I remember that umbra can turn darker after some time because it contains iron oxide and manganese clay and the manganese is interacting with the oil. Well, I mostly use it for a light underpainting and practice pieces. I think I can sit for 5 minutes and mix an imitation if needed, but it’s not as practical it’s slower in Oxidation, not the same every time and is annoying to mix it before I can paint. Mostly I didn’t mix it and try without it. I end up using more different colours in a piece than I started with. I now want to make a mixing sheet with different brown mixtures without manganese 😸

Very informative and entertaining. 🙂 I'm not a beginner myself, but I was still able to pick up a few things from the video. I think you're the first person I come across that recommended natural umber as a shade of brown to start with. Some time ago I found out that natural umber is most practical for me, when it is the only brown in my palette. I can take it in a variety of directions and make it look like imitations of natural sienna, burnt umber and burnt umber. On the other hand, it is much more difficult for me to create a natural umber from a burnt sienna and mix in yellow and blue. Otherwise, I sometimes use a modified Velasquez palette, so instead of Light Ochre, Burnt Sienna and Ultramarine. I use Natural Sienna which is more transparent and a bit more muted, Burnt Siena PBr7 is not quite as reddish as PR101 and Prussian Blue PB27 because it is more muted than ultramarine.

Thanks so much ! I appreciate that. I think color is so unique to every artist and beginners should only start with a super limited pallet. I normally have Raw umber, Burnt Sienna and raw sienna on my pallet. I probably don’t need the burnt sienna as much, but I like having it. I always make my blacks with a combo of ultramarine, raw umber and alizarine crimson. I appreciate your feedback. I’m having fun making these KZbin videos and hopefully they will benefit other artist. We all do things a little different and I feel like I’m always picking up new things from other artist ❤️🙏

That's exactly one of the great things about us artists. That's why I like watching videos about material, even if I have some experience, because it's always exciting how different the material and the associated artists are from each other, which is the underlying idea of a certain selection. I sometimes have fun with it by looking at a few pictures by an artist and writing down my guesses about what is probably used and then I read the associated blog article or watch the video. Sometimes I'm quite wrong with the material and am completely amazed at what is actually used, or else I'm relatively close to it. It also inspires me to try new things and I learn a lot from it. My art ist a wonderful kind of mosaic with my own unique pieces and unique pieces from all over the world from different artists that I came across and influenced me 😸.

My palette often looks like that of a beginner who can't decide, usually only 3-4 colors plus white and often other colors per picture😹 Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪😸

@@askialuna7717 I keep my Palette pretty simple too. I have a warm and cool version of the primaries and some earth tones. But I keep my pallet the same for every painting. I keep this consistency so that I don't think much about color while I'm painting. I like a Broken Color approach, so my main focus is just on Value and I think in terms of Warm and Cool. Thank you so much for your comments. I really apprecaite it. And Greetings from Florida :)
