Churchill’s love of the English language stemmed in part from the fact that he repeatedly failed Greek and Latin while at Harrow. @@akashduggal1634 He was born in 1874 during a time of large scale colonialism and imperialism. Became head of the largest empire the world had ever seen and had to deal with the facist tyranny of Nazi Germany that threatened the survival of the free world. To top it off he also suffered from depression, yet he still found the endeavour and courage to lead The United Kingdom to victory over Hitler. He was a complex character and a man of his time and who changed throughout his life. He did indeed prevent food imports to Bengal to stockpile it in the Balkans. But you seem to forget, he was Leading The United Kingdom in a War. The soldiers needed supplies more than anyone else. There are letters written by him to leaders of other allied nations showing his serious concern of the situation that arose in Bengal. Churchill was the right man for that, meaning war. He was the kind of leder you wan't when hope and course is important. However, he simply was not a particularly great statesman, and without WW2 he would probably just be a footnote in the history of great politicians. I don't say this to bring him down, I say this because it's true. When we over glorify our heroes, we destroy them, because it's not really them anymore, but the a fantasy about them.

Salty Admiral Churchill would of been the right man pre-war too since he was anti appeasement. But of course the people weren’t ready to believe in a hard stance against nazisim yet.

True - both points in your first paragraph. But his part in winning the war helped to postpone for a couple of generations the 'politically correct' invasion of Britain (and much of Europe) which, starting with France, is removing one freedom after another. And if we are not more watchful and careful this rot will cross the Atlantic.

In those life changing quotes one life time offensive quote was also there. It offended minds of every British Indian citizen. Those words were uttered with intention to tarnish image of Nationalist leader, Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi. W.C. addressed Mahatma Gandhi as "a Half Naked Fakir",when he was in London attending RT conference. Mahatma replied to W.C. saying, "Yes I am a half naked fakir but W.C. should know it is very difficult to be one' World may remember him for anything, we Indians will never forget this Man

Just look at the young men and women who have fought and died in the war against terror. There's your answer. Winnie would recognise them in a heart beat, as the great grand children of the men and women he led. I've no doubt about it.

Churchill did not have autocratic power over Indian affairs. He had to get agreement of the war cabinet for any decisions. He had set up a committee to report to the War Cabinet on Indian Affairs in 1942, which consisted of people with personal experience of India , including a former Governor of Bengal. There was a Viceroy with responsibility for the governance of India and a Governor of Bengal with responsibility for the governance of Bengal. In other words he was 5 tiers removed from civilian actions taken in India. Supply references for the alleged statements and what it was that he personally did that overrode the other 4 tiers of governance. Oh, by the way, you might care to research Ghandi's statements about black Africans when he was in South Africa. They contrast rather sharply with Churchill's written praise, both of the contribution of Indian Regiments and of the civilian population during the threat of Japanese invasion. This can be found in his account of the war.
