I don't think you noticed it, but Jack actually did something incredible at the end of the movie. He saved Will's life by helping him (Will) stab the heart, thus granting him immortality and saving Will. It goes to show how much Jack has grown to care for Will and become a nicer person in general, and in a truly selfless act, he throws away the opportunity to be immortal and sail the seas forever to save Will's life instead.

I think that's the thing about Jack that many miss. While he's a pirate, he is a good man. The first movie, I don't think he ever truly intended to hand over Will. He's always playing chess, and while it seems he's betrayed someone at first...it turns out it was a ploy to fool his enemies while not actually betraying an ally. In a weird way. Even when he had the moment to betray everyone to the Kraken, he still came back because deep down he couldn't go through with it. I think that's why some are super loyal to him, while others like Barbossa can't stand him. xD

What I love about the trilogy is how good the writing is. With all 3 stories interwoven and connecting. The jokes carrying over. They are dark... people die. But they throw very real feeling humor in. And by this movie most people are absolutely loving Barbosa. He is the most bad ass of the pirates. A truly good Captain. Sparrow is by far the most clever and lucky but Barbosa is just a awesome. Norrington is a very complex character but he goes out like a boss. Seeing the respect Jack and Hector have for each other is also cool. Kiera amd Orlando are way to pretty for this world. As for the wedding, ships captains have the authority to perform weddings. So asking Barbosa is very legit. And as each of them is also a Captain, they can do the lines to each other as well. Very fitting marriage for them. Their wedding dance being a sword fight back amd forth and around each other. And Barbosa throwing pirate slurs and curses in just makes it perfect. Of all 3 this is my favorite. It feels the most epic and has the biggest stakes. Nothing will ever capture the magic of the first though. The rest of them are fun... truly. Not this incredible but they are solid and fun watches. I wish Disney would take risks like this again. Dark, dirty, muddy movies about let's face it horrible people. Gore Verbinski is an insanely good director.

This is my favorite movie of the series. The song at the beginning, _Hoist the Colors,_ was written for the movie to tell the tale of Calypso, Jones, and the Court. Below is my analysis. *The Chorus:* _Yo ho, haul together_ _Hoist the colors high_ _Heave ho, thieves and beggars_ _Never shall we die_ The chorus is sung numerous times within the song. It's basically telling the pirates, full of thieves and beggers, to get ready to set sail. The lyrics here are obvious in meaning. *First verse:* _The King and his men_ _stole the Queen from her bed_ _and bound her in her bones_ The King was the Pirate King at that time, and while his identity is unknown, I believe him to be Jones himself. The King's men refers to the Brethren Court. The Queen is Calypso, her bed is the sea, and binding her in her bones refers to binding her to her human form. _the seas be ours and by the powers_ _where we will we'll roam_ The seas literally belong to the pirates due to having power over Calypso. *Second verse:* _Now some have died_ _and some are alive_ _and others sail on sea_ This is a reference to the chorus of the song, which mention the pirates as thieves and beggars. This part of the verse is obvious in meaning. _with the keys to the cage_ _and the Devil to pay_ The "keys" to the cage are the nine Pieces of Eight, which were used to bind Calypso. The Devil refers to Davy Jones himself since he's the one that told the Brethren Court how to bind her; he's also a devil of sorts, or what I like to call, an ocean-bound Hades. _we lay to Fiddler's Green._ Fiddler's Green is an after-life of paradise for sailors where a fiddle never stops playing, but in the POTC universe, it is a tavern located in Davy Jones' locker. It might have a fiddle playing inside to fit the narrative. *Third verse:* _The bell has been raised_ _From it's watery grave..._ _Do you hear it's sepulchral tone?_ _A call to all_ _Pay head the squall_ _And turn your sails to home!_ This entire verse may refer to the scene of POTC where the pirates sing their song, and the Brethren Court is summoned to join together. A "all pirates unite" type of moment.

I agree to all of it except for the part that Davy Jones was the pirat king. They said he was the one who told the brethren how to bind her. That doesn't make him part of it. And what makes it even more unlikely is that Calypso didn't know he was to blame for her binding until Will told her. If Davy Jones were part of the brethren at the time and they bound her, she would have blamed him all along. And he was already "dead" when the brethren did that. I doubt that he could have been part of them because he wasn't really part of the living world anymore. He is something between the worlds of life and death. I like your analysis of the lyrics. I think about that every time when I hear that song but was never able to make sense of every line. 😊
@meganlodon Жыл бұрын
@@leuchtkaferchen1639 I was thinking of Jones being the King, because they all had to agree to bind her, and the King is who made the final decision; I'm thinking of a similar situation to how Swan became King. So, it's still possible that they chose him as King in that moment, regardless if he was a member of the Court or not. It was the first Court, after all, so there weren't really any rules (the Code was written during the second Court). To add to this, if Calypso went centuries not knowing that Jones was to blame, it wouldn't surprise me that she didn't know he was the King for a time either. In any case, I wouldn't mind either way, if he was King or not. Him as King is just my fun, yet still probable, theory to add a little spice to the lore. Lol. I just wish we were given a name, though, rather than the First King.

And this is exactly what happened to her now. But this is not the only way the movie comes back here. When Norrington is killed he took a final stab at Jones who remarks what a nice sword he had and subsequently keeps it. This is the sword he later stabs Will with and after he becomes Captain of the Dutchman, Will sports this blade. Becoming captain of the Flying Dutchman doesn't curse you like it did Davy Jones in appearance. He turned because Calypso had betrayed their love, and one could imagine that she then cursed him in return for his actions, and that's why he's "tentacle-y". When Will was stabbed, Jack had to make a choice: stab the heart and make himself immortal (like he wanted for the entire film) or let Will stab it so he would live. In the end, Jack made the selfless choice, which I always believe is his true character inside: a good man. Edit: funny that people are correcting me in the comments. Perhaps I should have clarified that I only meant to comment to fill in where Alex seemed to be missing out on the lore and the explanation of said lore. Yes, Davy Jones is the ferryman of the sea and neglected his duties and thus convoluted his longstanding relationship with Calypso, but that can be pretty easily picked up by a lay watcher of the film. I just didn't bring that up in my original comment lol

You are wrong, he was cursed cause his duty is to ferry the souls of the dead to the afterlife, and his reward for doing this duty is being able to step on land for 1 day, every 10 years. Jones, after being betrayed, decided to betray his duty and no longer ferry the dead. THAT is what corrupted him. ^ It is THAT misconception, that makes the 5th movie so horrifically bad. They have Will turning like Jones, literally RETCONNING this movie, and making it seem like him being Captain of the Dutchmen was some kinda 'Curse' that could be broken. When in fact that would NOT work, and is NOT what is would happen. He isn't Cursed. He is employed by the Goddess of the Sea, Calypso, with a job to do, and a punishment if he refuses to do it. Even IF the turning squid like was seen as a Curse, Which is isn't, but for the Sake of Arguement let's say it was; Them breaking the "Curse", would only remove the Squid corruption, he would STILL be bound forever to the Dutchmen, and the SECOND he touched land before the 10 years were up, he would die right then and there on the spot. Most likely worse, ceasing to exist and not passing on with the dead. It's such a shame. The 4th movie had it's own flaws, but at least mostly kept itself without the world that the first 3 movies set up as canon. But the 5th movie just retcons literally everything about the lore and world building.

Two greatest come-arounds of PotC movies: 1 - Elisabeth being called "Turner" by Barbossa, since she called herself "Elisabeth Turner" when they first met And best of all, 2 - William being killed by the sword he himself made, his own masterpiece Sword made, bought by the governor, gifted to Norrington, lost when he lost his position, given back at end of movie 2 when he got his position back, used to stab Jones, who then gets the sword and uses to kill Will

I know many people don't like the movies after Will and Elizabeth weren't in them anymore but I still like them. They are different but still good. I enjoyed especially the last one. Very moving. And Barbossa could marry Will and Elizabeth because he is a captain. And like Jack explained in the last movie: captains can perform weddings. And it weren't all of them who stabbed the heart. It was only Will. He was the only one who held the broken sword. Jack only guided his hand because Will was unconscious. Elizabeth's hand wasn't even near the sword or the heart. But she lay half on top of Will so it looked like she was involved. And at least in this movie (or was it the last one?) they explained that Davy Jones only looks like a monster because he broke his oath. He stopped helping the dead into the afterlife and therefore was punished. That's why all of them looked normal again after Will became captain. And Calypso turned Davy Jones back for a moment when he visited her.

Oh the HEARTBREAK THE AGONY this movie caused 9 year old me. Absolutely devastated when will was stabbed. And a very bittersweet ending that yea he’s still alive but can only see Elizabeth once every ten years just tragic. I will quickly say that one of the main reasons (for me at least) that the next couple movies are just fine. Not horrible or fantastic. Is because the chemistry between jack, will, and Elizabeth is unmatched. This movie also has one of the most epic death scenes it is 👌🏻Beckett just accepting his defeat and casually walking down the stairs while his ship blows up around his is cinematic gold. (Also a quick note on the actor who plays Beckett, he is also in Pride and Prejudice (with Kira Knightly) and manages to make me equally uncomfortable) A captain of a ship was allowed to perform weddings due to how long they would be at sea and just the general status of a captain and usually being the one recording deaths and what not so the captain would also record the marriage of two people on his ship to keep them honest (ie attempting to marry another). They are also pirates and even if legally the church wouldn’t recognize it, they don’t really care because again pirates. So did they all stab the heart?? Technically yes and no. A ship can only have one captain. So regardless of Elizabeth and jack staging will, Will’s hand was the one holding the blade. Jack was holding his wrist and let gravity do its work. Which honestly is such a quick glimpse to what’s under the facade of Captain Jack. He was fully prepared to live forever until will got stabbed. Jack truly cares for both will and Elizabeth and in order to save will and give them somewhat of a life together, he had to be selfless and give up what he wanted. Also! I’m pretty sure the big explosion scene in Singapore at the beginning was done in one take because they straight up blew up the set. It was like okay wither we get this right or we get this right. There is no getting it wrong and I think it made that scene so much more gritty and authentic verses having done it by cgi. Even though the cgi in this movie was and still is fantastic. I can’t wait for you to get to LOTR and admire the beauty of Legolas with us all 😂

The one misconception about pirates (in general) is thinking the crew followed the captain out of fear, and loyalty. Pirate crew were autonomous, unlike sailors of any other royalty or company owned ship. They followed the captain as long as he made them rich, and they all got equal shares of any booty, not the captain got the lion's share, and the crew settled with what was left over. That little tidbit didn't make it into the Pirates franchise movies, but would have changed the point and purpose of the movies.

Hey man I just wanted to drop in to let you know they asked Barbosa to marry them because during that Era in history, any captain of a ship was deemed ordained to marry a couple. Seeing as their ship was an extension of their livelihood and ran by the captain. It gave every Captain the power to wed. After all, a ship was a community and small home on the high seas, yo-ho!

So, fun fact. A ship's captain, though not ordained, is recognized as having the authority to perform a wedding ceremony. Also, I love that the two English navy men who Jack encountered in the first movie are right there on the ship with Barbosa as pirates at the end of this movie. Honestly, I really enjoy this whole series, and I really hope that you keep going. Whatever else, you just get more and more Johnny Depp as Jack in movie after movie, and... that's well worth the time investment, in my opinion.

So Alex, Beckett killed the Kraken earlier in the film and instead of stabbing it himself, Jack used Will's hand to stab the heart to save his life, a situation he didn't account for. I think its cute the attraction Tia Dalma has for Will when u realize that Orlando & Naomie dated for a bit after this. Cause the scene where they first meet in the last film was amazing 😂 Also, it's worthy to note imo, that every guy Elizabeth has kissed has died & that includes her father 😂 literal kiss of death she has. Which is why Jack said "once was enough".

Don't know if anyone's mentioned it yet but there's a real fun theory out there about Elizabeth being cursed with a 'Kiss of Death' - every man she kisses or that kisses her dies - Jack, Norrington, Sao Feng, even Will. And then there's a thing I really love about the continuity of this trilogy, with the sword Will made in the first movie for Norrington's promotion, finding its way all the way into the third movie, where Davy Jones uses that same sword to stab Will through the heart. It found its way back to its maker in the roundabout way.

This film really made me empathize with Mr. Jones. Love is a cruel mistress, and often times makes no logical sense. His character arc is a cautionary lesson that the callous spectrum of love can even outweigh it's most beautiful enveloping counterparts. And also a huge parallel that synergizes with the Heisenberg uncertainty principle and the Observer effect. Which basically equates "anything you observe you end up changing it." In this case it's about love. We can't love something without changing it. Even if we knew all of the prerequisites, if we magically gained omnipotent knowledge and took steadfast action to stop changing something. The byproduct of us trying not to change the thing we love, changes it. It's a weird paradox that we destroy, change, consume, and edit anything and everything that we love. We can't not take pictures, take a keepsake, build a road to it, build a bridge across it, damn it up, marry it, take a piece of it home with you, touch it, feel it, taste it, smell it. It's a universal constant that we change whatever it is we love, be it for the better or worse, be it conscious or unconscious. Somehow we end up changing everything that we love, admire, respect, and long for. And if Calypso had been faithful and stayed true to her words and returned after 10 years to show Davey love again... she would have never of been her true self, as free and as chaotic as the Ocean. It's a brutally honest love story about trying to change some one when you should just love them for what/who they are. Poor Davey Jones, the shear poetry of a man who can't die carving out his own heart for fear of the woman who tortured it. Afraid to show his true emotions ever again. And now instead of ferrying souls to the under-verse he now keeps them for himself. Dark dark poetry.

33:48 It's *mostly* just a trope that ship captains are automatically ordained by... the sea I guess? This myth mostly came about because captains are basically the law on ships, and with that they had the power to create birth and death certificates and basically act as the notary for official documents like wills, and while they did have to note in their ships log when a marriage took place, they could not inherently do it unless they actually went and got ordained which is what some captains, especially cruise ship captains, do to get more people (wedding parties) to choose their ship. There are a few exceptions where captains are allowed to perform legally binding marriages (this does not mean ordained, just that the marriage is legal), notably Japanese captains as long as they are marrying two people who are also Japanese. Same with Romania except Romania extends that same privilege to aircraft captains. Bermuda allows captains to perform marriages regardless of nationality as long as the ship they are captaining is registered in Bermuda. This was a not so subtle way to get cruise lines to register their ships in Bermuda, and it totally worked.
