Subbed! I'm just beginning to explore programming as a second career; at 44, I'm learning that basing my income on physical work is risky. Of course, everyone says "learn to code" and I get it, but I couldn't think of "what" to do with programming...? Then it hit me last night as I was reading my gazetteer: combine programming and GIS, and build apps! Because yes...I have sat and looked at maps all of my life, much like others read novels, lol. And I thought I was weird... ; ) Thank you for this channel, Katie! - Ben

I’m glad to hear you are embracing something new and exciting. If programming doesn’t suit you it’s ok. There are so many things you can do with GIS without programming and in the environmental side you can get outdoors some too!

I am looking to get into becoming a historical gis analyst. What I mean is research properties and make maps with them. What I mean is when you click on a piece of property it shows the deed history of that property and any fun facts such as when it was built or if a event happened on that property. In order to view the deeds, you have to go to the county recorder. Another option could be to go to the recorder or show proof if id especially if you are not the property owner. This is because as to not break confidentiality and so you will not try to steal the property from the owner. I am also wondering is it a good idea to get a geography degree with emphasis in remote sensing or get a degree in geographic information systems or just get a certificate.

This has been really helpful! I've always heard about Esri and GIS data as a data analyst, but have never had a use case for it until recently. Your walk through is super clear and straightforward. Thanks for this video and all the rest :)

Is the FREE ArcGIS Online able for you to get geo-distance radius locations (20 miles, 50 miles, 70 miles radius in the U.S.)? Like given, New York, and you are provided hospital locations and supplier locations, and you want 50 miles radius of suppliers from a hospital in NY.

Thank you for the video. I have a question about using Arc GIS Online or other options. I don't think there is a way to extract the raster elevation value onto a polygon through ArcGIS Online. Can it only be done through ArcMap and ArcPro? I appreciate your feedback.
@KatieScheurer3 жыл бұрын
My guess would be no. I think you will need to step up to ArcPro. But you could create your own tool and launch it in online or portal to expand your capabilities.

Hey I am trying to export a map (with street map as base map) to jpeg but I am not getting all details in the image. If i zoom in, I get the details but not the whole map. *I am new to arcgis (My Map is a larger area within a state)
@KatieScheurer4 жыл бұрын
That is due to the visibility levels on the base map. There is a vector base map editor that Esri provides where you can change that setting. developers.arcgis.com/vector-tile-style-editor/. This is a little more advanced if you are a beginner but poke around and have some fun with it. That is part of working with GIS.

Hey @ Katie Scheurer Thanks for the video. I have a question. Is it valid to use the maps generated by the online software for research publications?
@KatieScheurer3 жыл бұрын
I think you can as long as you understand the map and data that is presented. Also you would want to give credit to the researchers and creator as you would for any resource.

Any advice for someone who wants to get into urban planning with GIS?
@KatieScheurer4 жыл бұрын
GIS can be a great tool in urban planning and development. I would encourage you to learn how to layer and analyze information spatially to help solve problems you will come across in your studies. Working with land management and census data could be very valuable.
