I do love the American scale of age a 1950s house in considered ancient whereas the house I grew up in, a terraced house in Norfolk England was easily from the 1700's.

Those are citrus rats.... they love to eat the seeds out of citrus. If you can do without the citrus trees, it will help control the rats

Make sure you seal around the litter box...you will have a rat/mouse invasion in your house.
