Thank you so much! That short tutorial cleared up so much while also teaching me a few things that I didn't even realize i could do in the raw tab! You're doing amazing work and please keep it up!

Landon Stuckey super glad to hear it helped! I honestly wasn’t sure with this one if it would as I’m totally ignoring the HDR side of this but I will be addressing that next week as a separate topic a between the two videos I hope you get the understanding you were looking for :)

@@FilmResolved I know you were not ignoring the HDR side since you did mention that you were handling that topic separately. As I have been learning more since my original post, I did realize how i unintentionally combined two separate and unrelated topics into one question, but you did an amazing job addressing the first part. I can not wait to play around with BRAW more based on what you have demonstrated already and I am super excited for the upcoming HDR video!

@@FilmResolved Thanks for the reply! Oo I have one question... With BRAW footage is it better to use these raw settings for grading instead of their equivalents in the colour panel (colour temp, tint etc)?
@FilmResolved
@FilmResolved 3 жыл бұрын
Yes it’s better. Do as much as you can from the Camera RAW tab before moving on to using other tools.

@@FilmResolved Good to know! I'm an experienced DIY film-maker but self-taught so trying to push my understanding a bit better. Is there anywhere you'd recommend I go for a bit more about what these RAW settings actually do in Davinci versus what their equivalent settings do in the rest of the tab (which I've always used and got used to), so like 'Black Level, Whitle Level, and Midpoint' versus 'Lift, Gamma, and Gain', or what the difference is between changing contrast and temp etc in the RAW settings versus under the colour wheels. Also one more thing (sorry!) I notice my ISO only goes up to 1000 in these settings, is that because it was shot in this lower range? If I shot at 1250 upwards would the ISO range then show as 1250-24000 or whatever the upper limit on the camera is?
@FilmResolved
@FilmResolved 3 жыл бұрын
When you alter setting in the raw tab you are altering how the raw data is debayed where as the other settings the data has already been debayed and in short is not as flexible. As an example to try explain this let’s look at color temp. Imagine you’re shooting on camera that doesn’t shoot raw and has a weak codec. Well on that camera the sensor still sees raw data but is processed (debayed) into a codec. If you set your color temp totally wrong and adjust in post your image will start to break and show nasty artefacts etc. If you had set your color temp correct it wouldn’t be an issue becuase our not pushing the image far from its debayed starting point. We that’s what’s so powerful about raw is that you retain all that data and debay the image in post in the raw tab. Once an image is debayed your now manipulating it from a set state and are now running the risk of pushing it too far and breaking it. With raw you can debay the image into a really strong starting point! Hopefully that made some sense 😂 and yes you’re exactly right about the ISO, you can only switch between the ISO range of the circuit you shot in camera so 100-1000 and 1250-25600.

How are you playing the BRAW in realtime? Mine drops to like 7fps during playback and I have a really good computer setup... Cant figure it out. Optimizing kills the workflow. Got to be a better way. Awesome video btw. Great info

I asked Blackmagic directly because I was curious. Because in the 100-1000 ISO range you just chance the middle grey point the clipping point stays the same. And I have testet it - same clipping point with 100 or thousand...it is just..."squeezed" very title if you will...almost as if it is clipped...but obviously it isn#t because otherwise you could not get it back. "And lots of informations are clipped"...they are not - as you also can see on the frame itself. Just wanted to clarifiy that ;). Sounded more adversary than it meant to be...but I am a German...we always try to correct other people in a "strict" way. sorry to appear that way. You have a great channel :). Keep up the god work!

Thank you for the clear explanation! Does this mean that I can leave my grey card at home and not to worry about white balance at all? Also, you know when you bump ISO too high, you starting to introduce a noise, so if I am shooting RAW and I will lower ISO in post, will it also lower the noise back? Thanks!
@FilmResolved
@FilmResolved 3 жыл бұрын
The honest answer is I don't know for sure. On paper, yes, your theory is sound. How ever this is something you'd want to test to have confidence in. I would always reccomend nailing your white balance and keeping your ISO at native for optimal dynamic range. It would be interesting to see the results though if its something yo do get around to testing :)

Great tutorial! Thank you! One Question: Is there a difference to e.g. Adjusting the Saturation in the Camera options to adjusting it in the color wheels?
@FilmResolved
@FilmResolved 3 жыл бұрын
In general any setting available in the camera raw setting is better to work with as this will make the change before the data is debayed. That said, if you’re making reasonable sized adjustments the difference is negligible and you’re getting into pixel peeping territory so I certainly wouldn’t over thing it. But is short yes there is a difference and it’s better to do the adjustments in camera raw settings. 👍

The decode Quality options only affect playback and not final render I'm guessing? As in , f you pick a lesser quality here to help playback when editing, the final render will still be the full quality?
@FilmResolved
@FilmResolved 4 жыл бұрын
No, this will affect the finel render! The manual says (page 176) "If necessary, you can choose a lower resolution setting that provides better real time playback on systems with limited performance while you work, and then switch to a higher quality when rendering the final output. A “Force debayer res to highest quality” checkbox in the Render Settings list of the Deliver page makes it easy to follow this workflow. Hope this helps, DRAZ

Can someone please tell me what a node is..!
@FilmResolved
@FilmResolved 3 жыл бұрын
A node is like and iteration of your footage. For example the first node will be your clip with no adjustments that you can start to correct or grade. On this first node you might apply contrast. If you add a serial node after this that second node is the second iteration of your clip with the contrast applied. You might show add saturation. The third node will now be a third iteration of the clip with both contrast and saturation added. And this can go on and on. A node will take the clip as its inputted to it, be a canvas you can add more adjustments to and then output the altered clip.You can add lots of adjustments to a single node or do a node per adjustment and keep its super organised. Then there are different types of node that will behave differently differently for different results depending on your requirements for example layer / parallel nodes are great when you are qualifying and adjusting precise parts of your clip. If you’ve every used other editing / colouring software they’re very similar to layers but far more versatile!

If I shot a clip at 1250 ISO, why is it limiting me when I want to go and adjust the ISO? Yours dropped to 400, mine at 1250 would go as low as 800. Just curious if you shoot in RAW, why won't it allow you to have COMPLETE control.
@FilmResolved
@FilmResolved 3 жыл бұрын
Assuming you’re footage was shot on a BMPCC 4K or 6K, this is because they’re dual native ISO. 100-1000 is on one circuit and 1250 upwards is on another. This is basically a hardware limit ion that’s triggered. You can only change within those two ranges based on which range was shot in.

@@FilmResolved ok thanks man! I was gonna ask it can be subject but for a great cinematic look I’ve been shooting RAW and constant quality at Q0 Would you have any suggestions as to what would be the best look? It’s not for Vlogging or doing podcast It’s a feature film Just was curious what your experience has been using it Thanks again
@FilmResolved
@FilmResolved 3 жыл бұрын
You’re very welcome! As you say that’s a very subjective question but my two cents would be focus more on composition and lighting and how they can elevate the story your trying to tell. In the hierarchy of what makes an image “cinematic” codec is at the very bottom to me! To me it’s script, performance, location, lights, lens then camera. But again that’s just me. Very best of luck with the project through!
