Getting to know Color Variables

Nice idea, but without the ability to use colour variables as a symbol override, I'm not sure I see the benefit? This just seems like a universal colour swatch system, similar to InDesign - edit the swatch and updates everywhere.

You still can’t really use them with symbols and/or text styles can you? At least I don’t see the option to change the color for certain text or shape layers in my places symbols even though I used color variables on them…

@Sketch As others aready mentioned: without being able to use color variables as symbol overrides, they remain useless. Also, when will we finally see Text Style variables?

at present this variable cannot be export sketch cloud prototype, right? so we cannot see this variable name in sketch cloud INSPECTOR, right?

Is there a way for a user of a shared library to change Color Variables and apply it only on the file he is editing?

what's the difference with the Layer Style?

Currently, I use the layer style to manage our color design system. I don't get the difference with this Color Variables, except the advantages to get linked with typography style.

I added some Color Variable in order and it added randomly. I can't organize them or delete them. Am I missing something?

you can delete it in canvas mode.

Agree with Ryan. It seems like the same functionality as Layer Style. However, I do think placing it in the color panel makes the feature easier to use.

Ting Yasuhara true but now you won’t need text styles for different colours, happy days!

@@christunbridge1758 How would you set that up? I still need different colours for all the text styles. If I change a colour of a text style, it marks the text style with an "*", meaning it is changed but not updated

Are color variables available in Figma? If so, is it worth the switch?

@@oscardeee Of course it is available in Figma since day one. Both Sketch and Figma are good apps. I recommend Figma because it is web-based. Small file sizes and easier to work in teams at the same time on the same file. Sketch can't do that without the help of Abstract (Not recommended for design systems used by a team)
