So glad to see that the guys at Pretendo are going great work to get us Wii U people back online. I'm really looking forward to when they can eventually get Xenoblade Chronicles X going. I finally started playing it a few months ago and am now missing the online side with the server shutdown. They did say in a tweet some time ago that they do want to get XCX into the service. So until then I'll glady bide my time and wait. And will probably try out the hackless DNS method and see how it works with some Mario Maker courses.

I tested it. Splatoon worked without issues on my unhacked Wii U. The game server was sufficiently populated, so the wait time for matching wasn't more than a few seconds.

The fact that Pretendo actually managed to find a way to do this without hacking your consoles is absolutely satisfying, Sure! A bunch of smart people can hack their consoles easily, but not everyone can do it leaving some casuals scared that they might accidentally destroy their consoles, However, with pretendo doing this, it's a whole lot easier for a bunch of people!

@@M64bros yeah as long as you follow the hacksdotguide guide properly it mostly boils down to: move some files to an sd card, plug the sd card in the wii u, do the exploit to load the payload file that you put on there, navigating the homebrew, repeat the previous steps a couple more times, your done the people that are scared of breaking their wii u's are just worried over nothing, the guide is literally meant for those exact types of people, that's why there's a guide in the first place

If you can do this, I honestly don't think you can mess up hacking the Wii U either. I was pretty scared of doing it and only got to it when the eshop was announced to be closing down, and it took a while but only because of loading screens and file transfers. I don't actually see hacking it as "giving it unlimited potential", but there's some neat stuff you can do with that. You can copy your disks onto a hard drive, play gamecube games, install mods, use other controllers, and of course piracy becomes possible.

I... honestly don't understand this mindset. The final, tiniest bit of support left is the ability to re-download any of your purchased games. Hell, I'm not even sure you can get your Wii U repaired if your disc drive dies. I see no reason _not_ to softmod your Wii U at this point. I've done it, and once it's done, it can be extremely unobtrusive, and even leave your system looking and feeling stock, just with more features than it originally came with. In April of 2024, it's basically just an unofficial system update.

I am on Pretendo ever since Nintendo had their downtime for Splatoon and Mario Kart 8 because of that one bug back then. Came back now tho and I love that matchmaking in Splatoon now works. Also tested Mario Kart 7 and 8 which is fun! Just as if nothing ever happened. Also I can play on Cemu, which is nice.

This is great stuff. So, the limitations you speak of at the top of the video, are these temporary or are they simply the nature of going this alternate DNS route? If it's the latter I'd rather hack to be able to access miiverse and the other missing features you mention.

It is the nature of the DNS method. "Main" Wii U SSL libraries (most games, etc) use one version that is exploitable, but the Miiverse app, etc. use another one that isn't. It may be able to be exploited in the future, but I would certainly not count on it. Plus if you properly hack your Wii U, you can move all your save data from your NNID account on the Wii U to the Pretendo account and not have to start all over in games.

There really is no point to this method if you can hack the Wii U, it is just there for people who really don't want to hack it for whatever reason. After all, these online servers work best when you can get as many people as possible to join.

I heard about SSSL, but I was uncussessful. I did see something on Pretendo’s website that it might be my ISP, but I’ll try it again when I have more than a few minutes. Otherwise I’ll buy a second Wii U and just soft mod it since my wife refuses to mod our current Wii U. Besides I would rather do this mod so that I won’t screw it up if she changes her mind (spoiler: she won’t haha)

Let's hope something like this could happen with the 3DS. I saw a playthrough of Black 2 White 2 a while back that showcased getting event Pokemon at random with specific DNS settings or whatever it's called, so I'm hoping that can happen with the Gen 6 & 7 Pokemon games, too.

Yeah, back in Pokemon Gens 4 and 5 it was apparently easier to mimic their servers, so all you had to do was manually configure an alternative DNS and nobody was the wiser. I remember using it in White 1 to grab copies of event Pokemon (Celebi and shiny Beast Trio) to activate their in-game events for Zorua/ark.

Pretendo is awesome. Keep in mind however, that game support is still in beta, despite how much it has been talked about recently. New users will be disappointed that their favourite games might not be supported yet, but they have to be patient, since the eventual goal is full support for what was previously supported by Nintendo Network. Don't worry fam. Pokemon will be supported. Just give it time.

It’s been known to cause some problems if you use the same email, so I’d recommend creating a new one if you haven’t already got an extra. As for your second question I believe that since you are creating a new user profile, your old data will not be affected since (at least in splatoon’s case) it is tied to the user and NOT the console! I tried using Pretendo, but it's not working well for me on the 3DS or Wii U. I tried to create an account directly on the website, but when I tried to use the account on the console it said that it was already linked to another console, so I tried to create an account directly on the Wii U and it worked, but Miiverse keeps loading forever and never loads, Mario Kart 8 keeps giving me a direct error (I only managed to have one match, all the others I had an error or disconnect problems), I then used this account on the 3DS, Miiverse worked even though it was very slow, but I couldn't play any online games at all. I don't know if it's because I'm from Brazil, which is a bit far from the servers, or if the servers are congested due to the end of the Nintendo Network, but I'm really upset about not being able to use it, I was really excited to be able to play again Splatoon.

logging out requires connecting to nintendo's servers so that specific server might be dead now, so you need to make a new profile, the pretendo id can be the same as the nintendo one but the wii u might not let you make 2 profiles with the same name

I was confused when they announced the SSSL method, I mean like why don't people just install aroma? your just limiting the capabilities of your wii u because without aroma you can't install archived eshop stuff unless you already owned everything you actually wanted to get off of the eshop, and the brick risk is pretty low if you actually follow the guide properly, so unless you literally can't afford an sd card there's no reason to not install aroma, in which case SSSL becomes relevant, heck the SSSL method doesn't work with the full suite of pretendo services

Gonna keep it a buck fifty, I don't expect the servers to be alive for long. Maybe some Splatoon matches will be running, but almost every other game is going to have practically no reason to be online, nobody will be playing them. Most Wii U games were dead before the shutdown, fan servers will be even more dead.
