I wonder if more people associate "messy" with "dirty" whereas the person living in the space is more likely to equate "messy" with "disorganized chaos" when they say, "my room is so messy." "Cluttered" may refer to "organized chaos" --- lots of items in the room but they all serve their purpose and are oriented for ease of use. It's all semantics. ^J^ You're right; those earrings are super cool.
