What people need to realize is that the image from the cats brain isn't what the cats vision is like, it just looks bad because its an interpretation from brain waves and theres a lot of information lost in converting brain waves into a digital image.

Also, most people doesn't even seem to be aware that more and more of the "science " being taught in school as well as elsewhere is often refereed to as popular science/popsci. People in our days should've learned to distinguish between this and actual science. But guess we'll have to wait a while longer for this to become obvious...

No that surprising, honestly. We humans visually interpret many animal faces and objects as human faces, we even do it with our cars, to an extend, and it would be silly to think that "less evolved" brains wouldn't do this to an extend. Also they better not have made that cat unable to live a normal life by inserting wires into its brains. That and fixating the cat without sedation would be animal cruelty.
@ivyme57837 жыл бұрын
Central Intelligence Agency cats literally see humans as strange giant cats but nothing more (and treat us as cats), while of course humans recognise that cats, dogs, rabbits and other non-human animals are different species. Same is for dogs - they know we are different species unlike cats
@centralintelligenceagency90037 жыл бұрын
Iva Ivkata "Same is for dogs - they know we are different species unlike cats." I strongly disagree. You are projecting human thoughts into an animal, a dog does not know anything like we humans do. Sure, a dog can be conditioned, but that does not imply knowledge. Then, rewatching this footage makes it pretty clear to me that they are bullshitting hard. With the low resolution of that video and the blur, it is impossible to use it as evidence how a cat sees the world.
@ivyme57837 жыл бұрын

It looks more like like a combination of low resolution, non-optimal refresh rate of the monitor, well-place noise elements at a specific frame and subjectivity. It could also point to that cats may have a version of pareidolia. If at a certain frame, because of the low res, the cat seem to recognise some cat-like feature, it doesn't mean that they transpose cat-like features on us. We don't recognise random objects or :-) as having human-like features. We are just wired to easily recognise faces because of our social nature. We can see faces in things that aren't. We can also recognise how realistic or not a face may be.

(I use Google Translate for smooth communication.) If I see only the captured screen, it may be true that the cat recognize the person as a cat. I remember watching this clip a few years ago and being intrigued by the cat-like image that was outputted from the cat seeing a human face. It makes you wonder what realm of the cat's mind has been actually been tapped into here. I'm no expert, but it appears to me that the output image displays the cat's translation of the human face into that of a cat's for the sake of face perception; perhaps the cat is reading the expressions that the man is making. If that were the case, then this machine would obviously have the ability to read the cat's mind on a profound level. I also remember reading an article recently about how many humans find kittens to be 'cute' because their facial expressions remind them of a human baby's. Perhaps that's what the image would translate to if a human was shown images of a kitten.

There is no way to prove, other then being there. But for the sake of argument, this is very impressive. Actually seeing how an animal interprets a human being, cat-like as the narrator said, opens many theoretical doors. Not to mention the fact of how the brain processes data, analog as the noise suggests, and how it can be applied or translated to our digital technology. If we can learn how animals view the world, we can theoretically "talk" to them so they actually understand, rather then pretend the animal understands. Imagine a world where we have a sign language for dogs and cats.

'Hardcoded' indicator in species, to indicate a 'face'. Probably a place of a high neuron activity and importance. Face should have a much more processing done on it, emotions, eye movements, etc. So the brain scans for this features and if it matches it thinks it's a face and picks up it from environment. Same as in human brains. Example : The thing in brackets is not a face [ :) ] those are two dots and a curly bracket. Same goes here : [ :-) ] two dots, dash, curly bracket.
@finefinefine11 жыл бұрын
I don't think that necessarily rules out a slightly different perception. It might even be something that is more pronounced in animals that have been domesticated and selectively bred over centuries. If you have a cat whose perception asserts certain familiar characteristics in humans, then one might guess that that cat would get along better and/or display more desirable behavior(from a human standpoint).
@jacobthelioneater10 жыл бұрын
I'll call bullshit on stuff like this as long as the experimenters know what the image is beforehand. The video doesn't go into depth about what the resarchers did to 'construct' the image, but it likely involved a bit of over-zealousness and over-interpretation on the researchers part.
@JohnDoe-me9ml9 жыл бұрын
It's not "bullshit", but I do agree with you that what they've shown us here may not be as impressive as what we might be being led to believe. If they could do arbitrary reconstruction without the researchers themselves knowing what the cat was looking at, then we'd have something very impressive. Still, it's moving in the right direction, and even just being able to do this in itself is pretty cool regardless.
@KuraIthys7 жыл бұрын
That's true, it's very much in the interpretation. But with enough examples of what a 'known' image looks like to that cat, they could infer unknown images too. There's still the open question of whether this actually lines up with what the cat itself experiences.
@unidentifiedbiomass41066 жыл бұрын
jacobthelioneater But there is nothing to bullshit, this is an image from the cats brain. It is not seeing the spooky face; the face is made up of things the cat focuses on.

I understand that you want to see more. Experiments like this have tried to eliminate as many variables as possible, including what the cat sees. They have to start somewhere, to prove a little, before advancing their research and methodologies. What they've managed to do here seems pretty groundbreaking to me, even 5 years after your comment. I'd love to see the published research findings.

Do you even know how brain waves work and how it correlates to create an image from what our eyes are reflecting? The image was generated from thr waves of the cat's brain. Did you fail grade school or something?

Just because someone has the power and ability to do terrible things doesn't mean it's the right thing to do. Cats, dogs, and horses are just as much "sentient beings" as we are. The brains function the same way. They dream, get depressed, respond to psychiatric medication the same way we do. The only difference is that we have more memory and this gives us the abiltiy to make sense of complicated things. There is no other significant difference between a human and any other mammal.
