There's a pretty good idea for a game in this. Use the mechanic of not wanting the egg to break, and make it that you start at the top of a huge pile of terrain items, and you have to figure out how to navigate your way down. You could hide egg-transforming items in the terrain too... So like an oven that fries you, a hot spring that turns you into a hard boiled egg, an incubator that hatches you partly so you get little feet or wings.... Etc. This would allow for multiple pathways down the junkheap and replayability. I have animation experience and would totally work on this idea if there are any programmers who would want to code it?

7:28 semi-fun semi-fact: Bennett himself often refers to all these similar games as `golfing over it clones`, as he feels they all pull a lot more strongly from its inspiration than from getting over its. good video, nl.
@cookiebandit184 жыл бұрын
Hey, that's exactly how I thought about it.
@PHeMoX4 жыл бұрын
Of course he would say that, as he actually stole the game idea from a very similar older free game himself. The most notable difference being that particular older game looked terrible and was like a decade old. To pretend Getting Over It is somehow an original game is laughably uninformed. I don't mind the success of the game, but I'd say it's pretty uncalled for to make any remarks about the clones. At least Flappy Bird's creator never pretended it was his original idea. And Getting Over It actually isn't a flawless game really. It's no Super Meat Boy in terms of control. You're fighting the poor controls, which in my opinion is just poor game design.
@FreyrFox4 жыл бұрын
@@PHeMoX no one, myself or Bennett, pretends its his idea either. The first few minutes of getting over it mention the game plenty enough to give it it's due credit
@IanZWhite004 жыл бұрын
PHeMoX Bennet talks about sexy hiking within the first couple minutes of play. He literally says it’s where the gameplay came from. The entire game is created from pre-made assets, ripped from their original context. The narration discusses the ideology behind this in depth. Also the controls aren’t bad. They’re precise and consistent, and it’s very possible to get good with them as with any other well designed game. They just seem obtuse because they’re unique. Go read some reviews for the early twin stick shooters where major outlets were struggling with the concept of camera movement, they’re actually hilarious. It’s okay to call the other clones derivative. Sexy hiking is an inspiration in gameplay alone. These other games borrow the visuals and aesthetics, narration, music, and general presentation nearly exactly, on top of the gameplay. This could be a genre, the sort of single-level, interactive-sculpture style masochism thing, but making the styles so similar is what throws people off.
@leonhardfrommhold84634 жыл бұрын
@@IanZWhite00 yeah, many clones don't manage the weird controls without them being random or boring, One that did it well I think it Pogostuck, a new idea, incredibly difficult but in its own way. Another great example of the single level masochism climbing archetype is Jump King, that one is truly great. I do however feel like these games made are just as much to be enjoyed while playing them yourself as they're designed to fill days upon days of streaming time for bored variety streamers with sadistic chats

To be honest, what gets me about Getting Over It is that the actual movement mechanics, quirky as they were, were actually really polished. When I played that one, I never felt like it was cheap cause it has bad controls or was jank in the wrong ways. That's why it kept me going without raging a single time for hours. This one uh. Issa box and you fling it around. The difference is staggering to me.
@RND_ADV_X4 жыл бұрын
I think there's also a lot of emergent humor in the player being a burly topless man with a sledgehammer stuck in an iron kettle. That's visually funny and connected to the mechanics, but it's also a really smart allegory for modern culture.
@Fachewachewa4 жыл бұрын
Most of the "clones" are meme games, getting over it was more than just memes. Bennett has welcomed all the clones, but he said they were more inspired by golfing over it than getting over it, and I think the gameplay is definitely what separates them. Also, I think I remember the narrator in golfing say something about the controls being part of the frustration in getting over it, which I think is a mistake. And every subsequent game in the genre followed that same mistake. (The whole value judgement is entirely mine, not Bennett's. And I still think there's a value in all those games, I'm very curious to see what it leads to)

There is absolutely no problem with so called "Hundreds of anime style visual novels" coming out on steam. 1. That number is a grotesque exaggeration. 2. There is a tag system on steam that games use, and an advanced search function on steam, so you can find every genre of game you are actually looking for, including new release indie games. 3. To complain for the sake of complaining is to deepthroat chaos and accept the results, especially when theres an advanced search system that completely invalidates your reason for a complaint to begin with. Let people have their cake, they are in no way harming your own fork fed spongy goodness.

I wouldn't say Dark Souls is comparable to something like this at all. Because Dark Souls involves timing and consistent controls, along with enemies having a fair response to player input. Yes, it can be difficult, but it is always fair. Games like Getting Over it and Boxman pretend the poor controls don't exist, but in reality these games aren't really all that fair. It's a trial and error game, not a skill based game. In that way, Dark Souls is a 100x times better game, because it rewards actual skill.
