Hello, I have to say to you that you "converted me" to Marklin. I´m an official repair shop from Roco/Fleischmann here in Portugal, and to me Marklin... the third rail,... those turnouts... those curves... they are so different... but you converted me! Of course I´m not going to change all my layout but I have rejected a lot of work in Marklin layouts, due the "the confusion" it is to work with the Marklin Central. But your explanations are so clear, that since today, I´m going to help who needs, and better I´ll give them your link in KZbin. Thank you very much, because you are clear and very well understood. I´ll follow all your videos, no doubt. Thank you very much.

@ModelTrainFun
@ModelTrainFun 3 жыл бұрын
I believe that Märklin is easy for beginners and have always found it easy to make a layout when using the C-track. Price is subjective as you should also consider details, quality, durability, reliability and features (e.g. with/without decoder). Getting started with Märklin using a starter set is not expensive. But if the hobby really bites you, then a layout can be a big investment - no matter what manufactor... I like @the3rdrailchannel as it gives a good insight into older Märklin with analogue. Enjoy ;-)

Indeed - so far, I have not made a video on how to connect the CS3 to the PC. However, if you need to connect to the internet for updates, you can see that in the CS3 update video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/paG5Y4Foaqt5bs0 If you are looking to connect the PC to the internet, follow the same procedure. Then connect the PC to the same network router. Then use the IP address of the CS3 to access it. You can see it in the same video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/paG5Y4Foaqt5bs0 In the video you can see the IP address of the CS3 (192.168.0.49) - use the IP for your CS3. Note: if you cannot find the UK version , then you can use the EU/German version. However, you have to change the cable so you have a UK plug (or use and adapter). Check the picture to see how to the plug and wire looks. I am a little surprised you want to change from ECoS to CS3... the CS3 is great, but I understand that the ECoS is great as well. First the videos are excellent! I have been using an MS2 w a dozen trains (1 at a time lol) and Half dozen switches. So it was time to change. The CS3 and supply for my trains came today. All mfx gear. Can I simply attach the CS3 instead of the MS2 to discover my components? Meaning leave everything on the track where it is??? I’m sure a bit will be needed to tell it what switches are where. Thank you again!!!!
@ModelTrainFun
@ModelTrainFun Жыл бұрын
Hi Chas, Congratulations with your CS3 - I hope you will enjoy it! Yes - just connect the CS3 to the track instead of the MS2. If you had any kind of special box connected to the track - also remove this one. Connect power supply to CS3, then connect CS3 to track from. There are two connections on the CS3 to the track - one for the programming track "prog" and one for the main track. use the one for the main track. Make sure to connect the brown wire on the CS3 to "O" and the red to "B". Be careful because the two wires look a lot alike - both red, but one with a brown stripe. Turn on power, then you can go ahead and discover MFX. One thing that you must remember is to shutdown the CS3 from the menu, then manually turn off the power to the power supply when it is completely shut down (be patient). Note: you can connect the MS2 to the CS3 on the front of the CS3 as an extra controller. Be careful not to bend the pins when connecting. Enjoy ;-)

How does the CS3 know the layout and identify all the turnouts and signals? Does CS3 read the tracks in any way?
@ModelTrainFun
@ModelTrainFun 2 жыл бұрын
The CS3 can recognize accesories that use the MFX protocol. In this way it "reads the track" and discovers the turnout decoder is present, but does not know if it's a left or right turnout. You draw the layout as a simple overview on the screen and in this way tell the CS3 how the layout looks. As an example you can see here how the CS3 recognized the MFX turnout decoder: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZKyemuBgtFmrK8 Enjoy ;-)

Hello, may I please ask an opinion question. I am new to HO trains. My son has the Mobile Station 2 and accidentally put a crack in the display. How would you recommend getting a repair, considering the shipping cost back to Maerklin in Goeppingen?
@ModelTrainFun
@ModelTrainFun 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Timothy, that does not sound good, but unfortunately that is what happens I must admit I have not tried to send anything to Märklin for repair. I have heard that when you send something in it can take a very long time (6 months or more?) before you get it back. Consider getting a replacement in the meantime. I would recommend contacting your favorite model train shop to ask about options. However, considering the cost of shipping - depending on where you live it could get expensive - it might be cheaper to buy a new Mobile Station 2 (MS2). If you want another MS2, then consider another start set as you get more value for money and the extra MS2 would not really be that expensive. As a final thought - I am not sure how old your son is, but Märklin makes some controllers in the "Start Up" that (as I understand it) are sturdier. I have not tried it yet, but you can see it in the "Batman set" (Märklin 29828) and "freight set" (Märklin 29453). I do not have any experience with these controllers but ask your model train shop. Hope this helps.

OK. Thank you for your reply. My thought after the initial incident was "people break mobile phone screens every day. There must be a solution." My son is 8, and it was just kind of bad luck. He dropped the power supply plug while cleaning up, and it took a bad bounce and hit the controller. This at least tells me where to look for the next step. If i buy an modeltrain from an other brand will it then be compatible with an märklin train controler?
@ModelTrainFun
@ModelTrainFun 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you can buy from other brands, but it is important it supports the Märklin tracks. The CS3 can actually both do Märklin Motorola and DCC - even at the same time. However, the locomotives must be compatible with the Märklin 3-rail system. The locomotives must have a slider underneath. Roco, Brawa and Piko produce models for Märklin and mark them as AC Digital or 3-rail. As an example I am using a Roco locomotive for my "Soil Excavation Stuttgart 21" consist in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4a2foB_abFoldE Enjoy ;-)

Hello, I am forced to change DCC systems and would like to know if the Marklin CS3 will support Viessmann decoders and if the CS3 is a viable of option for N scale. I am running new Trix and Fleischmann locomotives. Thank you
@ModelTrainFun
@ModelTrainFun 2 жыл бұрын
H Robert, The Märklin Central Station 3 supports multiple protocols (MM, MFX and DCC), so you can control DCC locomotives as well. The CS3 can be used for N-scale as well. However, the CS3 outputs a voltage of 18-19V to the track, which is more than some N-scale decoders support (16V). I asked Märklin about the compatibility and they stated that this is not a problem for most modern decoders but can be an issue with some brands of N-scale decoders and older N-scale decoders. They pointed out that Minitrix decoders have no issue. I have not tried it myself. I have multiple Minitrix locomotives, but I do not remember trying them with the CS3 - I have used the Trix MS2 that came with a Minitrix starter set I have. Perhaps a good topic for a video ;-) Note: Some DCC decoders do not like Märklin Motorola (MM2) and MFX protocols, so you can change the settings in the CS3 to DCC only if you hit this issue. Hope this helps. Enjoy ;-)

@@ModelTrainFun That helps a great deal. Most of my DCC locos are less then 5 yrs old, so they should run fine. Hi Bo and thx for ur great videos, I have learned alot (after beeing away from modelrailroading for over 30 years)watching ur videos. I recently bought me the CS3+ w 60041 powersupply. I have used the MS2 after starting up ca 1,5 yrs ago. Its all MFx, all locos and all turnout decoders.w the MS2 all works just fine,but after starting w the CS3+ strange things happens. No loc on the track and all works fine,but when starting a loc w sound and etc the turnouts start blinking ( the lanterns) and the signal blinks. I have to shut it all down and start it up again to get control of the items,but same thing happens again. it works fine ( it seems) with no locos on the track. I have tried to give items new adresses in mfx before putting locs ontrack,I have tried to remove everything from the layout and the setup.I even but some tracks on the table in my living room with 1 turnout and 1 loc. still flashing when I start the loc. but it all went fine w the MS2.. how can this be? I dont understand what to do anymore.What can be wrong? pls help :)

Hi Oddvin, Great you got the CS3 - I hope you will enjoy it. My best guess is that the wires from the CS3 (or at the signals / lanterns) have been swapped. Check that Brown from the CS3 really go to "0" on the track and the red to "B" on the track. The color on the CS3 wires can be a little difficult to see. The brown is really just at stripe on the red wire. Also check that the Brown goes all the way to the Brown on the signals and lanterns - as well as the Red to Red. If this does not help let me know the model number of one of the more modern signals you have, then I can try to see if I can replicate. Enjoy ;-)

@@ModelTrainFun Hi and thx for the answer :) The signals I use are these: (70362+70393) x4; (70362+70394) x1; (70381+70412) x2, and 7x 70422.Turnouts are 24611 and 24612 (17) all w decoders 74462,motors 74491 and lanterns 74470.The lanterns are soldered on the decoders and a few are soldered on the maintracks. Im starting to think that this can be a problem here..? maybe I should light the lanterns from another source ?? just for testing today I took the tracks apart,all signals and turnouts and locs removed and deleted from the CS3 articles, freed up all adresses (I like to assign adr myself) added back just 1 turnout and 1 loc (37689) let the SC3 seach for mfx both loc and turnout,..all works fine untill I turn on the engine sound ,then the turnout starts blinking again. (This spesific turnouts light is soldered from its decoder) and when it starts flashing and blinking I lose control of the turnout..and yes the wires are correct I have doublechecked even the green plug to the SC3.

@@OddvinBidne I understand that you have tested a small setup with the CS3, small piece of track, the 37689 locomotive and 1 turnout with 74462 decoder, 74491 turnout mechanism and 74470 lantern - and nothing else connected? If that is the case and the CS3 is connected correctly to the track. Then double check the decoder is connected correctly to the track with Brown to 0 and Red to B. In addition to that the lantern must be connected to the decoder with the yellow lantern wire to the + on the decoder. You can see this in the manual on page 28: static.maerklin.de/damcontent/21/f9/21f96ba162e61a1e5f8caba72a3bfe431671170112.pdf To be honest - unsure if this is essential or just good practice when connecting the lantern to the decoder. Do you still have the issue? Is it possible to try the CS3 with small piece of track, the 37689 locomotive and one signal? Do you still have the issue? I am basically suggesting to troubleshoot by figuring out which item(s) causes the issues by having a small test setup where it is easier to verify what works - find the smallest setup possible with the issue. Could it be that the signal works ok (try with a couple if possible), but the issue is the lanterns soldered directly to the track or the decoder? I do not think it is insufficient power - perhaps the opposite? Out of curiosity - do you live in the USA? I seem to recall a special filter/dampner was needed in the old days... Hope this helps. Enjoy ;-)

Answer: Yes, when doing this you must remember that the current generation of digital locomotives may only be controlled with the white transformers, such as item numbers 6646 and 66470. Using older transformers (mostly with a blue housing) can lead to the destruction of the digital decoder. Hope this helps. Enjoy ;-)

Yes - you can run 3-rail MM(FX), MFX and DCC locomotives at the same time on 3-rail tracks on both the MS2 and CS3. The MS2 can only have MM(FX)/MFX or DCC accessories at the same time while you can mix on the CS3. But also remember there are two kinds of tracks: 2-rail and 3-rail. 2-rail locomotives does not run on 3-rail and vice versa. Both MS2 and CS3 also supports 2-rail tracks. As I understand it you can at the same time connect 2-rail tracks on the CS3. I have not tried this, but saw in a video on the Märklin channel with both H0- and N-gauge at the same time. So the CS3 can control all the DIGITAL model trains you like. Enjoy ;-)

You can look in the manual for the m84 on how to connect - check out page 14 and 15 in this manual: static.maerklin.de/damcontent/a5/7d/a57d1381cfd17d74e7434cb76db190ed1566485190.pdf As I stated below - I do not have much experience with analog layouts, so check out the facebook group and forum. hello and thanks for your explanations.Just one important question for me... (i earn an ESU Ecos 2), when you write "Automation for fully automatic control"... do you mean it can do as much as a software for automatic routes and driving of locos ? I will buy a CS3/CS3+ only if i am sure it can run all my locos with my S88 feeback contacts.. regards.
@ModelTrainFun
@ModelTrainFun 3 жыл бұрын
I distinguish between "train automation" and "fully automatic trains". Train automation is the ability to make some (a few) trains move around in a simple way automatically. Fully automatic trains is being able to have schedules, advanced operations (switching, shuttle operations, etc.), schedules or randomized control. The CS3 by itself is capable of train automation by creating rules - however, it is very difficult to share these rules across locomotives and/or signals. It is also hard to make routes, etc. If you want fully automatic trains this is usually through software on a computer (PC/Mac/Linux) connected to a device that can connect to the layout. The connecting device can be a CS3, but it would not really control the trains, but rather work as an interface between the computer software and the trains. If you want to have fully automatic trains I believe your current ESU Ecos is sufficient - just connect it to a computer and voila... I do not know how to do this, but check out the forums/support pages for the software you are interested in. I hope this helps - enjoy and let us know what you figure out you want to do ;-)

Ved du hvad forskellen på cs2 og cs3 er?
@ModelTrainFun
@ModelTrainFun 2 жыл бұрын
Not sure if there is a simple answer to "What is the difference between CS2 and CS3". To me it started with the first Central Station (CS1), which was the first control station by Märklin with a display and advanced capabilities. The CS1 was built by ESU for Märklin. The next step was the CS2 which was a greatly improved device both in shape and functionality. The CS2 was the basic building block of what the CS3 is today. The CS2 had advanced capabilities for controling locomotives, having layouts on the screen and the automation in form of events. The CS2 could be controlled from a mobile/cell phone using the accompanying app. To me it was a great device. The CS2 device grew to be a great device both was limits by the CPU and memory. The CS3 is a continuation of the CS2, but without the same amount of physical buttons as the CS2. The CS3 looks like the CS2, but in black instead of grey and without the physical buttons for the function keys. The enhancements include bettter CPU, more memory and a better display. In essence the CS3 is a hardware upgrade from the CS2 that generally allows for more advanced functionality all around. This has enabled Märklin to develop the CS3 further than the CS2. New functionality such as nicer track layout, more advanced events, nicer track diagrams, better built-in help, World of Operations and able to control the CS3 wireleslyy from any browser are some of the nice new features. Pleanty of interesting features. I see the CS3 as an evolution from CS2 - many new features. But the CS2 is still a capable device. If you just use the Central Station to control trains (no automation, directly on the device and standard track diagrams) or if you use automation from e.g. a PC, then the CS2 would probably be enough. To be honest I would recommend the CS3 if you can afford it. However, if you are on a tight budget and you are offered a cheap CS2 I would consider it. Märklin has been good at doing a lot of development on the CS3 in the last years with the annual update. As I understand it there has been no or only very little updates to the CS2. I seem to recall that Märklin had some what is new for the CS3 when it was launcehd. However, I cannot find it... Hope this helps. Enjoy ;-)

Engelsk manual her: streaming.maerklin.de/public-media/anleitungen/CS3_Manual_EN_final-lo.pdf

Hi Yvon, Yes the CS3 supports French. You can choose it during first boot or change in the settings using System->System->CS3-> Settings CS3->Language. If you are talking about the channel - unfortunately I do not speak French very well, but you can change the language on the subtitles to get KZbin autotranslation - check it out here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWq9nZqlndqef7s Hope this helps! Enjoy ;-) Bo

Hi Walter, not quite sure why there is strikeout in your comments? I didn't even know that could be done - however, I am positive I did not do it. Enjoy ;-)

@ModelTrainFun

Takker - håber at videoerne hjælper. Thanks - hope the videos help. You can create a contact track out of any normal C-track (straight and curved). You are not destroying the track - it has been built to support this. After the track has been modified it can be used with the s88 for train detection. I intend til cover these subjects in upcoming videos. Enjoy and have fun ;-)

Very good tutorial but god, it looks like a clunky, non intuitive, device. I have a basic MS2 for now which I hated back 12y ago for the same reasons, got used to it. But hey, including power supply, the CS3+ is a $800 spent. For that mess of a device, designed by IT geaks for geaks. Hard to swallow and I will put all my plans of expension on pause...

Hi Jerome, Glad you like the video! Indeed the Central Station 3 (CS3) is a complex device and can do many things. In later versions Märklin have introduced a simplified UI to hide some of the complex functionality. You can get a peek here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hGO6mJZtnNSFZrM You can also use your tablet or cell phone to control the trains with even simpler UI. Check that out here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oIGnZXqOprSmfM0 However, the CS3 is a big investment equivalent to 1-3 locomotives and the MS2 might be more than enough for you. I must admit I do not find the CS3 unintuitive - not as nice as some phone/tablet apps you find nowadays, but still ok. The great thing is that Märklin continously improve it. Enjoy ;-) Bo

Thanks for having spent the time to provide these details ! It took me a while to get familiar with my MS2 so I can't even contemplate how long I would need to master the use of a MC3. Sad reality of a niche market, there are not millions of options out there...will continue to knowledge up and will make an informed decision then !
