Planning for access to water refills on your route is also a big consideration for ocean touring. Just finished a trip where we had to pack all of the water for multiple days as there was only one water source available in the area (only accessible on day 3 based on our route). Even though we were aware of this and had prepared, we were still worryingly short on water by the time we reached the refill spot because we had to alter our route a bit to deal with unexpected campsite availability challenges. Local knowledge on the seasonality of water sources is also important as maps may show fresh water that is not available at the time of year that you are touring.

Great point well highlighted James. Like you said it really comes down to planning and trying to understand your route and the problems and limitations you my face along your journey. But I guess you can only plan for so many eventualities in the end. Top comment thanks Reuben

Hi Will I’m about to buy my first SUP and have been watching your videos. I just watched the Menorca film. It didn’t look like you guys were wearing buoyancy aids. Is that right and if so, why not? Thanks pal.

Hi Yertle - glad you enjoyed the film - it was a fun trip and a fun film to make. Yes you are right on the buoyancy aids , we were not wearing them on this trip. If I was doing the trip again we probably would wear inflatable waist PFD - at the time we decided not to as we were always paddling very close to shore - there was no big bays to cross that would put us far from the shore and we were paddling in a good sized group. Also, now theres much more products widely available so would certainly take one as part of personal safety kit. Personally I don't like paddling in a BA (non inflatable) and when I do paddle with personal flotation I always prefer a waist inflatable PFD. Cheers, Will - SUPboarder Team

Just getting started with SUP, but have done a fair bit of UK wild camping and must say, making a fire is a stupid idea when wild camping and gives otherwise tolerant landowners a great reason to tell you to ffff off.

hi there - yes, absolutely you have to be very careful to respect land owners whenever wild camping. If we are not responsible wild camping will become harder to enjoy. I would agree, if not on a beach, or in an area where fires are permitted I would not have an open fire. Regards, Will - SUPboarder
