The Hoof GP is a channel here on KZbin. He is a Scottish man and him and his brother in law, they are cow hoof trimmers. Cows kept on soft ground can get extra problems. A great channel, very much humor and knowledge. They should know all about your breed of cows as well....being scottish and all... :)

Yes! Being a faithful Hoof GP viewer I've been concerned about hoof health since we knew the cows were arriving at Gold Shaw Farm - but I never get to comment until 700 comments or more in, and I was so hoping someone would point that out - hoof trimming and maintenance wasn't something I was even aware was a thing - and Morgan and his Lady haven't ever had cows so maybe it's something they're also not aware of - thank you for bringing up such a good channel to serve as a cow foot health resource.

I have highland cattle and I can tell you they will not be happy in your barn in the winter. I have a 3 sided building they can go in and out of as they please. I was surprised how much they didn’t use the shelter in the winter. They prefer to be out in the pasture. It’s good to have shelter available if they choose.

I have a cow story. I was in high school and driving home with my best friend. Passing a neighbors house, we both looked at the very large bull standing at the fence line near the road. Five foot wire fence. Next breath and the bull was up in the air and over the fence! He started grazing on the tall grass along the ditch. My friend and I both just stared with our mouths hanging open, eyes like saucers. Swear on my life, 100% true story. That bull cleared that fence from a standstill. One of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen.

Hi Morgan! we know its your deal and you want to figure it out for yourself haha, but alot of people are (also) suggesting that you either try to feed Pablo and the other cats first at the barn, then feed Toby, or feed him with his own bowl beside Toby at the same. There is a heirarchy going on with those guys too! Toby being first alpha (and also "favorite" of yours, and therefore fed first), then Pablo has always been his number 2. Chicken/ducks/geese 3rd, then Ginny and Molly are last and also under Pablo. You are also following this heirarchy naturally during feeding time. Normally the dog/cat house is Pablo's bedding area with Toby yeah? So pushing Pablo off the fence (while harmless of course) will only really confuse him, doubt his position, and possibly cause more hissy fits between the cats. Even the fighting between molly and ginny are jostling for positions. I've owned lots of cats and its very interesting to observe their behaviours. It might be easy with a kitten to train this way (pushing off fence, remove from situation), but not so much success with an older cat. Pablo sees himself as equal-ish to Toby, sleeping and working with him, so instead of "punishment" because cats really dont understand that, perhaps feeding him at the same time, side by side with his own dish, or before hand is probably the best route to try. You changed your tactics with the cows and its working! You can absolutly do it with the barn cats too. Good luck!

I know from my uncle's cattle farm that hay put in a "Hay Ring Metal Feeder" keeps your hay dryer, keeps the goof ball males from tearing up the bales & trampling them into mud, so there's a minimal loss of food & if you want something on the ground to keep the mud down buy straw. You will eventually need a Squeeze Chute for veterinary care: injection sites are accurate, pregnancies are checked, insecticide applications, reduces animal stress & keeps farmers safe, also. Safety first with half ton animals. Good luck. 🐮

The cattle will rub themselves on those posts. You can get brushes to staple around the posts that will scratch them better and allow them to groom themselves. Hopefully those posts are sturdy enough to handle how rough those cattle will be on them. That would be my big concern. Are those structural posts holding up the whole thing?

@hola yes, punishing a cat usually doesn't work. They respond better to positive reinforcement. Punishment can backfire. If looks could kill, Morgan would be dead from the look Pablo gave him when he pushed Pablo off the fence post. I have had many cats (indoor) over the last 50 years. I would shut Pablo in the barn with his food when getting ready to feed Toby. Cats can be very stubborn and Pablo is not going to stop trying to eat with Toby no matter how many times he gets pushed away. Physically punishing Pablo even lightly may damage the relationship with Morgan.

i think the cattle are very hardy and will be happy outside even in snow and ice. Have their food and water in that yard while the barn is available for shelter which they will probably use only in extreme weather. The more they are in the barn the more of a mushy mess the ground will become with poo and pee. Maybe your duckhouse trick of just putting straw on top every few days will work. Outside they will also plough up the wet ground so footrot is something you have to watch out for. Make your yard as large as possible. A portable fence as a windshelter from those cold northerlies is also a good idea for the yard
@ThorHavenFarm
@ThorHavenFarm 3 жыл бұрын
With the Highlands you actually don't need to use the barn. We are zone 4 and our Highland hardly ever go into the shelter we built them. Only on the coldest windy days and the odd hot summer day. Our are can usually be found under a tree or lounging in the sun or on the hay when it's even 25 below freezing

Morgan, in my opinion... You are going to need a hard surface(concrete) for the cattle feeding area, some way away from the water supply. Also without a hard/dry flooring under the barn you are going to end up with a swamp there,not a good idea for the health of the cows and it will really smell something quite unique. Toby and Pablo were not originally friends because Pablo was only friends with Lil Barn Cat. But Toby really wanted to be friends with Pablo. When Lil Barn Cat became a house cat, Pablo became lonely, and eventually Toby wore him down and they became friends. That's when the food sharing started. Toby didn't mind Pablo eating his food, and it seems like a bonding between them. It's good but also not so good. Good because they're BFF now, but not so good because Pablo, as Morgan said, becomes a victim of his own success. He has his cat food, and also managed to kill many rodents, which he also eat, and then there's Toby's food. So Pablo gains weight, and Morgan is just trying to stop making an overweight Pablo, that's why he tries to stop Pablo from eating Toby's food. I understand Morgan completely, but I love to see this little morning drama taking place between the three of them when it's food time and the cat person in me always root for Pablo.

Dear Morgan, About raising animals for meat, I apprecriate your philosophy about having an emotional connection to them, giving them the freeedoms fro suffering hunger and disease and lack of shelter and freedom from stress and anxiety. In short, making it possible for them to live a good life on earth as other farmers say, only having one bad day. All of your animals have emotions just like humans do, we can see it in the love or attachment and bonding of the flock and herd. and the bond between mothers and their young. and of course the close bonding of your Toby and you and the barn cats.💕

Something that instantly came to my mind, when you showed that electricity box in the barn, was that you absolutly need to cattle proof that. Cows are super curies animals and will look at everything. Anything thats in that barn and in their reach will get ripped off and destroyed. At home we had some cattle rip off a water pipe which they weren`t supposed to get to and floodet the entire barn. Be carefull and always have that in the back of your mind while working in your barn. And cows love to scrach on things, so i hope the wooden posts in the barn can carry the weight of them rubbing against them. Maybe you should get them a brush, cows absolutly love those. Don`t get me wrong, i dont want to critecise you in any way, i just love watching your videos and i want everything to work out. You also said once in a video that you dont wan`t to give them grain or pelets or things like that, and thats fine if you dont want to, but you could give them some from time to time, when you call them or want somethimg from them. Its like a treat to them and could make them easier to work with. good luck on in the future with everything.

OR, OR you can add titles, like Duchess or if you get to Q, you can name one Queen, or Queen Elizabeth or something lol. But I suppose you could give them different patterns for different generations, like tv show casts, aristocracy, mythology, gems, etc.

It’s actually pretty important to keep Pablo out of Toby’s food, for Pablo’s sake. Dog food is not good for cats. Doesn’t have some essential nutrients cats need. If Pablo fills up on dog food and doesn’t eat enough of his own - plus his natural prey - it could hurt him. I knew someone whose cat went blind from eating dog food without enough cat food. It was really tragic.

Chickens, cattle, pigs, the man KNOWS his stuff. Your cattle can create so much compost during the winter. The books explain everything and also have detailed plans for all sorts of movable tractors. I know you like doing things yourself, but he only is supplying the knowledge you still have to do it yourself. Have an interesting Fall/Winter. 😀❤️

Love your enthusiasm and hard work. A couple of suggestions-you have burdock in that paddock of weeds. Remove that before putting your hairy cattle in there or they will be a mess of burrs. Your water-If I were you, I would use a submersible water tank heater and a short section of regular hose. Hard to tell how close your hydrant is, but if it’s 25 ft or less from the tank, you can simply hook up the hose, fill the tank, disconnect the hose , and drain it before you put it away. I have a couple of spike nails on my wall and coil the drained hose and hang it until I need it again. Your hose will not freeze as long as you drain it after each use. There’s no water to freeze. I think a heated hose is in expense and a bother that you really don’t need to have. But I’m sure you will need a water tank heater or your tank is going to freeze. I am in upstate New York and that’s what I find I need to do for my horses. Works great.
