Getting Started With the Game Dwarf Fortress On Your Mac

macmost.com/e2067 Dwarf Fortress is a complex strategy game where you control a group of dwarves as they build an underground fortress and mine the area. You can play it on your Mac but it is tricky to install and get working in macOS Catalina. Then you are going to want to add a custom tileset to make it look decent. I go through these setup steps, and then show you how to get starting with playing the game.

If anybody is still having trouble with the white screen error, go into the "init" file and change the print mode to "STANDARD"

I got into the init file, but after that I´m lost. Can ypu explain any further? Plus, I can´t even close the application, I have to reboot the Mac, is it normal?

I ended up finding it. to to the folder with everything>data>init>scroll down until you see [PRINT MODE:2D] and change it to [PRINTMODE:STANDARD]

My MacBook Air is running osx, and I followed ur steps exactly, and it does run, bur the screen is entirely white and I have no idea why. It plays the audio and runs through the intro and menu, but I can’t like actually see anything. Any info is much appreciated.

I had an issue with keyboard input being super laggy after maximizing the window. Found out that you have to set the PRINT_MODE setting to FRAME_BUFFER in data/init/init.txt

Hi, thanks for your video ! I still have a problem tho : when I download the folder from Bay12games, it contains a df file but in a TextEdit format, not an exec format. Do you know why this happens ? I've tried downloading older versions of Dwarf Fortress, and I always get the TextEdit format... I figured it was the reason my game wouldn't launch, even after following your instructions

It has a .txt extension? The one I get is just "df" with no extension.

@@macmost The file in the folder just says "df" with no extension, but the icon is a TextEdit one (just a blank white page, not a black square with exec written on the top left) and Finder tells me that it is a TextEdit extension... It contains coding though, but I can't get it to launch the game, even though I've tried many methods found on the net, including many using the terminal. Maybe it's because of the Catalina update, I've noticed it messed up Wine too

@@macmost Dude I did it ! The problem was that I was using WinZip to unzip the app, and it converted (I don't get why) the exec into a TextEdit. I rewatch your video and noticed you were using Archive Utility, so I used it to unzip the app... and it work ! Thanks for your answers man, I can finally use this game !

Hey! When i drag the folder after the cd plus space it says no such file or directory.

Is there a space character in the path? If so, remember to surround the path with quotes or use a \ before the space.

I've got a bug where the game loads and music plays, but the screen is white. I can press down 4 times and enter to quit, so it's on the title screen and the input works, but the graphics don't show. I tried vanilla and with phoebus tileset. Any suggestions? They web doesn't provide much.

@@nathanielanacta9330 I downloaded the Lazy Newb Pack for Mac. It didn't work, HOWEVER, the DF file within the LNP did work. So by playing DF through the downloaded noob pack, i was able to get it running haha

Hey. This was a year ago and after the Mac updated ( around January) I haven’t been able to play dwarf fortress. Is there a way around this? I’ve deleted everything and tried this method again but I get the “access denied” response.

Sorry, but I haven't playing a while. You should be able to get around the access denied if you use that technique, though. Keep trying or maybe search for someone who has recently installed it.
