I totally agree that this would work really well however, it is not all children in all schools that will just turn to their friends and discuss what the teacher has been talking about. It takes years of coordinated effort amongst teachers to encourage, motivate, and give children sufficient confidence to be able to discuss academic content with their friends. That is not to mention the need to build children's attention and focus on a topic for long enough to be able to absorb sufficient content to be able to make discussion on that topic. I totally believe it is doable, even in the foreign language classrooms however, to be successful, the teaching philosophy needs to follow through from kindergarten years on into elementary years and then continue to secondary school.
