Phd student and great painter. Thats quite impressive. 3 major readings on the first day with Q's. Those looked like 30 pages each. Thats quite a major undertaking. And quite not fair but thats life.

Found your channel while looking for advice for applying to PhD programs in psychology (successfully applied now the long wait for decisions). I hope your research is going well especially with transfers to online for everything, I am also conducting my research online! Love your videos! :)

@@LifeWithZoeee Thank you, yeah I’m trying not to drive myself crazy with the waiting! Currently I’m doing research on the neuropsychological evaluations of anxiety, depression, and comorbid! It’s for my masters thesis and should be done this spring.

I have been enjoying watching your blogs, and I like that you are just you - authentic and open. I have been struggling to get back into work and school as well, and seeing clients. I’m also starting to think more about PhD programs in counseling that I want to apply for and how to go about this. Question for you - how likely do you think someone who is getting, or has, their Masters in Counseling, can get into a Doctoral program in counseling or psych? What are your thoughts on that?

There are a lot more factors to take into account than just whether or not you have a Master's, but it definitely would help! More importantly, however, is your research experience, "fit" with the program, letters of rec, and grades/GRE. Programs should take all these factors into account and look at each applicant pretty holistically for their potential to succeed in the program.

Life with Zoë ~ Hi Zoë , thanks for your response. A follow-up question: if someone does NOT have any research experience, but IS interested in doing research in a certain area of counseling, would this negatively affect one’s chances when applying for PhD psych programs? I ask because I don’t have any research experience, just the basic stuff from research papers for classes in my Masters program, but aside from that nothing else. I keep wondering if this would hurt my chances of getting in, and whether it would even be worth trying to apply?

To be completely honest, I think research experience is one of the most important parts of the application, since PhD programs are heavily research-based. I also think it's important do get research experience before a PhD program because going into a PhD program is a huge research commitment, and you need to be pretty confident that it's something you really want to pursue. Doing research and realizing you hate it is just as valuable as doing it and realizing you love it. That being said, it still isn't the only part of the application, and you can make up for it in other areas, and not everything you do has to be totally relevant to your field of study. Moral of the story, I don't think it is a make-or-break decision, but I do think a year or so of some research experience would help to make sure it's truly something you want to do. Lastly, disclaimer: take everything I say with a grain of salt. I don't know your whole story and can only speak on behalf of my own experience. :)
