Getting Started in Beekeeping - Part 4 - Honeybee Evolution and Aristotle!
This series of videos is designed for the new beekeeper or for someone who is thinking of starting to keep bees for the very first time.
In this video I look at how the honeybee has evolved over millions of yers and how the honeybee was viewed in ancient times by people such as Aristotle.
Information relating to Aristotle was found at www.agriculture.purdue.edu/ag...
Beekeeping can be a total pleasure but beekeeping can also be a total pain! Get things wrong and beekeeping becomes a frustration and not a joy.
In this basic beekeeping series called Getting Started in Beekeeping I aim to help anyone who is thinking of starting beekeeping or has just started beekeeping to gain more knowledge and understanding about beekeeping and therefore enjoy the beekeeping experience even more.

Hi Adam, Thanks for your comments and welcome to the growing community. I'm going to start a new colony in the Spring as if I had just bought them so watch out for that series of videos in the coming New Year. Stewart

Perhaps the transporting of bees over large distances helped spread the varroa mites among other diseases. Example, Hawaii island now has varroa mite infestation as of relatively recently. I think people unwittingly do more damage than we think.

Yes, Thomas, most of the problems honeybees face are caused by beekeepers unwittingly moving pests and diseases from apiary to apiary and country to country. Stewart

We just have to take the best care we can of them and help them survive in the best possible way.

Man did not appear 25mya. The _Homo_ genus is thought to have first appeared around 2-2.5 mya so you've probably just added an extra 0 to that at some point. Full bipedalism is about 3.6 mya and _sapiens_ is 300,000-130,000 ya.

@@TheNorfolkHoneyCo No problem friend. Since I have your attention I thought I'd ask you a quick question if you have a second. I work at a hotel/restaurant and we're thinking of keeping bees on the grounds and using their honey sometimes (hence I am watching your videos). Thing is, we're right on the A1 so the hives would have to be at most 50 metres away from it. We're just wondering about the risk of pollution getting into the honey from all the vehicles. Is it considered safe among beekeepers to have honey produced so close to a major road? The area isn't particularly urban apart from the A1. If we go through with it, we may get the honey tested for metals, PAHs and pesticides anyway.
