I "love" the old Avalon Hill board games, even Kriegspiel! I love the smell when you open the box's and the old paper stat sheets and counters! Love your channel too! Keep them coming!

This title was the first wargame I ever bought. I spotted it in a local toy store at the mall when I was about 13 or 14 in the mid-1970’s. I had recently developed an interest in the Civil War so I bought it. I played it solitaire many times of the next couple of years before moving on to other Avalon Hill titles. I never really wanted to go back to this game as it was too simple and the square grid was sorta lame in retrospect, but I do have a great sense of nostalgia towards this game since it was my initial introduction to board war gaming as a hobby. 😊

I played this game tons of time, way back in the 60s. Then I bought 1977 version, man was that a bomb. I did score the rare 1963 hex version, I 'll haven't played it yet. GREAT VIDEO you have there.

What is the difference inbetween the '64 edition and the '77 edition?
@autocad32274 жыл бұрын
@@davidwormell6609 the 77 edition is a complete redesign. Avalon Hills feedback, from this game was a lowest ever. So I have never liked it. The 58, and 64 additions up 76 are very similar. (With the exception of a two-year hex version around 1963). The 1977 version did have a beautiful map. Designer did a lot of historical research, but the game was not well received.

Yes, I had owned the old hex grid version of the game myself at one time. Eventually I had to abandon it. Mainly because it was too slow. If you break it out I recommend that you double or triple the movement on all roads. The counters, which are rated '2' for movement are just too slow. Thanks for the comments.

Very nostalgic game for me. As a kid, I played it quite a bit, but when I went back to it as a young adult, I marveled at how bad the flaws were. The fact that the HQ counters had no function in the game was amazing to me, especially since it would have been easy to improve a unit's strength if it was adjacent to a HQ counter; but the designers couldn't be bothered to make that easy addition. Plus, after seeing games with hex grids and their obvious superiority to squares drawn on the map, I couldn't believe adults had designed this game. Well, I guess the hobby had to start SOMEWHERE.
@XLEGION1 Жыл бұрын
Well, that's exactly it isn't it? In 1958, when this game was 'invented', who was doing historical board games? Nobody. This was done by one single man - Charles Roberts and his name isn't anywhere in the credits. I have the same reaction today as you did. It's just not a great simulation but I see it as a pioneer game in the field. It all started with Roberts.
@davidfinch7407 Жыл бұрын
Something that occurred to me was that long before Roberts, people were playing historical wargames. H.G. Wells famously published war game rules in his book "Little Wars". Perhaps Roberts was the first one to substitute cardboard counters for miniature armies, making the games much more affordable. @@XLEGION1

The square grid and the lack of terrain effects on movement in the game. Those are two huge issues.

I believe I talked my dad into buying me that version from the gift shop in Gettysburg, way back when-- in the early 70s I thought. First saw hexagon grid with original Battle of the Bulge.

My dad had this game. I don't know what version from the 60's it was. I found it in the basement on a shelf in the mid 70's. It got me hooked onto reading about the civil war. Unfortunatley I lost the pieces. MY BAD!! Sorry POP!!

Call me sentimental but I prefer the 1958 counters. Those HUGE infantry divisions with their over-sized frontages. Awesome. This mapboard is in great shape. And I enjoyed the video very much. BTW...I made so many personal modifications to that standard CRT! Tweeks you could never get away with now with a PC or X-Box game. Cheers!

I will always remember this game with fond affection as it was my first serious "Civil War" game and it left a powerful impression. It has been made rather obsolete with some of the newer titles but it played an important part in our hobby.
@Uhlan_7 жыл бұрын
My first exposure to this game was what's known as the revised 61 edition. It had counters like the 64 edition, and a hex map. By the time I played this game, I had already been exposed to later games and being physically "into the Civil War." found it, well, dull. I gave the game away at some point. I currently own an actual '58 edition that I found in a thrift shop for $1 and was surprised at it's complexity relative to the later versions.
@JamesWilliams-hw8we9 жыл бұрын
A Corps takes too long to move on a PC, but it's a snap on the '64 Gettysburg board game. Ambiguities and non-historical functions in the game (if noticed) are part of its "educational" effect (in reading comprehension and history). Ironical, ain't it? The '58 Edition has a much less severe CRT. In the '61 hex version artillery protects the infantry! ...and HQs have a use. Gettysburg '88, 125th Ann.Version is a simple but colorful improvement.

If the two Union cavalry units both attacked with enfilade against the Confederate infantry division, on turn one, and the Union player rolled 'elim' or 'back two', the Union could win on the first turn.

rowleys division should come on the fairfield rd not emmitsburg rd..other than that pretty good..
@XLEGION17 жыл бұрын
Actually it is far more complicated than that. Rowley DID come up from Emmittsburg but got side tracked to the west. He travelled for awhile on the 'Nunnemaker Hill Road' and eventually DID come in on the Fairfield road. So you are correct. However, any Gettysburg game that has him come in on the Emmittsburg Road is equally accurate in a sense since he did get side tracked. But, if you want 100% accuracy, Fairfield is more correct.
