Getting Started As a Crestron Programmer

Having worked in the AV industry for quite some time, I’ve seen people “stuck” in the role that they have started in and never have the opportunity to advance or really explore new opportunities. In this recording of a live broadcast, I discuss some of the challenges of starting out with Crestron Programming and how I plan to help you learn more about it on your own time.

Good video. What you described is exactly how it is out there. I am one of those people that have been 'stuck' doing service calls and installs for a long time and couldn't find that bridge to understand programming. I ended up buying a cp2e off ebay used, and since I'm employed w/ a company that is a Crestron dealer, I got all the software I needed. Then just spent a couple weeks after work, tinkering with it, finding any youtube videos that gave some insight, forum posts, whatever and tried to build off any hints. Those could weeks went by and was able to program my small bedroom system with SIMPL, and made my own interface using VT-Pro which I loaded to the crestron app and also an xpanel.

if you are not part of the family or very close to someone in the company they won't send you to training i have been working with crestron dealers in Boston and NY as an installer for many years. at this point i think the only way to get certified is creating my own company and sending myself to training.

I am glad to see there is someone out there who understands this fundamental gap in the industry. Unfortunately I see this issue coming from a small integration team. As slow as we get I have to keep my mind open to move to better teams who can support their employees in this way. I have a lot of experience with RTI systems, however the companies I want to move to almost exclusively work with Crestron hardware. As someone who wants to take the first steps into making myself a more valuable employee I have done a lot of searching for something to grab onto as you put it. Can you offer any advice to someone who has worked with similar product and can understand this from the install and programming side but that wants to learn about Crestron's ecosystem in order to become more appealing to Integration companies?

I want you to be my mentor in molding me to be a great crestron programmer. I am exposed to the AV Industry but never get to learn programming. This has been the problem with our company and they never give me the chance to train in this field.
