Oh man, hearing them rant about Machinima is so cathartic for anyone that was regularly browsing KZbin around the 2010-ish era, and this is coming from an outsider that had no interaction with the network at all. Just being a young edgy gamer type and seeing this huge channel putting out so many hilarious videos without realizing they were just sourcing from actually talented content creators, it was amazing. I subscribed immediately when I saw Grand Theft Auto 4 montages, mostly done by Ben Buja, and just falling in love with the false concept that this was a big collaborative company with hilarious people making good videos. For some reason a subscription felt more important back then, like you were openly supporting a thing you enjoyed when there were far less users on the site (remember when everyone's subscriptions were public on their channel pages, along with KZbin friends and public channel comments? Man, I remember seeing a lot of depraved shit on there, mostly from my own friends after we found each other's channels and started messing with each other.) Then after subscribing and seeing a new video literally every 5 minutes in my subscriptions box was the big hint that this wasn't a "real" channel, it was some monstrosity robot just feeding into the Call of Duty, GTA, Minecraft, Skate 3, and Halo crowd, while any content deviating away from that would get dislike bombed by children like myself. Even more professionally filmed live action stuff like RedLetterMedia's Half in the Bag would go up on Machinima and kids would storm it for not being Minecraft. It was so weird seeing all these KZbinrs, some that would later become huge, not really understanding the site and getting suckered into that stuff because they either had their own website to fall back on, or just got duped into it like discussed in this video. And then you had me just waiting for the next GTA 4 Funny Moments through literally thousands of uploads without realizing I could have sourced the actual content creator's channel and had a way more concise experience over there. I'm genuinely sorry so many people got scammed into that shitty business back in the day, but I'm glad that they're free to talk about it now that the MCN concept is dead and probably illegal (or at least a huge TOS violation), seriously fuck them for putting creators through that. I seriously don't remember that much of a channel's content getting deleted, and much of it lost forever. There's still some highlighted videos on there in my memory that I remember enjoying with no surviving reuploads. What a vacuum, I still haven't fully grasped the concept of newer KZbin users that are completely unaware of that channel, it was such a titan that felt like it had its reach in every corner, and thankfully we came to realize how damaging it was.

Even as an outsider, I knew how bad machinma was. I know they talked about it in the season finale podcast episode because for Machinma it was predatory to get this 15 year old kid with 10k subs and get all of their money and of course they’re not going to talk to them. Their biggest clients have 20-40 million subs. I know a lot of people had to threaten league action. But they would do the 30 day grace period to fuck them over. So they would wait until the last day to ask the lawyer for more clarification and stuff. They were horrible. Fuck Machinma dude.

I doubt Cory remembers this, but I was at Philly Pico Day in 2019 and I got to play a little bit of Nightmare Cops at the NG Office (I even drew on the wall!), it was so endearing just hearing Cory talk about the game and seeing how much progress was made on it. It's definitely something I look forward to, I know these things take time, and you can clearly see the passion dedicated towards it. Hope you guys don't get injured tailbones from sitting and working all day. Also I don't know how far you guys are going to get into Sonic Heroes but a bit of a note, besides the flight height and distance cap, Fly is stupidly overpowered. Get your Fly characters to Level 3 and you can take care of most enemies with the basic Thunder Shoot. Even the final Egg Emperor boss can be done in less than 3 minutes if you spam the Fly character on them because they'll automatically target the weakspots. Source: I just beat this game last night and it was a miserable experience.

All those things machinima did with bad contract terms and exploiting young people not knowing the value of their work would probably make a court decide those contracts they created were unconscionable. Those contracts were potentially unenforceable and could have been challenged in court but litigation is expensive so a beginner animator/youtuber probably would not have the resources to challenge it easily.

The best advice I can give as someone also getting into game development, keep your scope small and create a game design document prior to starting development. I've got to admit I envy the freedom something like Tails Gets Trolled has. I spent all day working on placeholder game assets that nobody is ever going to see and honestly even with the unnecessary level of work that went in I still sort of hate that they're not production quality. Obviously the creator puts a lot of work into their comic but they're not hung up on every panel looking perfect. Even if I tried to do quick sketches I'd get caught up on making it consistently inconsistent.

When I started animating for my youtube channel I was trying to get a 2-4 minute animations out every friday. I did it for a little while, but then I also started seeing spots in my eyes like Cory. It freaked me out and when I went to get them checked out by a doctor, she said it was likely caused by stress and overworking. I completely stopped animating for a while, but the spots lasted for like 6-8 months after. I'm all good now, but I'm more conscious about working smarter & just upload whenever it's ready. I think working hard is great, but I learned my lesson about overdoing it. Whatever it is you may do, look after yourselves everyone. Stress is no joke.

actually, the new “chinese fred” was sort of a multi channel ARG that ended with Lucas cruikshank going to taiwan to free the real fred, who was being held prisoner by the Chinese company he sold the channel to. it was pretty neat.

Since this is kind of on topic, Dexter Manning (the English guy in Sanity not Included and from what I remember did not have a happy conclusion with Lyle and Cory) also went into making a game these past few years. He actually managed to release it a year ago I think but from the occasional updates it just sounded so awful from the production, money sink and dealing with logistics. All the best with Bowlbo and Nightmare Cops guys!

I really liked sanity not included back in the day! I had no idea the creation process behind it was that nightmarish and that Machinima was awful, I just kind of noticed one day that I wasn't seeing any content from them and forgot about it all
