters. But I know that I will be owning my own yacht in a couple of years and even if it won't be a traditional wooden boat, I am looking forward to doing work on all the elements of a boat: hull, rigging, engine, electricity, and I don't know what. Thanks a lot again! :) And perhaps, I don't know yet, in my retirement, I could imagine sailing a traditional dinghy made from wood across the Dutch channels and lakes.

Marvellous series Sir. I never had sky so missed this on Discovery channel back then. You have heaps of subscribers now, waiting for further content, so dig out that old Vhs video recorder (Lima Oscar Lima) and let us see some more of your personable and informed narrative on the subject of boats, sailing, and maritime propulsion. How is that seagull engine for example?, did the new engine in the motor boat perform as expected?, what did you do with the replanked trawler? ...... So much still yet to do and record. Here's hoping, and kind regards.

You got to be a topman. You were young, energetic, probably more skilled, and you had a cameraman and a producer. Most of the students or passengers presumably didn't get the opportunity. As always, probably the cameraman was doing more difficult climbing than you were. By the way, it's a bit late, but I recommend ear plugs for protection from snorers. I think I've watched all the videos in the series, but I'm still unlikely to restore a wooden boat. I've just bought an inflatable, which I'm planning to paddle while my wife rows - that way we can face each other. I've owned a theoretically sea capable rotomolded row boat called a virus yole, and a couple of sit on top kayaks. The rowboat was interesting but tippy, and I was too tall for tandem use of it. The sit on top kayaks were fun for exploring flooded creeks upstream from the man made lakes which are the only water around here.

Life has taught me that those who snore loudest and most also fall asleep quickest and easiest. I use earplugs at all times!

Hi Nick. Excellent series and thanks for taking the time to put them all up on KZbin, we have really enjoyed watching them. So what happened to the Sharpy, is it still on the water, did it find its way into one of the few Sharpy fleets still sailing?
@seanicky7 жыл бұрын
Hi Foxwells, we kept the Sharpie, and it is on its trailer in the drive. We have taken it by road as far as Falmouth and explored the harbours there, and Plymouth too. In Chichester we have camped on board, and now use it to take the children to the beach. A few years ago we competed in the Sharpie Nationals at Bosham and came half way up the fleet of 30. That was mainly because it was blowing thirty knots and we had a small jib and could reef the main. It is still on the paintwork we did for the series, although last year it did have a coat on the bottom. The decks have had a couple of coats of varnish every few years. Glad to hear you enjoyed the series, rgds, Nick.
@SailingwiththeFoxwellFamily7 жыл бұрын
Hi Nick, thats good to hear... we first came across some Sharpys on the east coast some where, I had a good old natter with the owner of one of the boats thinking at the time what a lovely design it was. However I'm one of those people that love the look of many old boats but the time pressures of modern life just push me away from them. Your a natural in front of the camera, in this day and age where any one can make a film, take us for example!!! you should have a go. I'm sure we wouldn't be the only ones interested in seeing the things that your currently working on and its surprisingly good fun to do.
