As a person who has all the ebook copies, heres my recommendation: 1. Prealgebra and arithmetic - Elementary and Intermediate Algebra by Larson and Hostetler 2. Algebra (college, intermediate, basic etc) - use Blitzer’s exclusively. Best algebra books out there. 3. Precalculus - either by Sullivan’s or Stewart’s. Both equally good. My personal choice is Stewart’s 4. Calculus - Use Thomas’ exclusively. This book has slightly more breadth and depth compared to Stewart’s Hope this can help you save money 😊

For Brazilian folks (or anyone who speaks Portuguese) who like me don't have much time to go through various books, I recommend going with "Pré-Cálculo: Operações, Equações, Funções e Trigonometria", written by Francisco Magalhães Gomes. In it, the author starts from a very low mathematical level. There are also tons of problems and you can find on the Internet a PDF file with the answers to every single one of them.

I'm currently a 2nd year undergrad student, and the question I've been wanting to ask the most is: How can you *maintain* your curiosity towards subjects? I did sometimes get curious about what I learn in school, wanting to explore more until it makes sense to me. And I find those are the moments where I learn the best and are the most enjoyable, everything just felt frictionless and learning genuinely felt more interesting than games, social media, etc. But those moments are always very short, like a short burst of energy, and after an hour or two I just go back to my usual lazy self.

Hi Math Sorcerer! It would be interesting if you could do a review of the UK A-level Math and Further Math syllabus, and offer your comparison to US high school and college-level courses. I'm studying in the UK and like to read math textbooks, often from your reccomendations with US-based students in mind - so it's always interesting to note the differences in timing and order we learn things, and the names which concepts go by. For example I'm studying linear algebra alongside applied calc (but they're not separate courses, all under the umbrella of Further Maths), and we were taught Cramer's rule to find the inverse of a matrix and not the classic Gaussian elimination method, though the textbook doesn't call these methods by their common names. Love your videos :)

Larson also has an interesting beginners book called "Calculus I with Precalculus", which introduces the precalc concepts as they arise when being Calculus. Sheldon Axler also has some great precalc books that focus more on explanations better than any other books I've seen. Even more than Blitzer! Does it do a better job with orders of operations regarding the translation from implicit to explicit notation? The viral confusion of trying to apply the middle school mnemonics to implicit notation could be eliminated with a better foundation in the implicit/explicit notation differences. My 1960s edition of Intermediate Algebra For Colleges has a short, but important explanation of factors and coefficients in implicit statements that probably needs to be stressed a bit more today. This comment could possibly apply to your calculator video, as the lack of implicit operations capability in most calculators is part of the "viral video" misunderstandings.

In short, which Blitzer book - "College Algebra Essentials" or "Intermediate Algebra for College Students" Thanks again.
@brun35368 ай бұрын
@@P90Camper I understand now. I ended up doing a bit of research earlier today. I've found that each of Blitzer's textbooks is suited to people at different stages along their algebra learning path. Here's the list from beginner to advanced level: 1. Introductory Algebra for College Students This book assumes that you have very little prior knowledge of algebra, introducing you to basic concepts and driving them home to ensure you are confident applying them. 2. Intermediate Algebra for College Students Builds upon the material from Introductory Algebra and further strengthens your grasp of the core concepts while introducing slightly more complex topics (factoring, rational expressions and the like). I've used this one, and it was great! 3. College Algbera This book assumes you have a solid understanding of intermediate algebra and delves into more advanced topics like functions, trigonometry, conic sections and more. It is a fitting preparation for many college STEM courses IMO. 4. College Algebra Essentials As the name suggests, it's a streamlined version of College Algebra. It would be ideal for students who need to have the core concepts introduced to them but who don't wish/need to delve deeply into them. Still a great book though. The general consensus (which I agree with) is that Blitzer's books are some of, if not the best, for learning algebra! I would recommend picking up a copy that seems right for you from your library or online if available. If the material is well-known or too challenging, go up or down a book to find which best suits your current knowledge level and future goals. I hope that helps! Best of luck with your learning journey!

People will think me old fashioned, but I think learning how to use trig tables doesn't seem to be taught anymore. We are one CME away from going old school, remember that. Knowing how to use tables and where to find them is important. The same can be said for slide rules. We were taught to use them 40 years ago, even though we all had scientific calculators.
@thomasblackwell95078 ай бұрын
Still have my slide rule and book of logs.
@programaths8 ай бұрын
Context. We learned to use the tables and rulers in primary school because they were late to the party. And the use of tables was widespread. If you wanted to know your train schedule, you also had to look at timetables. Also, use of various indexes. I still have a book where the index gives you the page number, the quadrant, and the sub-quadrant. Most people can't use the book!!! It's like a puzzle for them. Even more stupid, there are "random" numbers on the border of the pages...those indicate where the map continues 😅 Even looking up in a dictionary is challenging for people. I saw people "browse" the dictionary and explained how they could get very close to the correct page if they knew their alphabet and could think of Scrabble. As a kid, I would always start in the middle, then try to take the right half and split until I had a few pages to work with. The teacher would then explain how to be faster by considering that some letters have few words and that you can try to guess where that word would be. It sounds stupid, but it was an essential skill in primary school. The teacher always pointed to the dictionary and asked to read aloud ^^ And sometimes, during read-aloud, the teacher would stop us and ask us what we read. Then, ask about difficult words and ask to use the dictionary. So the teacher didn't have to waste too much time. If you were too slow to look up, you would be taught repeatedly, and the dictionary would become your close friend. The very same with tables ^^ Fast forward to today, kids don't exercise those skills, and there were many instances I had to guide people to use train timetables! They do like kids, reading from the first panel to the last 🤦🏻♂️ And when you step away, it's indicated if it's workdays or weekends. Then, getting closer, you see the hours in bold. Then, in smaller prints, you have the minutes. And people are confused because they don't string that information together. They miss the bigger picture. Even recently, I saw students challenged by z-score tables. Even synoptic tables with rain per m² are harsh to read... But even worse, synoptic maps! You would think that a highly abstracted map would help since your only concern is finding the start and end stations and then following the lines to find the suitable exchanges. Nope, too difficult ^^ So, it's expected that most people can't use schematics. All the people who had to use log and trigonometric tables and the dictionary and the atlas were given a precious gift!
