OMG you are opening it!? So I came across my little carrying case with my well used ERTL models. I started browsing Ebay and bought a model of Stepney new in the box. I have no intention of opening it, but I love Stepney and never had an ERTL model of him(I did have a wooden one and a faceless OO Scale model of the real one. But at any rate, then I just started finding all the models I never had and bought gently used sets to fill out the open collection. I just got an open Gordon, James, and a Stepney that I can actually touch lol for like $12. Now I want to pick up NOS sealed ones to display or whatever. The VHS bug bit me too, I spent $100 on two sealed VHS tapes, one of which was an old Strand VCI tape that is atleast 30 years old. I am addicted, I must be stopped

Ertl to me was the cool merchandise, I never really had many of those ones, well because by the time I got into Thomas (2004?) they were replaced by Take along(while not as cool but they still were great, the tender engines had molded in fireboxes for crying out loud), but man Thomas the tank engine is great, I can still go back and enjoy everything about at least the first 7 seasons. Now where was I going aside from letting the train nerd in me outside, oh yeah Thomas is cool.

Ertl is probably the best Thomas range to collect because they made basically every named character from season one to seven the show and a couple book only characters one thing is I would say just pick a couple key characters if you want maybe like main 7 engines with a some important secondary road vehicles and rolling stock characters along with the fat controller himself

As a guy who loves final destination, persona 3, the moody blues, among many others, the ip that dominates my room, Is Thomas the tank engine, (the railway series) and transformers. I cant say both are valid, but the cgi stuff is super Wholesome. Thomas as a franchise is just as abused as transformers. Well.. worse. Tf makes money and has alot for diff people. Thomas is now dangerous because its brainless, and transformers can be wholesome and gritty, and progressive and spiritual, and a successfully evasive series in terms of interpretation, but also consistantly able to be strong enough to trhive on its own merit without comparison to other series before. Maybe a little too reliant on self referential motifs, but Transformers i take to be a metaphor for extremism and humanism, and the dichotomy of the two party system. So why do I love Thomas the tank engine too? Because most who do see this hopefully will be Transformers fans, So the author wrote a story for his son, and hand carved a wooden train, which became Thomas. The books werent published for year because of a paper shortage because of a little thing called, World War 2. Thomas has nearly reached 80 year anniversary. Around the time The Reverend Wilbert Awdry finally took his wifes advice and had them published, the british railways were replacing heritage steam engines, even those preserved in the iconography of british culture, with diesels and diesle electric engines. The books began to reflect this in the steam engines dealing with their own prejudices in their eternally immature way. The trains don't age really. Some just do the same job everyday, which can be horrifically stale to imagine beibg in those engines shoes, but i take it as a duty to the people who rely on public transportation. Anyway, some characters are eternally petulant and some are inherently egalitarian and embrace the new driving types to the island. The story takes place on an island inbetweeen england and the isle on man. The author and his brother actually assimilated both languages to make a new one, to give real names ro real places, some he didnt even feature in books. Anyway this man, really cared. One of my formative events i believe, was hearing one such anecdote. The Reverends son said the Toby was his favorite, because that origin story was based on a real life vacation the family had. But the Reverend refused to issue any such clarity. He said, "my engines are a family. And in a famuly you don't play favorites." That was one of those moments that made me think "this man. This man...." an undefined idolatry. This unrecognised genius! Im one of those punters who thinks they are an author. One day i could be. But one reasin is because the Reverend, while never cynical, saw them as bedtime stories. Initially. Until he got into a row with the illustrator over painting Henry inconsistently. In one of the early books, Henry is mentioned as being sick. We know now that this was the reverend planting the seed to remove the character, who became a headache to him. But he had a change of heart. He instead gave henry his own book in which he is redeemed and allowed a refit. A second chance. To Thomas fans, this is the moment. That he started to care, really. Reflecting reality, and creatung maps, and real trains schedules, corrseponding with children that asked questions in letters, because he didnt erase the issue. He wrote in a way to amke it work for him, for the characters, for the story, and for the kids. This means nothing to most people. But its a lesson i take to heart. A heart shaped by the strangely rude trains on this strange little island. But aside from that, this island is sanctuary, it encourages real life preservation efforts, the show inspired filmmakers my age, and affected even musicians and painters and people who want to manage ip and protect stories from what happened to Thomas. And the the Reverend. See, ignoring the movies, there are 24 seasons of thomas. Only ten are good. The first 5, with the most exquisite modelmaking and production philo ive seen, directed by Thunderbirds veteran, david mitton. And sime of the cgi series written in a new spin by Andrew brenner. And ive leraned just as much from the baby show seasons, the cynical seasons, the formulaic, anodyne, tripe, that made alot of money, that which is antithetical to the Reverends legacy. That forced progress is not progress. Just because yoy can update a story, doesnt mean you should. I think transformers did that well. But when art is driven by money, its not art. This is, an obvious rhing that we all know. But i learned it early, from thomas. The cautious, but driven, idealistic, and hopefully, skeptical in the healthy Way, ME, lives on cybertron. In the endless war between exploration and conquest. Deception and valor. But my heart, my unconscious progenitor of self, is on that island. I love thomas the tank engine because it is the greatest work place drama ever written. Because those engines dont always get along. But if not for that sanctuary and the people who maintain their rails, if they were on the mainland, they would be taken to pieces and recycled, unremebered . So i remeber them, Sodor is a haven for them, a heaven almost. The original books dont hide this. Its not subtextual. There are some mentionsand outright illustrations of engines being taken to bits. Pulling pubches a bit but not becacuse his audience was kids, but because as a hobbyist, it pained him to think of one of his characters being undone. I think, thats the purest art. And that tv show for all i inherited from it, ruined the mans legacy. But he never blamed the kids. He predicted it would happen. But he wanted to make kids happy. I love that man. And i love those funny little trains. Yes, As mush as i love Optimus Prime. They are a reminder to me of who the war of art is for, the innocent, the child in allof us, and the way to invigorate that spirit in all of us to fight the cynical decepticons of the world. We seek higher things because of wonder, and duty. Not for recognition or supremacy. I love those trains, and those robots, as human and real to me as my own mother. Because they both inspired my philospohy and creativity. I made them real. I am not reateded for liking toy tobots that turn into cars, or slice of life snippets of talking trains that argue over pointless things. Im retarded because i post essays in youtube comments sections. But I got something from it. Im as selfish as that cheeky little tank engine twat. But art, pushes us to be better. Even if we forget how it formed us as children, it still did.. And to transform is to go back and understand why. I went full circle! I did it! I made it make sense!
