My partner also had his dreads for 11 years, age 15-26. I cried when he told me he was cutting them off and I still have them in a ziplock bag almost 7 years later! He also sort of had a life changing realization and it is cool to see how your story of finding who you are was similar to his.Those years are important in life and help to shape the adults we will some day become. He was known as the guy with dreads and now without them he was a “normal guy” but the hair never defined who he was and it doesn’t define you. Glad I stumbled onto this video. Also you look great with or without dreads! Thanks for sharing your story!

Just wanted to put a note here, locs/locks would be a term that all should use instead of dreadlocks due to the historical context from the Rastafarian movement. The term "dreads" defines my hair as disgusting, disturbing, or not right, and was coined during the time where Europeans looked down on Rastafarian hairstyles. Today this is still the case, so locks is a term to not only be respectful to black history, but to also acknowledge it's presence and how it influences the world when these styles are worn by non-black people. 😁

Lamonica Hampton Rastas in Jamaica called and still call them dreadlocks. Dread also means “awe” and that is the meaning used in dreadlocks. This new thing people are saying just means they don’t know the history at all. As Bob Marley said, “Dread natty dreadlocks...”

Look at Merriam Webster’s second definition of Dread in the dictionary “one causing fear or awe.” This is the usage in the King James Bible that Rastas use so that was the sense in which they called their own hair dreadlocks.

I understand the feeling Tyler. I had long hair for 5 years. Dreads for 2 years. Most people knew me with dreads. But you’re 100% correct. People perceive you differently with dread especially being white. No one knows that I had them. I mainly get questions about my earlobes. And I explain it as that was my path to man hood. I had to experience the hate and disapproval to understand the struggle that many people go thru.

Thank you for your honesty and not being afraid to not know where your life is going while you still try to fulfill your dreams (even though dreams change and get rerouted). I’m 49 years old and have kids a bit younger than you and I’ve told them their entire lives that if they live a life of passion (even if that passion only lasts a season), their lives will be full. Unfortunately, most of my peers and family completely disagree with me... “they need to go to college”, “they need to work 40 hours a week and be like the rest of society”, “you are allowing your kids to be slackers”, “dreams are for fools”, “life is work, it’s not fun and games”, you get the message that I’ve fought for years to allow my kids the right to live a life of passion. I really need to show them this video in hopes that it will get them to understand that yes, doodles can make an income, that no one should have to cut their hair to be successful, and most importantly that some times the journey is the perfect plan.

Your 20s are an amazing time to experiment and see what works. When I turned 25 I jokingly called it my quarter life crisis. I had just gotten back from Peace corps and moved halfway across the country for a job. I recently turned 30 and I'm all sorts of pumped for a new decade! Deadass i felt the SAME WAY!! i had dreads for 10years. I grew out my hair and let it dread up rasta way natural. But like you, dreads was a learning experience that i grew into myself. I love having short hair now. This was a great video. From 2008 till 2018 i had dreads. All different sizes and some grew into the same dread making a 3 tip 1 stem dread. True rasta dread love. Man! It was almost terrifying how relatable this video was. I had long hair for 13 years. It was my pride and joy! But I fell into a depression, and slowly without realizing there were events during that time that lead me to finally getting rid of my locks. I told Like 2 people that I was actually going to do it. However because I've hinted at cutting my hair in the past nobody actually believed I would. I loved my hair. It wasn't just a style for me but how I actually identified myself. It was the one thing about my image I actually liked. And that was the problem! After awhile I felt like all the attachments I had in my life were the very thing holding me back. So one day I made the decision that one by one I was going to get rid of everything I felt attached to. And the number one thing was my hair! So I made an appointment, a week later I walked out a totally different person.
