Will work if your vari-ND has markings indicating how much f-stops it cuts or you mark it by yourself. Then is simple: meter says you need 8.0 but you want to shoot at 2.0. Looking at the meter dial you count how many stops is the difference - 4 stops. Set your vari-ND to cut 4 stops and lens at 2.0.
