@@wms1650 Churchill was pro-Zionist, due to his Jewish blood on his mother's side. Hence Leonard as one of his names, after his paternal grandfather L.Jeromme. After the war he ensured that the Jews got their homeland! Hey presto.. Israel, taken off the Palastinians under the infamous Balfour declaration again all crafted by British Jewish politicians in the early part of the 20th century. I hope that helps.

Incredible parents?? His parents are rarely discussed for obvious reasons, particularly his mother who was Jewish American but Sshh. My grandma remembered the Germans dropping leaflets informing them of the Jewish nature of Churchill, and the British states pro Jewish stance. Being politically niave she simply disposed of the leaflet believing it to be enemy 'lies'. Imagine her surprise when many after the war she finally learnt the truth.

@@dukethotness Of course. As for the Bengalis, Churchill was correct that their overpopulation was instrumental in the famine. They did "breed like rabbits." The Malthusian safety valves of war, famine and pestilence are still the best realpolitik way to deal with Third World overpopulation. That's why what he has said is remembered... We live in world where truth is not often spoken and when it is it's an annoyance and an irritation to those who are getting away with lies. Churchill’s love of the English language stemmed in part from the fact that he repeatedly failed Greek and Latin while at Harrow. His abhorrence for the rigours of the classical languages confirmed in him the desire to become a serious student of his own. As one Victorian wit put it, “no, it is not necessary for a gentleman to know Latin; but he at least ought to have the benefit of having forgotten it”...

A few years after the victory of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro was at the opening of a new bookshop in Havana, and made a short speech. There was a short question period after Fidel spoke, and a young militant asked why the bookshop stocked Spanish translations of Winston Churchill, since Churchill was an imperialist. Fidel answered with one sentence: "If it wasn't for Winston Churchill, you wouldn't be here." Enough said.

@@akashduggal1634 He was born in 1874 during a time of large scale colonialism and imperialism. Became head of the largest empire the world had ever seen and had to deal with the facist tyranny of Nazi Germany that threatened the survival of the free world. To top it off he also suffered from depression, yet he still found the endeavour and courage to lead The United Kingdom to victory over Hitler. He was a complex character and a man of his time and who changed throughout his life. He did indeed prevent food imports to Bengal to stockpile it in the Balkans. But you seem to forget, he was Leading The United Kingdom in a War. The soldiers needed supplies more than anyone else. There are letters written by him to leaders of other allied nations showing his serious concern of the situation that arose in Bengal. The Bengal famine was indeed a catastrophic mistake on Churchill's part. But we in Great Britain are grateful for Winston Churchill because he was an inspirational war hero who helped to save this nation and many others from Nazi Germany and the other Axis powers. Before you make sweeping remarks about Sir Winston Churchill, let me ask you this - Would you rather have Hitler have won?

Churchill was the right man for that, meaning war. He was the kind of leder you wan't when hope and course is important. However, he simply was not a particularly great statesman, and without WW2 he would probably just be a footnote in the history of great politicians. I don't say this to bring him down, I say this because it's true. When we over glorify our heroes, we destroy them, because it's not really them anymore, but the a fantasy about them.

True - both points in your first paragraph. But his part in winning the war helped to postpone for a couple of generations the 'politically correct' invasion of Britain (and much of Europe) which, starting with France, is removing one freedom after another. And if we are not more watchful and careful this rot will cross the Atlantic.

Mahatma replied to W.C. saying, "Yes I am a half naked fakir but W.C. should know it is very difficult to be one' World may remember him for anything, we Indians will never forget this Man

Churchill did not have autocratic power over Indian affairs. He had to get agreement of the war cabinet for any decisions. He had set up a committee to report to the War Cabinet on Indian Affairs in 1942, which consisted of people with personal experience of India , including a former Governor of Bengal. There was a Viceroy with responsibility for the governance of India and a Governor of Bengal with responsibility for the governance of Bengal. In other words he was 5 tiers removed from civilian actions taken in India. Supply references for the alleged statements and what it was that he personally did that overrode the other 4 tiers of governance. Oh, by the way, you might care to research Ghandi's statements about black Africans when he was in South Africa. They contrast rather sharply with Churchill's written praise, both of the contribution of Indian Regiments and of the civilian population during the threat of Japanese invasion. This can be found in his account of the war.
