The Flemish dialect(s) can indeed be tricky, even for native Dutch speakers. It depends how strong their dialect is. It's like British English and American English, sort of.

I've worked in restaurants in Weert for 15 years, close to Belgium, so we often had a lot of Belgian guests. I've learned quite a bit about Belgians and always really enjoyed serving them. They're polite, kind, don't mind to enjoy a nice beer at 11 in the morning 😂 But seriously, such kind and polite kids and adults, a true pleasure to have as a guest. Edit, a lot of German people are very polite as well, British too until they're drunk 😂😭 But the Belgians definitely stand out in politeness. 😊

You likely know this but...Belgium beer is often pretty strong. In an early visit I ordered a La Chouffe (I'm a sucker for red-hatted gnomes) and our cousin leaned over and said "that's 8%" beer... feeling brave I downed it quickly. Then, realizing I should have listened, I said "OK I'll try something else" and ordered a Duvel. Cousin leans over and proclaims "That's also 8%" ... it was a long fietstocht home...🙃

You will find that there is a strong bond between the Netherlands and Vlamingen. The difference in language is very interesting, very soft, very charming and they still use a lot of old Dutch phrases. I love it. Fun fact about the church, It has two main towers. They actually never finished the second one (I believe because of funding issues). Also the rivalry between Antwerpen and Amsterdam is an interesting story regarding Diamonds.

I’m in Belgium at the moment also in the place of Hamont. Staying in “hotel Hooghuys”. This hotel (restaurant) has no menu-card. The Chef, Peter, tells you what ingredients he has bought and what he is going like to make. Taking in consideration what you don’t like or what not agrees with you! Every time its a treat and surprise what he makes. For the last seven years this is a fixed reservation in Oktober. During the weekend of Budel Offroad 4x4.

As a Belgium I can tell, never do take the tours in Breweries. Just to any somewhat popular local pub and you'll find a much larger selection of beers and go have a tasting afternoon/evening/night there. Way more fun ;) In a few months there is the "Tour De Geuze", a naturally fermented beer only produced around Brussels. Maybe a tip for a next trip to the South ;)

Ghent and Brugge you should not miss out on. And while you are at it: throw Leuven in the mix too which is the biggest student city. In Brugge there is more chocolate to be found and of course Brugse Zot beer. That tour around the beer brewing facility I can recommend. You even get a nice glimpse at Brugge skyline. Also Antwerpen Zoo just near the station I really enjoyed. Same goes for the docks in Antwerpen. With all the different pubs, restaurants it felt a bit Rotterdam to me. It really got a nice vibe near the docks with Bar Paniek / Burgerij het Eilandje (Bar Panick / Burgertent the little Island) or Fiskeskur if you are into fish. Still a Bolleke with meat and real Flemish Fries / Vlaamse fritten any where will do. Cant say the same about the mayonaise though. I like it more Dutch style sweet then savory

The origins of the name of Antwerp comes from aan de werpe, which is Dutch for "at the throw", referring to where the river throws its sand. The name also has a funny anecdote saying it comes from Hand werpen, which translated is "throwing hands".

From the Unesco site: Historic Centre of Brugge Brugge is an outstanding example of a medieval historic settlement, which has maintained its historic fabric as this has evolved over the centuries, and where original Gothic constructions form part of the town's identity. As one of the commercial and cultural capitals of Europe, Brugge developed cultural links to different parts of the world. It is closely associated with the school of Flemish Primitive painting.

I've worked for a Dutch company for many years that had a subsidiary in Belgium. There are many differences between Dutch and Flemish, but if you are aware of that, you can get around it. Just acknowledge the differences, and ask for clarification if needed. As for other places to visit in Belguim, although Brugge is often mentioned as a "must visit" (and is is actually good), it would be worthwhile to consider Ghent. Although both are touristy, I believe Ghent is slightly less so, and also underestimated. Definitely worth a visit!

I live close to the Belgium border and have probably heard Flemish dialects since before I was born, and I even struggle now and again with some of the local dialects and a lot of the local words. Antwerpen is not the place with the most difficult dialect at all, so be warned. I see Brugge and Gent have both been mentioned already, as expected. There are a lot of interesting smaller places, but these are not always so easy to reach with public transport. Leuven might be a nice one (lots of students there), or somewhat smaller, I find Geraardsbergen appealing as well. Maybe a cycling tour in summer from Maastricht, into the border area just across the border, mostly nature and the hilly terrain. The food in Belgium is generally very good. They are more Burgundian than the Dutch are.

So did you find cuberdons in Antwerp? Because they are a very local candy and they are not local to Antwerp. They are locally called Neuzekes/Gentse Neuzekes (dialect for 'small noses'). Which gives you an idea where you'll find them: Ghent. Although they are mostly known and sold it Ghent, they are actually from a town called Eeklo (about 20km from Ghent).

Also good to know is they have a limited shelf life. They will dry out and the filling will crystallize. They can be found in supermarkets, but the good/fresh ones are sold in 2 competing (it's fierce competition, they had literal fights in the past) stalls next to "groentenmarkt". They are my de in different flavours these days, but the puple ones are the original ones.

If you're going to explore flanders like you did the netherlands then you should probably start with visiting the capitals of each flemish province. You allready started with Antwerp. Gent and Brugge are probably the next most visited cities in Belgium you haven't visited yet (capitals of Oost- and West-Vlaanderen). Leuven (the capital of Vlaams-Brabant) has Belgiums oldest University and is the home of probably the most known belgian beer internationally: stella. Hasselt is the capital of the belgian province of Limburg. It's the least touristy of the 5 flemish province capitals. Ieper is also worth a visit. The poem In Flanders Fields is about the area around Ieper. You can expect alot of world war 1 history there. And next time you drive to Mechelen to rent a campervan, maybe visit the city center. As someone who lives in the next town over I can say while small the city is worth a visit.
@mefeather
@mefeather 6 ай бұрын
All good suggestions. Also, The Old market (Oude Markt) of Leuven is called the "langste toog" because it's almost all cafe after cafe after cafe there. Hasselt is known for Belgian jenever. It also has a Jenevermuseum (and I think you can also taste the jenever). Besides the graan jenevers they have even more fruity or other flavours in their jenever. Like Pear, Walnut, Plum, Rose, Lemon, Passion Fruit etcetera. I really like the fruity jenevers. If you ever have time try to compare the Dutch Lemon Jenever with Wortegemse, a Belgian one. See the difference in the colour and definitely in the flavour. Anyway, enough about jenevers. ;-)

Belgian mayonnaise btw is actually real mayonnaise. in the Netherlands we mostly get "frietsaus" with your fries, which is why I always get mine without and to go, so I can put actual mayonnaise on it when I get home. I'm not a hundred percent sure, but I believe in Belgium brands aren't allowed to call the frietsaus stuff mayonnaise, while here most friettenten just call it mayo as well and you have to ask if it's actual mayo. and yes, I am very passionate about my mayo :)

The Brabantian dialects (roughly provinces of Vlaams-Brabant and Antwerpen) are the easiest to understand because standard Dutch/Flemish was based on these. Then you have Limburg dialects to the east (roughly province of Limburg) but most difficult to understand are the Flemish dialects (roughly provinces Oost- and West-Vlaanderen. The further you move west the worse it gets.

And if you enjoy the beers there too much (won't blame you) find a B&B nearby, get rid of the hang over next day with a spa day in Thermaalbad Arcen. It's like 2km away of the Hertog Jan beer brewery site. Sadly Fidele is now gone but his memory isn't. Just ask any Brugge native, as he was made famous by all the tourists taking pictures of him. Maybe someday I'll attempt to paint him too. People recommend Brugge (Bruges) and while it's certainly a beautiful city it's been overdone. There are literally thousands of videos about visiting Brugge. The only way you could make something original is by falling in one of the canals. Instead you could visit Bokrijk (open air museum with reconstructed buildings from all over the country). Or visit Gaasbeek and Beersel castles south of Brussels. The first one is filled to the brim with a rich collection of antiques, the second one is in its almost original medieval condition. This is also the region of Gueuze, Lambiek and Kriek beers.

What is the myth of Antwerp? He defeated the extortionist Antigoon, cut off his hand, and threw it into the river as the same as his deeds. According to folklore, the name of the city Antwerp (Antwerpen in Flemish, hand werpen in Dutch, hand and wearpan [to throw] in Old English) is originated from the act of Brabo throwing the hand.

Now, sadly I feel you missed alot of quirky and special things to see and experience in Antwerp. I am not the kind of person that goes from church to church because they happens to be old BUT Antwerp has something really odd: Sint Paulus Kerk. On the outside, its a nice building but INSIDE... ITS LIKE A GIGANTIC CHESS BOARD! Everything in the church is black and white, from columns to the altar piece to the floor and decoration. I have never seen anything like it! Or Fashion museum of Antwerp; the biggest such museum outside Paris and Milan. I have NO idea why it is in Antwerp. ...and 'make your own diamond ring'. Well, its not a real diamond. You are tought how to create facets out of glass cristals, but you learn how to do it. It's in the middle of Antwerp Diamond dustrict (the model for the diamant district in NYC) and if you like, you can buy the 'diamant' ring you just created for about Euro 50 or 60...

Did you realise the Brabo legend is what gave Antwerpen it's name? Well, not really but that's what the legend says. Antwerpen = Handwerpen = Throwing hands.

You should go to the West Flanders and visit Ieper and learn a lot about the fighting and cruelties of the First World War

@@buncharted I agree, with this comment. Flanders Fields is certainly a place you must visit. You could also visit Bastogne in the Ardennes and epicentre of the Battle of the Bulge in 1944-45.

Whatever you do and go see art in Belgium, the Verbeke Foundation in kemzeke is nice to visit, BUT dont drink koffie or thee there. The water comes from the shitpt. I worked there for a year and a half and know exactly whats going on there. The Owners are brutal.

Yep, that is where the name come from: Hand throwing = "hand werpen". The Belgs don't pronounce the "h'.

Yes, we never say "doei", that sounds very silly for a Flemish ear. We say "da-aag" or "bye" or "tot de volgende" or "tot gauw" or "yo" ,.... There are plenty of options but never "doei" or "doeg".

This is an unproven myth, but there are stories that say that Antwerpen is named for 'Hand Werpen' (the tossing of hands).

Bruges can be touristic, but at the same time very much not. Find the place where young Bruges people can study making lace from the old. Kantcentrum vzw... More of a community center than a museum.

horse meat is not from a real horse. Many donkeys are bred in Belgium and sold as horse meat. A donkey is related to a horse and may be called that. Furthermore, it does not affect the good taste of this meat.
